Chloe Harkless, 85, of Decatur, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 30, 2009, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.     She was born on August 27, 1924, in Adams County to James Clifford and Alvina (Bucher) Harkless.     She is survived by 11 nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by a nephew.     Chloe was a member of the former Pleasant Grove United Brethren Church. She served as a youth leader for over 40 years with the church’s Christian Endeavor Youth Organization.     She worked at General Electric in Decatur and retired after 42 years of service.     Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today, November 2, 2009, at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home in Decatur.     The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, with calling one hour prior to the service. Rev. Mark Beers will officiate.     Burial will take place in Decatur Cemetery.     Memorials may be made to The Gideon’s International, to the Adams County Historical Society, or to the donor’s choice.

Myers Several Decatur people attended the funeral services held in Fort Wayne for William H. Myers, Civil War veteran, formerly of this city. Mr. Myers died Friday and his funeral was held Sunday afternoon. His remains were shipped to Bowling Green, O., for interment in a mausoleum at the Bowling Green cemetery. Mr. Myers lived in this city for many years. He was a prominent member of the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic and for many years was its commander. Until two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Myers lived on Adams street in Decatur. Recently they moved to Fort Wayne where Mr. Myers died. Death was due to hardening of the arteries, and infirmities of old age. He was an officer in the Civil War and served the entire war period. Mr. Myers was one of the youngest men to enlist for service. He was born in Ohio and at the time of his death was seventy-eight years of age. Mr. Myers had been in failing health for some time, but recently he rallied and death was not expected at the time. Mr. Myers was also prominent in all public affairs while a resident of this city, having made hundreds of friends. Mrs. Ida Myers, his wife, survives. He had been ill for two weeks and a week ago yesterday was taken to the hospital for treatment. Francis Marion Andrews, the son of Thomas H. and Sarah Andrews, both deceased, was born on December 21, 1856 in Washington township, and died Friday night August 30 at 7:30 o'clock at the Adams County Memorial hospital. One December 8, 1881, he was united in marriage to Mary Ida Wiseley who survives him. To this union no children were born. Besides the widow, two sisters survive the deceased. They are Mrs. Thomas Baltzell of Decatur, and Mrs. George McKean of Granite City, Ill. Mr. Andrews had been in good health until this summer when he began ailing. Two weeks ago he became bedfast and a week ago was taken to the Adams County Memorial hospital. He has been a farmer all his life, residing at Decatur route 5. He was a member of the Washington township Methodist church during his lifetime. The funeral will be at the home, near Decatur, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock (Standard Time) with Rev. D. V. Williams officiating. Burial will be made in the Ray Cemetery west of Monroe. Friends are requested to please omit flowers. MCCONNELL DIES IN OREGON Former Adams County Sheriff Dies Monday At Age Of 82 Years Mark Mills McConnell, 82, former sheriff of Adams county and years ago a leader in politics and public affairs, died yesterday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. Ben T. Pillars, of Dalles, Oregon, from dropsy and complications due to his age. Mr. McConnell was a brother of Frank McConnell, the well-known wholesale merchant of this city, and was born south of this city in April 1845. When a boy, he came to this city with his parents and, when a young man, became interested in politics. He served as deputy sheriff under Michael McGriff and Perry Lewton and was then elected sheriff, serving one term. He left here about thirty-five years ago, moving to Cardwell, Mo., where he was employed for a number of years by the late John T. Vail. He accumulated considerable property there, which grew into value. Mrs. McConnell died in 1912, and immediately afterward Mr. McConnell went to The Dalles, where he has since made his home with his only daughter. His health has been failing for several months and announcement of his death came this morning in a night letter to Frank McConnell, dated last evening and which read: "Father McConnell passed away at 7:30 this morning. Will lay him away here for the present. Funer! al Wednesday afternoon. Rest of family well. B. T. Pillars." Besides the daughter, surviving close relatives are two brothers, Frank of this city, and Lane, of Los Angeles, California. W. Haggard, 927 Nuttman avenue, at 3:15 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Mr. Hendricks had been suffering from a complication of diseases for the last four weeks. Miller Hendricks was born in Monroe and spent his entire life in Adams county. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. C. W. Haggard, and one brother, William Hendricks of Monroe. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church in Monroe. He had been ill for two weeks and a week ago yesterday was taken to the hospital for treatment. Francis Marion Andrews, the son of Thomas H. and Sarah Andrews, both deceased, was born on December 21, 1856 in Washington township, and died Friday night August 30 at 7:30 o'clock at the Adams County Memorial hospital. One December 8, 1881, he was united in marriage to Mary Ida Wiseley who survives him. To this union no children were born. Besides the widow, two sisters survive the deceased. MCCONNELL DIES IN OREGON Former Adams County Sheriff Dies Monday At Age Of 82 Years Mark Mills McConnell, 82, former sheriff of Adams county and years ago a leader in politics and public affairs, died yesterday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. Ben T. Pillars, of Dalles, Oregon, from dropsy and complications due to his age. Mr. McConnell was a brother of Frank McConnell, the well-known wholesale merchant of this city, and was born south of this city in April 1845. When a boy, he came to this city with his parents and, when a young man, became interested in politics. He served as deputy sheriff under Michael McGriff and Perry Lewton and was then elected sheriff, serving one term. He left here about thirty-five years ago, moving to Cardwell, Mo., where he was employed for a number of years by the late John T. Vail. He accumulated considerable property there, which grew into value. Mrs. McConnell died in 1912, and immediately afterward Mr. McConnell went to The Dalles, where he has since made his home with his only daughter. His health has been failing for several months and announcement of his death came this morning in a night letter to Frank McConnell, dated last evening and which read: "Father McConnell passed away at 7:30 this morning. Will lay him away here for the present. Funer! al Wednesday afternoon. Rest of family well. B. T. Pillars." Besides the daughter, surviving close relatives are two brothers, Frank of this city, and Lane, of Los Angeles, California. Myers Several Decatur people attended the funeral services held in Fort Wayne for William H. Myers, Civil War veteran, formerly of this city. Mr. Myers died Friday and his funeral was held Sunday afternoon. His remains were shipped to Bowling Green, O., for interment in a mausoleum at the Bowling Green cemetery. Mr. Myers lived in this city for many years. He was a prominent member of the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic and for many years was its commander. Until two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Myers lived on Adams street in Decatur. Recently they moved to Fort Wayne where Mr. Myers died. Death was due to hardening of the arteries, and infirmities of old age. He was an officer in the Civil War and served the entire war period. Mr. Myers was one of the youngest men to enlist for service. He was born in Ohio and at the time of his death was seventy-eight years of age. Mr. Myers had been in failing health for some time, but recently he rallied and death was not expected at the time. Mr. Myers was also prominent in all public affairs while a resident of this city, having made hundreds of friends. Mrs. Ida Myers, his wife, survives. Mr. McConnell was a brother of Frank McConnell, the well-known wholesale merchant of this city, and was born south of this city in April 1845. When a boy, he came to this city with his parents and, when a young man, became interested in politics. He served as deputy sheriff under Michael McGriff and Perry Lewton and was then elected sheriff, serving one term. He left here about thirty-five years ago, moving to Cardwell, Mo., where he was employed for a number of years by the late John T. Vail. He accumulated considerable property there, which grew into value. Mrs. McConnell died in 1912, and immediately afterward Mr. McConnell went to The Dalles, where he has since made his home with his only daughter. His health has been failing for several months and announcement of his death came this morning in a night letter to Frank McConnell, dated last evening and which read: "Father McConnell passed away at 7:30 this morning. Will lay him away here for the present. Funer! al Wednesday afternoon. Rest of family well. B. T. Pillars." Besides the daughter, surviving close relatives are two brothers, Frank of this city, and Lane, of Los Angeles, California. She was born on March 11, 1908 in Caddo County, Oklahoma, to Willis M. and Rachel Fields Burdg. She married O. Kenneth Zerkel on December 19, 1925; he died in 1952. She was a former office worker at Dunbar Furniture in Berne and was a bookkeeper for the Berne IGA grocery for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Missionary Society and Calvary United Metodist (sic) Church of Linn Grove. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Kathleen) Sauers, rural Decatur, and Mrs. Larry (Sherryl) Martin, Logansport; four sons, Gene Zerkel, Anchorage, Alaska; James M. Zerkel, Joplin, Missouri; Jerry L. Zerkel, Little Rock, Arkansas; and Ronald B. Zerkel, Fort Myers, Florida; 30 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, Gilbert and Wayne Burdg, and two sisters, Bessie Croy and Lucy Doke. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Calvary United Methodist Church, with burial in MRE Cemetery, Berne. Visiting hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. - noon Saturday in Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne, and from 1-2 p.m. Saturday in the church. Preferred memorials are to the church. Her death occurred at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Andrews. Mrs. Davis was born near Monroe, February 25, 1870, and had been a resident of this county all her life. Surviving besides the parents and the husband are the following children: Clarence Davis, of Ossian; Nellie Dellinger, Willshire, Ohio; Dessie D. Brown, Decatur; Leona and Keith Davis, residing at home. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Edward, John, Casie, Arth, Rex and Ralph Andrews. Wade and Jess, brothers, are deceased. Funeral services will be held from the home, near Monroe, the Rev. Reichenbach, pastor of the Friends' church officiating. Burial will be at the Ray cemetery.
