Hello, I'm new to the list. I am looking for information regarding John GRIM who in 1840 was of Adams Co./ Washington Twp. His age was listed as 40-50. In 1840 there was a land transaction with the Blm - General Lands Office for a title to 160 acres in John Grim's name. Is this the same person that lived in Coshocton Co. OHio from at least 1824-1830? Need to know names of wife and children. Cathy clauer@oregonvos.net
Karen, All those Jonathan Kelly's ARE a problem, & I don't have it all sorted out either. In fact I have SEVEN in my database, & those are just the ones that I know!! But I do know a few tid bits that might help . All the name you mentioned are familiar & most are related in some shape or fashion to my Kellys. I have a family group picture of my Jonathan David Kelly, his 2nd wife Elizabeth Ruth Tharp & their children. My great-grandmother was the youngest child. Do you want a copy of this picture? Actually what I have is a laser copy of the original which my Grandmother has. It's a very good copy though. Let's go through the Jonathans.... My line is through the Jonathan Kelly who was born c1797 in PA, married Aug 29, 1816 in Harrison Co., OH to Sarah Kerrigan. Source:FTM CD#400, OH Marriage Index c1996. This CD is a compilation of OH marriage records from the courthouses, I don't have the actual copy. Jonathan's age is based on several census records . His death date is a mystery, I have Aug 21, 1870. w/ this as my source: Biographical & Historical Record of Jay & Blackford Cos.,IN c1887 states 9/1861, however Jonathan is listed as age 75 living w/ Justus in 1870 census. Justus was his son, my line again. I believe the Jonathan who died 1861 was an infant, also named Jonathan but a grandson . This is how Jonathan is listed in the 1850 & 1860 census: Jonathan Kelly age 53 farmer b. Pa., Sarah Kelly age 53, b.Pa. Daniel 23 m, laborer, b.Ohio Washington 21 m. b. Oh Charles 19 m. b.Oh William 16 m.,b.Oh Thomas 12 m. b.Oh The oldest 4 children that we know of had already married by 1850 1860 Census of Adams Co.,In. shows Jonathan Kelly age 63 b. Pa., occ. farmer, land value $13,000. Elizabeth Kelly age 68, b. Pa., Ellen Kelly age 44, b. Oh., Susannah Cole age 7, b. Pa. This appears to be the same Jonathan. We know Sarah died 1855, he might have remarried to this Elizabeth. I have no idea who Ellen & Susannah Cole are. As far as I know none of Jonathan's daughters in law were named Ellen & I don't know the Coles. Elizabeth also could be Jonathan's sister. According to a will of Daniel Kelly in Harrison Co., OH Jonathan appears to have been the youngest male (he's named last) in the following family: 1 Daniel Kelly b: Bef. 1775 PA d: 1831 Union Twp, Ohio .. +unknown d: Aft. Aug 1, 1831 OH . 2 Anne Kelly . 2 Charlotte Kelly . 2 Elizabeth Kelly . 2 David Kelly . 2 Mary Kelly . 2 William Kelly b: Bet. 1785 - 1794 . 2 Jonathan Kelly b: 1797 Pa. d: Aug 21, 1870 Blue Creek Twp., Adams Co., IN ..... +Sarah Kerrigan b: 1797 Pa. m: Aug 29, 1816 Jefferson Co.,OH d: Sep 5, 1855 Adams Co.,IN . 2 Isaac Kelly b: Bef. 1799 d: Aft. 1830 Daniel Kelly, Union twp., ___ County, date of will 4/28/1830;date of probate 8/1/1831; wife, name not given: children, William, Isaac, David, Jonathan, Anne, Charlotte, Mary, Elizabeth; execs., William Champer, Jacob Hing: wits., William Champer, John S. McClean. I have a feeling the Champer/Chambers go back a long way w/ this Kelly family. >From the Will Abstracts of Brooke County, West Virginia (across the river from Harrison Co., OH & where Daniel had lived) CHAMBERS, John NAMES: WIFE: Mary Chambers SONS: David Chambers, James Chambers, John Chambers (dec'd), William Chambers. DAUGHTERS: Sally Kelly (dec'd), Hulda Atkinson. GRANDSONS: William Kelly, George, son of John Chambers, James, son of John Chambers. EXECUTORS: Sons: David and James Chambers WITNESSES: Jesse Edgington, Nancy Briceland, James Ramsey DATED: Oct. 2, 1832 Recorded: Feb. term 1838 ******* Now back to Jonathan's siblings: Anne was possibly the Anne who married John Young 1823 in Harrison Co., OH. There are 2 Charlotte Kelly marriages: to William Courtright 1840 & Isaac Russel 1823. I don't know if either is this Charlotte, but the Courtrights are another related line. There are too many Elizabeth Kellys in the area to ever sort them! I've never found David in any census records. Nothing on Mary. William was on the 1820 Harrison Co., OH census as age 26-45. that's the last I've tracked him. Isaac is another story. He's probably the Isaac who married Mary Kerrigan in 1818. She probably a sister to Jonathan's wife. (Many ways to spell this name, Kernaghan, etc.) Isaac bought land in Carroll Co 1830. I don't know if he moved to IN in 1849 w/ Jonathan or not. I didn't find him on the 1850 census. He most likely had a son named Jonathan, so this might account for a few stray men by the name! What I have for the the first few generations. Most of this came from census, marriage, birth, death records. Norman, Last Dec. you sent me an e-mail re: Champer & Runyon. I'm going through all my old mail & I can't see where I responded. I know you had been interested in the Kelly's as well. Good Morning! If you have an Indiana based web site and would like to increase traffic to your web site, consider joining the Indiana Ancestry Web Ring. You must have a web site to join. For further information, or to visit the sites already in the ring, go here: http://www.geocities.com/~prairiecreek/indiana.html A web ring is a group of web sites with a common interest - in this case, Indiana genealogy and history. These web sites are "joined" together through the web ring, which allows a "tour" of the ring sites by clicking on the ring logo available on each member's page. You can tour the ring without having a web site. Hope to see you there! Plain TexThe facility is still there, only now it's a private nursing home. They have the original death records, although I don't know the complete date range. I visited there a couple of years ago looking for a death record for my g-g-grandfather's second wife, who died there in 1910. The record was in an old book, similar to those at the Adams Co. Health Dept. I also don't know if their records would reflect non-residents. My grandfather, Allen Moore, died in Adams County on 04 June, 1915. The Decatur newspaper that day published an article about his death. The article indicates that (as my father told me) Allen was found on the banks of the Wabash River, having gone fishing, suffered a heart attack, and lay there in the rain for several days. He was taken to the "Infirmary" where he died that same day, and is buried in the Adams County Farm Cemetery. As I understand it, the infirmary was part of the Adams County Farm......a sort of old folks home for people who had nowhere else to live. Studying the article, it would appear to me that Allen Moore was not a resident of the county farm since it seems they didn't know who he was. However, if he was a resident, the old records from that establishment, if they still exist, might yield up some good information about the family........people I've never been able to trace. So, does anyone know where those records would be stored? Thanks. Julie
Plain TexIn regard to obituaries, you cannot post verbatim transcripts of obits that fall under copyright protection, unless you can provide express, written permission to do so from the copyright holder. In general, anything published on or after January 1, 1923 should be considered to have copyright protection. Anything prior to that date is OK. If you have an obituary that is copyrighted, you can still abstract the factual information for posting to the board...facts cannot be copyrighted, but their presentation (in the form of an obit) can. Thus, you can extract the individuals name, birth date and place, death date and place, family members and relationships etc. and send that information. Deeds and wills etc. are public documents and are not protected. Cemetery records are public information. However it would be appropriate to get permission from compilers of cemetery information (such as the DAR records) before providing them to the web site. Again, the facts (cemetery location, dates, etc.) cannot be copyrighted, but the presentation, in the form of a book of cemetery readings, can be. When unsure, always ask permission. Tim - Could you provide some guidelines on what is considered copyrighted and what is not? Age of the document? DAR cemetery records, (yes!)? Do newspapers have copyright on obits, etc, etc? THX. Pat Lenhart
Hi Everyone, Pat Lenhart just posted some info on the Adams Co. Biographies board. Check it out. How about some more of you...surely you have some information you could post to the biographies, obits (be careful of copyright material), deeds, wills, etc. boards.
