Greetings, and a Happy New Year to Everyone! I am researching the following Adams Co. Surnames: BAUMGARTNER, ECKROTE, EGGER, HILTY, LEPPER, RYF, ZINK Mit meinen besten Grüßen, Duane S. Baumgärtner..............<duanebaumgartner@juno.com> Cogito ergo spud. (I think, therefore I yam.)
Hello everyone, Here are the names I am researching in Adams and Grant Cos.: HOOPER, Ezekiel m. Cornelia SWASEY (SWAYZE) and Almira Gorsline BOBO SWAYZE, Amos m. Henrietta CHRISFIELD POWELL, Joel F. m. Henrietta HOOPER HOOPER, Mary Ann (Henrietta's twin) m. George AMES HOOPER, Jacob HOOPER, Rachael Ann m. Dennis B. CLARY HOOPER, David HOOPER, Emeline m. William BOTTENBERG HOOPER, Paul Granville m. Charity E. HARROD The HOOPERs were an early pioneer family at Monmouth Twp. in Adams Co. IN, but their history and memory were lost to my family who migrated to Washington Territory in the 1870's. At a young age I became interested in family stories, and therefore I inherited my g.g.grandparents Joel and Henrietta POWELL's Family Bible. Little was known about my g.g.grandmother Henrietta Hooper POWELL because she died when her family was still relatively young and did not come west with them. It was recorded in the Bible that Joel and Henrietta were married at Marion, Grant Co., IN. One of Joel and Henrietta's sons was named Ezekiel Hooper POWELL. For a number of years I have searched the INGenWeb sites looking for an Ezekiel HOOPER as the possible father of Henrietta. One day in a matter of seconds I found Ezekiel HOOPER in the Monmouth Cemetery along with another surprise - a Mary Ann Hooper AMES who was born on the same day as Henrietta - TWINS! I contacted the database submitter for the cemetery which was non other than our own list member Nola RAINS. Within a month or so, this line fell into place all the way back to Henry II of England. What a great windfall to find g.g.g.grandfather Ezekiel HOOPER in the Monmouth Cemetery database. All thanks go to Nola for her steadfast work on behalf of the genealogy community. That was my exciting find for the year! Best wishes for the new year. Vana Fessler fessler@wolfenet,com

Does anyone have any connection to Etta Mallonee who died in 1960? She was born in Root twp., daughter of William and Rachel Archbold Mallonee, and worked in the Decatur Public Library for a number of years. She was a close friend of my grandmother Nettie Mann Singleton (they taught school together, I believe). I'm curious to know if her mother, Rachel, was connected to the family of Jeremiah Archbold or if it's a different Archbold family altogether. Thanks. My first relative into Adams Co. was Joseph Smith b. 1804 m. Lydia Reaves. They arrived about 1838 from Guernsey Co., OH. Other relatives included cousins that were Engles, and Joseph's sister who was Jemima b. 1808 and her husband John D. Brill. The Brill's were to have had 7 children, but have been unable to locate them. When the Civil War began, Joseph's brother John Minor Smith brought their mother Lydia Elizabeth Reed Smith to his brother Joseph's along with his wife Jemima Reed Smith (first cousin) her 3 children by her first husband Finley Chaney, and their 3 Smith sons. John joined the 89th IN Inf - H Co along with many other relatives and was killed 2 years later. Jemima stayed in IN until about 1885 when she left along with Jacob, Benjamin and James Smith and moved to Junction City, KS. I do not know for certain where the Chaney's went. (Jacob being my direct line). I have been very fortunate to have been able to get a large number of connections to Joseph Smith's children thanks to so many on this list. Some of the names include Roop, Ray, Sackett, Brandyberry,Russell and of course the Andrews and Archbold and a whole bunch more. So am looking for more on Engle, Brill, Chaney and I don't know if any of the Reeds moved there. Faith Keahey@cyberhighway.net
Tim, Got your inadams message. This is really interesting. Union county, Ohio is the next county west of me. When I first started looking back, I found that my g-g-g-grandfather had been born in Fairfield County, Ohio, the next county east of me. If I can help because of closeness, let me know. I found the Laisure stuff on my first try. I hooked up with David Smith. A lot of my family is buried in the Smith cemetery. It turns out I am related to half the people in Monroe, but never knew it. That was the town my great-grandparents lived in. I am now looking for Raudenbush stuff. That was my great-grandmother's maiden name. She was Elta (Alta) Arvilla Raudenbush Laisure. If you can pass anything on, let me know. I loved that woman. She was about the best person I have ever met in my life. They still tell stories about her in Monroe. My Adams County surnames (mainly Decatur, IN) are TERVEER, VOGLEWEDE, BRANDEWIEDE (BRANDEWEDA), HOLTHOUSE, MILLER, MEIBERS, BRAKE, BAGUS, THYE, CRAMER See http://home.fuse.net/egan/ Mike Egan Cincinnati, OH egan@fuse.net
Rachelle - I saw your posting on the Adams County IN list at INADAMS-L@rootsweb.com. We have some common names - it looks like a good change for a connection. The most promising names are TERVEER and KOHNE, as well as MILLER. TERVEER/KOHNE - my grandmother was Anna Terveer, born March 11, 1883 in Decatur. Her father was Bernard Terveer (actually Borchard John Bernard Terveer) born July 11, 1843 in Aschendorf, Germany. He married Mary Elizabeth BRANDEWEDA (or BRANDEWIEDE) on May 07, 1872 in St. Marys Church, Decatur. Marys father was Henry Brandeweda, who married Elizabeth KOHNE. MILLER - I have a John Miller, born November 01, 1815 in Sarlouis, Prussia, Germany, married Elizabeth MEIBERS on September 05, 1850, died November 23, 1871 in Decatur, Indiana. My records have five children - Margaret, John, Peter, Christena and Nicholas. If any connection, get in touch and I can share more. What a great idea, Tim. I've saved the postings -- who knows when I'll need someone's help? My primary Adams County surnames are: HANNI/HANNIE, ZAUGG, YOST, REPPERT, OWENS, CARNALL, THOMAS. Some of the secondary surnames are: Riesen, Campbell, Aeschbacher, and Zurcher/Zuercher. The majority of these families came from Canton Bern, Switzerland, during the middle 1800's. Our primary locations were Monroe, Decatur (I was born in Decatur General), Berne, Bluffton, and especially Vera Cruz (I realize some of these are in Wells Co., but my ancestors spent a lot of time both places). ** SPECIAL REQUEST ** If anyone has information on Susanna Aeschbacher Frei Yost (1834-1927; widow of Albrecht Frei, re-married Johann Yost), please contact me -- her only surviving granddaughter (who is now in her 90's) was very close to Susanna, and I'd like to send her as much information as possible. Looking forward to swapping information with anyone with shared lines. Amy
