    1. [INADAMS] God(d)ards of Adams Co., circa 1840-60
    2. Ebenezer Goddard built and owned a general store and gristmill with his business partner George W. Heath, in Pleasant Mills, during this time frame. Also known as E. A. Godard, he and some others did various work on the "State Road" which are listed in some records I have. Mr. Goddard apparently was also the man who "laid out" the town of Pleasant Mills. I finally found a tiny obit for him in the Manchester, Iowa newspaper of 1882. Mr. Goddard married Hannah Roebuck in the late 1820's. It appears that the Roebucks and this Goddard family had many connections as neighbors, etc. The name Michael Godard also appears as one of the earliest white men in the area. (I ignore spelling) I would love to find some sort of info that might lead me to find out where in PA this Ebenezer was born, circa 1800-1810 (as later census show). There weren't that many Goddards in PA at that time. But no luck as yet. I also have ideas that this family may have come from Simsbury, CT, before PA. They are NOT in any Goddard book. Other surnames associated with Mr. Goddard in Adams Co. are: HEATH, SHOWERS, BLACK, BLOSSOM. HELP!!! Thanks! Julie Arney oolie45@aol.com

Almost all of my folks were natives of Adams County after Daniel Paul Teeter moved into Adams from Darke co. Ohio in 1870. From Adams they spread out a little, to Allen, Wells, Jay, Randolph, etc. but I don't recall any in Steuben Co. Tom

    3. Posted on: Adams County, Indiana Obituaries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/AdamsObits?read=20 Surname: Baughman, Coffman, Geesaman, Huey, Shroll ------------------------- OBITUARY Clara Almeda (Baughman) Shroll, wife of John Allen Shroll, was born in Adams county, Indiana, May 24, 1860 and departed this life June 17, 1923, being 63 years and 24 days of age. Death was due to paralysis which took her in brief time of forty minutes. She was the daughter of Isaac and Mary Ann Baughman , both deceased. She was united in marriage to John Allen Shroll, July 26, 1881. To this union was born eleven children, four of whom have proceded in death. The husband and following children remain, Ernest of near Collette, Goldie, wife of Charles Coffman of near Phoenix, Earl of near Fiatt, Robert of Ft. Wayne, Frances, wife of Clarence Geesaman of Center, Leslie, wife of Jasper Geesaman of near Kit, and Mae, wife of Emmerson Huey of Portland. She leaves seven grandchildren and other relatives with a wide circle of friends. She had spent her entire life in Adams, Wells, and Jay Counties. Sister Shroll was a devoted wife, a kind and loving mother, always mindful of the needs of others, no task or duty was heavy for her if it brought comfort and joy to her home and family. She was energetic and painstaking with her household duties, toiling with her hands that her loved ones might receive comforts. Rest to the toiling hands has come, The voice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. But while we mourn today we do not mourn as those who have no hope. She was one of the body of Christ having united with the Church of Christ at Domestic in 1907, with which church she still held membership. She loved her Bible and it’s teaching. One of her favorite songs, that she asked the children to sing, " No Night There", we sing today. The joys and griefs of childhood borne, She shared with all a mother’s fervor My joys were jewls in her crown My griefs her clouds of sadness ever. For all my faults she made excuses My merits praised o’er every other She screened me from the world’s abuse And taught me to adore my mother. When manhood’s years and business cares At last compelled a separation She followed with her fondest prayers My every step and avocation. And then in my childhood years A dearer friend and worldly brother She shared my joys and anxious cares As none can do wxcept a mother. Funeral and burial at Center U.B. Church conductedby Thomas J. Wright. The Family desire to thank their neighbors and friens for their kindness in these sad hours and for the beautiful flowers. JOHN A. SHROLL and FAMILY

    3. Very good points Tim! That's pretty funny abt your own marriage record being wrong, but you do know that no matter what ANY document says your wife is the leading authority on this! :>) I'd just like to add something that everyone probably already knows. We all use the saying "it's not written in stone". Well even if it is it isn't. Tombstones are often wrong. The info is only as accurate as the memory of the person giving the info, often a bereaved relative who might not have really known the exact birthdate anyway. Some months ago I came across a newspaper article about the death of two men. According to the obit, one was "Orley Relfe," and it listed his survivors, including a daughter "Bessie." A few days later I realized that the man was Arley Relfe (my G-G-Grandfather) and "Bessie" was my Grandmother (Dessie). I can imagine that reporters might not know how to spell uncommon names like Arley and Dessie, or that reporters, typists, and typesetters might have difficulty reading some handwriting. All can introduce errors. -- Ted

    3. Margie Pearce have been trading information about our connections. She had asked me some few weeks ago about one individual that I had in my data as Sarah Hoover and she had as Sarah Hower. I checked and found that the obit, which is where I got my information, did indeed list her as Sarah Hoover, and wrote Margie to that effect. Then a couple of days ago, as I was posting some of the information I gathered on my last trip to Decatur in February, I discovered a marriage record from the courthouse that gave the name as Hower after all. I repeat this just to warn you that because you read something in an obit doesn't mean it's true. Family members, who provided the information, can be wrong, and the newspaper (sorry Dick Heller!) could also have made a typo. Now, you probably assume that original records (birth and death records at the Adams Co. Health Dept., or marriage records in the County Clerk's office) are always correct, right? Wrong. I have found any number of mistakes in original records as well. In fact, last trip I discovered that my own marriage record in the courthouse is incorrect...the date is wrong!!! (Besides my wife, I have written proof at home). Always be ready to accept that errors will occur. You simply have to do the best you can given the available records, and try to verify events through more than one source, if possible. And be ready to admit you're wrong when necessary. 3. Rachel, I don't know if I can help but below is an outline of what I know. Mary Bitler was married to Christopher B. Tharp or CB as he's shown on most records. He was her 3rd husband & she was his 2nd wife. They had no children. CB was my ancestor & some of the info on Mary I obtained from CB's Civil War pension. He married Mary just 3 months after his 1st wife died. Think that was a bit quick even for those times! The other info I obtained from the census, the 1850 is online & I have the 1860 on CD. I don't know if Mary had children w/ her 2nd husband. Let me know if this helps, just remember I don't have any othe info on her desc. 3. Hi Folks, Just to clarify, any queries posted to the boards on the Adams Co. web site, are now being forwarded automatically to this list. At the top of the message you'll see will be something like: Posted on: Adams County, In Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Adams?read=519 Be sure when you respond that you click on the Board URL which will take you directly to that message on the board. Post your reply there, following the directions. It's very likely that many people posting queries are not on this mailing list, and they will not see any replies you post directly here. Your reply on the board will automatically appear on this list as well. Any questions, let me know. I have not seen any of the recent viruses on this or the Randolph Co. list, which I manage. Rootsweb does a pretty good job of filtering out those kinds of problems. Just be sure never to open an email attachment unless you know exactly what it is and who it is from.
