Today August 4, 2000 My wife and I visited the Clark's Chapel Cemetery in Adams County, Indiana. It has been a while since we had been there and we were appalled at what is being done there. Someone is dumping dirt in the cemetery. There had been several truck loads of dirt dumped in the back end of the drive into the cemetery. It looks like someone dug a basement for a house and dumped their excess dirt there. Who is responsible for this and who can we contact to make a complaint to. Since I do not live in Adams County I doubt the county commissioners would pay me no mind, but I would be willing to try. My wife's grandparents great-grandparents and several other ancestors are buried in this cemetery. This is very heartbreaking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. G. Virtually all of the 1890 census records were destroyed in a fire. There are none for any county in Indiana that I'm aware of. In Adams County, and generally throughout the state, birth and death records were not kept until 1882. The Adams Co. health dept. has no records prior to that year. The Decatur Public Library has microfilm of nearly every newspaper published in Decatur (with some exceptions due to fire). You can see a list by going to the web site and clicking on the proper link. 28 July 2000 Re: A death certificate ca. 1879 Hi List, Can anyone tell me where to obtain a death certificate for the year 1879? Where can I find the names of Newspapers in the Decatur area in 1879? Am hoping to locate an obituary for my great-great Grandmother, Sarah H. (maiden name unknown) Stephens. Information and suggestions definitely appreciated. Thank you. Regards, Janet A. Nelson j.nelson@mciworld.com
In my experience there are very few Indiana death records in the 1870's. A few were filed in Fort Wayne itself, but generally not in rural areas like Decatur. Your better chance will be if you can find a church burial record for her because these could be more detailed, depending on the pastor or priest. Obituaries in that period were usually quite short and general, and often did not run for women at all unless an accident or other unusual event like a fire had occurred. Good luck in your search, Richard Scheimann
