Posted on: Adams County, In Query Forum Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Adams?read=589 Surname: France, Corbin ------------------------- Herbert B. France's father: The Hon. John Thomas France was born December 5,1853 in Delaware,Delaware Co.,Ohio. He is the eldest of two sons of Charles M. and Miranda (Thomas) France. Charles M. France was a native of Vermont, of Scotch and English parentage. In 1852 Charles married Miranda Thomas a native of Whitley Co.,Indiana, who died in 1857. John Thomas France was married October 19,1876 to Isabella Corbin, daughter of Elijah and Phoebe (Ullery) Corbin, natives of Virginia, who came to Indiana in 1846. Mrs.John France was born in Marion Co.,Indiana on June 2,1855. They had three children: Carl O. born December 12,1877; Richard R. born April 6,1879; and Herbert B. born March 6,1881. In another section of the book it gives the biography of William H.H. France, a brother of Charles M.(who is listed as an attorney here). It states William's and Charles' parents as Frederick and Alice France, both natives of Vermont. If you notice, the year of Herbert's birth is different. And it gives no info on the children. This info came from the book "The Biographical and Historical Record of Adam's County,Indiana- 1887" reprinted in 1977.It lists a lot more detail of his father's education and law career, and even has a sketch of him. I can send you more info if you wish. I am not related to this family, but hope this helps. Ellen

All the official records, or most, would be in Decatur. For example marriages and deeds in the court house, births and deaths in the annex (old Decatur High School [Rah! Rah!]), probate records in the county jail. There is more detailed information on records and their locations on the Adams web site. And of course, don't forget census records...you can get them on interlibrary loan in many places, and you can also rent the films yourself from various organizations. They're now even available on CD-Rom which you can purchase for a very reasonable fee. 25 July 2000 Re: Birth Registration for persons born at Sea Hello List(s), One of my ancestors was 'born on the boat coming over' to the USA. I wanted to know where a birth certificate might be recorded for a birth at sea. The following is an answer from the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild. Thought I would pass it along in the event others need the information as well. "In general they are registered at the port of arrival. They can, however, also be registered at the port (to) which the ship belongs. If a ship from England was coming to New York, most times the birth would be registered in the county nearest the port of arrival. Ellis Island, for instance. Sometimes people waited and didn't register (the birth) until they arrived in their settlement area. It really depends on the time frame and the laws governing birth registration at the time. Sheila Tate Production Coordinator Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild http://istg.rootsweb.com Give your children these two things - One is roots, the other, wings" Hope this helps others. Know it will help me. Happy trails, Janet A. Nelson j.nelson@mciworld.com

Can anyone tell me where to find the most comprehensive history for these areas? My ancestors were from there circa 1830-1850. I have copies of bits and pieces from various publications. Am wondering what library or courthouse would have the records for these areas... Any clues greatly appreciated! Julie oolie45@aol.com

Indiana Biographies Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/AdamsBios?read=7 Surname: Dubach ------------------------- The following article appeared in the History of Adams and Wells County Book, pages 711 & 712 FRED DUBACH is one of the live and enterprising farmers of Hartford Township, Adams County. He is proprietor of a productive farm, practically all of which represents his individual labors and strivings, is looked upon as one of the substantial men of his community, and both in his private affairs and in his relations to hie fellow citizens has lived a life admirable in every respect. The Dubach farm lies in section 15 of Hartford Township, a half mile west and a mile and a quarter south of Linn Grove. Like a large number of the substantial citizens of this section of Indiana, Mr. Dubach is a native of Switzerland, where he was born October 25, 1868. His parents, John and Rosina (Galle) Dubach spent their years in their native land until 1882, when with their children they came to the United States and located near Domestic in Nottingham Township of Wells County, Indiana. His father was one of the honored and respected citizens of that locality until his death in 1980, and the widowed mother still occupies the old farm. There were twelve children in the family, eleven of whom are still living: Rosetta, living in Wells County; John, of Wells County; Fred; Eliza, wife of Benjamin Speheger, of Harrison Township, Wells County : Charles, of Nottingham Township; Rosa, wife of John Speheger, of Wells County; Lena, widow of Amos Stucky, of French Township, Adams County, Indiana ; Emma, wife of John Heyerly, of Craigville, Indiana ; Eli, who is married and occupies the home farm ; David, unmarried and still at home ; and Daniel, who was killed in the Kingsland wreck of September 21, 1910. Mr. Dubach married Aldine Gerber, who was born in French Township of Adams County March 2, 1870, daughter of Christ Gerber, one of the prominent Swiss colonists of that county. After his marriage Mr. Dubach settled on a farm in French Township, was in that locality ten years, and then removed to his present place in Hartford Township. The Dubach farm comprises 100 acres, and everything about it indicates the thrift and enterprise of the owner. He has raised bountiful crops and keeps some good grades of livestock of all kinds. Mr. and Mrs. Dubach have four children : Calvin, Edna, Roy and Elmer, all still at home. The family are members of the German Reformed Church at Vera Cruz, Indiana. Mr. Dubach is a democrat, and besides his farm is a stockholder in the Linn Grove Farmers Bank.
In answer the question about the Crawford Cemetery, I was there last week. I was pleased to find it in relatively good shape. My ancestor, Josiah Crawford, is buried there. His grave site did have a large weed growing on it but the marker is in tact and visible It goes without saying I was thrilled to find his grave. I had hoped to find my ggrandparents (William and Sarah VANCE) there also. Their original home was located near Berne. M Lewis

This cemetery is located due East of Bern. Many of my Rawley, Abnet and Harshbarger ancestors are buried there. I was last there some dozen or so years ago. At that time, it was beginning to show the signs of overgrowth various plants and grasses. Does anyone know what the current condition is? Louie
