Someone sent this address to me. Thought it might be some use to all of you out there. http://wwwhighsone books.com/ They have copies of the Adams Co. books for sale and many others including surname genealogies. Steven, I doubt it. I have tried that at the county level, in Indiana, and been shot down. They don't want to take a lot of time searching so you, generally, have to be accurate to within a month or so. Hi-- Will IN's State Dept. of Health search for a death certificate/record within a 20-year time span, and if so, do one of you out there know how much it will cost me for the search? If they won't do such a search, will they let someone come in and look for the information? And might there be someone reading this who'd be willing to do this, gratis or for a fee? Thank you for any useful help! -- Steven J. Whitright Melbourne, Florida mailto:stevnwil@scci.net
Hi all, I have a new Runyon family website. It is located at: http://www.norman.runyon.com It has the ancestry of John Runyon, III who settled in Hartford Township in Oct 1841, as well as his children & known grandchildren. More will be added as time permits. It is a rather plain site, right now, but I will jazz it up later. Hope some of you find it useful. Norman Runyon
Another source of death records, if you have a date, and need proofs are the furneal homes. Lynn ----- Original Message ----- From: <INADAMS-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <INADAMS-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 13, 1999 4:21 PM Subject: INADAMS-D Digest V99 #34
Well, seems to me like you almost answered part of your own question. There is no place to "write" for the death record that never existed. But, there, indeed, are other avenues for you. There are newspapers. There are graveyards and records of graveyards. There are mortuary records. There are wills and estate administrations. There are county histories. In short, there are several possibilities to establish death dates before the keeping of official records. Once you get back beyond the 1870s you will need to be enterprising because such things as death records just do not exist. I hope this helps a bit. Research Question Hi Rooters, I'm one of these unhappy people who just seems unable to make any progress on my research.....or at least not enough to notice. So here's a question. How does one go about finding a death record when the death probably occurred before the state required all deaths to be recorded? And, in the unlikely event the death actually was recorded, how does one find out about it when one does not know when that death occurred. I mean, I can't write to the.....what is it?.......Health Department?......and ask them to research all of their records between 1891 and 1908. Any hints on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my inquiry about finding death records. You all sent some very good hints. Julie
Richard, That is something that I could use but where do I find them? Norman Runyon Richard Scheimann wrote: > Another avenue are church records of burials. Another avenue are church records of burials. Church registers often go back to the 1850's in Adams County, and may list the cause of death as well as some information about survivors. Richard Scheimann

As with most of these county histories, there was no single author and no named author. Much of the material was submitted. Hi Steven, No. Divorces would normally have been filed in the county where the parties were living at the time of the divorce - or in a county close by. Margie Here are some of your answers: Eleanor Roop's (m. Henry Lawrence Bieberich) parents were Harley Jay Roop and Goldie A.J. Butcher m. Jan 2 1917. Her paternal grandparents were Frank and Anna(Barth) Roop m. Feb 19 1882. Harley had a brother Charley John Roop. Other children of Harley and Goldie were Harley Jr (m. Norma R. Smith 1940), Pauline, and Lawrence. Frank Roop came to Decatur IN from Dixon OH. Harley's wife Goldie died early and he remarried Nettie Smith and had 3 children: Sarah, Lawrence and Orville. I didn't see a Nettie Hart listed anywhere. Sorry - no other dates given. This is from the 1979 History of Adams County IN Valerie
Hello Fellow 'Rooters! I'm searching for an Indiana divorce record for someone that falls somewhere between 1874 and 1880. Does anyone know if a divorce back then had to be filed in the same county where the marriage took place? -- Steven J. Whitright Melbourne, Florida mailto:stevnwil@scci.net
I recently received some information from the 1998 Adams Co, IN Death Index and wondered if anyone recognized the names and could tell me who their parents were. I'm pretty sure they are all kin to the Roop family that lived in Van Wert Co, OH and/or Adams Co, IN, but I would like to find the connection. Hi All, I am going to Decatur next weekend to do some research (only have 2 days). Was wondering what type of records they have in the Sheriff's basement? And, would the sheriff's dept. be the place to go to find arrest records, etc. on someone who was always being arrested? Yes, yes, he was described as the baddest man in town (Decatur Democrat) and he belongs to me<G>... Thanks, Leslie

Just a note to let you Adams County residents of the efforts of one of your local residents. I was born and raised in Adams Co. Most of my family branches are from that area. I moved away some time ago and it is hard to do any local research at the libraries and courthouses. A local lady, Gloria Schindler, has been making copies, collecting data for me and has refused any compensation, even for postage. She does this, evidently, out of the goodness of her heart. Gloria, I don't know if you are a member of this list......but you are a real "angel" and have restored my faith in humanity......thanks... john peterson, ozona, florida
