The Surnames I research in Adams Co are: BURKHART, CROSS, McDANIEL (aka) McDONALD, BOLENBAUGH, FAST, HOOK, HOPPLE, STEWART (aka) STUART. Most of these ancestors originally settled in Blue Creek Twp with some eminating from the Willshire and Wren, Ohio area. Other lines include Baer/Bair, Baumgardner, Fleagle, Snyder, Myers, Fitzsimmons, Steen, Holman, Miller and Conner (aka) O'Conner. From my husband's side the Adams Co. LENHARTS and BURRELLS were connected through the original LENHART immigrant (arriving 1748 in PA). Pat Lenhart

I am looking for any information on these Adams families: ANDREWS, ARCHBOLD, BALL, BRIGHT, MALLONEE, REYNOLDS. Thanks for your help. Trey Higgens
Hi! Here's the surnames from my tree: SCHIEFERSTEIN, BRAUN, GRANDSTAFF, DUTCHER, WRIGHT, DUDDLESON, DeBOLT, BALL, ANDREWS, WHITE, POUNDSTONE, BOUBARN, DIENER, KERN, RAINS, PIERCE, SMITH (what fun!), NORTON, KING, BLAIR, BURGESS, RUNYON, KIZER - to mention just a few. Two things I hope to accomplish in the not-too-distant future are to find the ancestors of my GG-Grandmothers, Matilda WRIGHT (wife of Noah GRANDSTAFF), and Elizabeth WHITE (wife of Moses T. BALL). The most exciting thing to happen to me this year was becoming a full-fledged member of Piqua Sept of the Shawnee Nation. While participating in an on-line discussion about one of my family lines, I read a post from a relative in Bluffton wherein he mentioned being a member of the Piqua Shawnee. After contacting him for information, I learned that he had become a member based on the same lineage as mine - so he petitioned the Council for my membership and on March 6, 1999 I was accepted into full membership. Also, thanks to many posts on Rootsweb, I was contacted by someone in Colorado who had found a long-lost great-great uncle (half-brother of my G-Grandfather). While not a direct-line ancestor, nevertheless I was thrilled to finally find Lorenzo DeBolt. Thanks, Rootsweb! I am currently researching the Monmouth Cemetery in an attempt to compile a notebook for the libraries in Adams Co. I'm reading the old newspapers, searching for names of people buried at Monmouth who's tombstones are missing. Where possible I'm compiling a short genealogy of the "inhabitants" of this graveyard. You can read the list of known burials in the Monmouth Cemetery on the Adams Co. Rootsweb page - anyone with further information on any of these people is invited to contact me. I'm not doing this work for profit and do not have any intention of selling this information - this is just something I enjoy doing, and if through my hobby I'm able to help someone else with their research, that's all the payment I want. I currently have information on the following families who have people buried at Monmouth: HOOPER, VAN BUSKIRK, HARKLESS, MURRAY, DUTCHER, ABER and BURR. Yesterday, Dec. 29, 1999, a burial was made at the Monmouth Cemetery - the first in 50 years. Jimmie Glen Harkless was laid to rest at Monmouth, beside his numerous ancestors buried there. The last burial previous to Jimmie's was that of Sadie KRICK, buried there in 1949. I'm still willing to do local research and look-up - so feel free to contact me. Will also do more extensive research for a small fee. Nola Rains
I am researching these surnames in Adams Co. BROWN and WARNER. Some allied families are Gessinger, Lenhart (Linhart, etc.), Stevens, Breiner, Baxter, Mumma, Roberts, Fear, Singleton, etc. I published a book called The Brown / Warner Letters, 1852 - 1884 which involves letters written from Adams County mentioning the above. I sent a copy of this book to the Decatur Library in July, 1999 but have never heard whether they received it. If anyone is going to the Library soon, I would appreciate it if you could look for it and let me know if it is there. Thank you in advance. Hi, My surnames are BEEMAN and NEPTUNE. The best thing that happened to me this year, I finally got to Adams county, Decature Library, to do research. Then to the cemeteries to get pictures of the tombstones for my ancestors. Linda Ead
My Great-Grandfather was John ROBISON, b. 1 Sep 1835 in Perry Co. PA. He moved with his parents at age two to Crawford Co. Ohio, where, on 31 Mar 1857 he married Sarah KERR. Sarah was born 31 Aug 1835 in Perry Co. PA. They moved to Section 26 of Monroe Twp., Adams Co. (NE of Berne) in 1865. Great-Grandma Sarah KERR ROBISON died on 24 Oct 1888, and is buried in the Backesto cemetery. John Robison sold his farm shortly thereafter and moved around some until ca 1898, when he and his third wife bought a ramshackle home in Vera Cruz, Wells Co. He died there on 24 Apr 1924, and is buried next to his first wife in the Backesto Cemetery. Sarah KERR's brother David Marion KERR, married John ROBISON's sister Nancy. David and Nancy are also buried at the Backesto cemetery. (I am related in some way to every ROBISON, KERR, and GATES buried at Backesto.) My Grandfather Orrin M. ROBISON was born in Monroe Twp. Adams Co. on 17 Jun 1872. On 29 Oct 1899, he married Daisy Mae TEETER, who was born on her fathers farm in section 6 of Jefferson Twp. Adams Co. on 28 May 1881. (Her father was John Fremont TEETER. Her grandfather was Daniel Paul TEETER, who moved to Adams co. from Darke Co. Ohio in 1870, and at one time owned nearly 300 acres in Wabash and Monroe Townships.) Almost all of my Teeter kin are buried in the Crawford Cemetery east of Berne. A few are buried in the MRE cemetery west of Berne. Many more details are available on these folks and other kin. I'd like to find an obit of Sarah KERR ROBISON. I haven't checked yet with the Berne newspapers. Might the Berne or Decatur libraries have newspapers this old? Tom Robison Ossian IN

Hi there! My Adams County surnames are: Miller, Tonnellier, Gase, Franz, Fuelling, Noonan, Gadbois, Rolape, Kurber, Omlor, Kohne, Eiting, Terveer, Teeple. My big excitement for this year was finding out the maiden name of my husband's great-grandmother. Born Mary Susanah Tonnellier in 1851, she married Andrew Miller and lived in Decatur for most of her life. Happy New Year, --Rachelle Miller
Hi Everyone, We've had some people come and go to this list over the past months. With the new year about upon us, I thought it might be time for another go around for your surnames and research interests in Adams Co. How about a brief message listing the SURNAMES you are researching in Adams Co. along with some of your research successes or dead ends? In the meantime, be sure to back up your computer data before Friday night, just in case. As a routine matter, I do a complete backup each month, with interim backups on a daily basis. Better safe than sorry...it's come in handy a couple of times. Here are my primary surnames: SINGLETON, MANN, MCCONNEHEY, KIESS, WARNER, MEWHORTER My greatest success this year is finally locating, after about 20 years, where my g-g-grandfather Singleton lived in 1870 (from the census). I knew he left Pennsylvania by 1864 and appeared in Adams Co. by 1877, but had no clue where he was in between. I had begun a county by county search in the Ohio census records (what a job!). But an index to the 1870 census in Ohio was issued early this year. A quick look in the index gave me the county (Union Co., OH) and it was an easy matter to rent the census film to look up the records. Union was about the last county I would have looked at had the index not been available. Hi Everyone, I hope you've had a safe and happy holiday. Thanks to Marv Drier who teaches at Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School I've added a link to the Zion-Friedheim Lutheran Church website, which he maintains. He tells me that there is some historical information there now, and that there are plans to eventually place the records of the church, dating back to 1838, on the web site. I'm always glad to hear about information like this and will pass it along to you when I hear about it. There are also indexes to the Backesto and Reynolds cemetery books in the Decatur Public Library. The indexes were compiled and provided by David G. Smith. You'll find them by going to the Cemeteries link on the web site. Hello, I am the new State Coordinator for the Indiana Census Project and would like to urge each of you to consider transcribing a Census. I along with about a million other Genealogists would Thank you. Our Project was started by volunteers of The USGenWeb Project, to transcribe all of the US Federal Census' and upload them to the Internet where they will be available in a searchable archive for all, for FREE. We provide our volunteer transcribers with either a database Program, for census years 1850 and 1860, that has been written exclusively for this Project, or a spreadsheet template for all other years. Our programmer is writing updates that will eventually include all other years. For MAC users we have a Coordinator who specializes in MAC's and she will get you the templates you need. At this time we are unable to provide our transcribers with a copy of the census for the county they wish to transcribe. Each of you must obtain your own copy of the census you sign up for. You will be volunteering your time to transcribe and you will be volunteering the acquisition of the census information. This information can be acquired on CD or in book form. Please consider helping this worthwhile project. Best wishes Sandra USGENWEB Census Project Maryland State Coordinator Indiana State Coordinator Traces of the Past http//www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/7259
