Sprunger, 89, of Berne, died on Sunday night in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born on March 12, 1914 in Adams County to Charles and Ethel Siler Jones. She married Lowell Sprunger; he died in 1992. She was a former employee of The Winner House and the Berco firm, both in Berne, and was a member of First Mennonite Church at Berne. Surviving are three sons, Powell Sprunger of Celina, Ohio; Melville Sprunger of Phoenix, Arizona; and Michael Sprunger of Leamington, Utah; a brother, Ben Jones of Berne; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A daughter, a sister, and a brother are deceased. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne, with burial in MRE Cemetery, rural Berne. RAY Raymond C. Ray, 89, of Whitley County, a native of Adams County, died at 7:40 p.m. Sunday in Whitley County Memorial Hospital at Columbia City. He was born in Monroe on March 16, 1896 to Elmer J. and Lessie M. Striker-Ray, and married the former Dora A. Marshall; she died in 1976. The couple moved to Whitley County in 1924. Mr. Ray, a farmer and a general contractor, is survived by three sons: Ernest Ray of Whitley County, Francis Ray of Haines City, Florida and Raymond C. Ray Jr. of Colorado; a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Maxine) Welsheimer of Columbia City; three sisters, Ortha Townsend of Berne, Francile Bauer of South Bend, and Florine Durbin of New Haven; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Two sons, Robert and Don Ray, a brother and a sister are deceased. Funeral services were held this afternoon in Columbia City with burial in Jefferson Chapel Cemetery.     3. Hopefully EVERHART researchers are aware of the picture of Bazel Everhart (1846-1926) that appeared in the FW Journal Gazette on Sunday, 17 April 1960, first page of Magazine Section E. The article is on file in the Decatur library. He was Monroe’s first honorary town marshal and owned all of the land that became the town site. The picture shows him with right hand on a long staff and with a pistol tucked in the breast pocket of his jacket.

Brandyberry, 45, of 2821 Beaver Avenue, Fort Wayne, died at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brandyberry, 315 North Tenth street in this city. Death followed an illness of two years. He was born in Berne Oct. 5, 1906, a son of Frank and Ada Barber-Brandyberry. He attended the Decatur high school and lived here for a number of years. In recent years he had operated a grocery and meat market on Fairfield Avenue in Fort Wayne. He was married to Marie Reffey Dec. 31, 1930. Mr. Brandyberry was a member of the Royal Arch Masons and the Shrine at Terre Haute, the Knights Templar at Fort Wayne and the Allen county sheriff's reserve posse. Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter, Janice Roe, at home; four brothers, Gregg of Fort Wayne, Robert of Bluffton, and Chester and Randolph, both of Decatur; and three sisters, Miss Marcella Brandyberry, a major in the army nurses corps in France, Mrs. Gertrude Waddy of Mineral Wells, Tex., and Miss Florence Brandyberry of Decatur. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Zwick funeral home, the Rev. Samuel Emerick officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur cemetery. Born in Decatur on Oct. 4, 1897, he was the son of Ezra and Lucy Hoffman-LeBrun, and was married on March 19, 1918, to Elsie Miller, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Robert L. LeBrun, route 1, Rockford, O.; Mrs. Gerald (Marjorie) DeBolt, route 1, Markle; Richard D. ZUMBRUM Alfred E. Zumbrum, 76, 317 High St., Berne, a long-time member of the Berne Police Department, died at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at his private rifle range south of Berne. Death was attributed to a heart attack. The World War II veteran was a Berne policeman for 35 years, retiring in 1974; he then worked for Berne Furniture Co. for several years. He was a gun collector and an expert marksman. A member of the Cross United Church of Christ in Berne, Mr. Zumbrum was born February 6, 1906 in Pierce, Nebraska, the son of Albert and Rosa Zumbrum. He was married August 23, 1932 in Berne to Caroline Sommer, who survives. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Emma Beutler, Pierce, Nebraska and Mrs. Laura Voechs, Norfolk, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Yager Funeral Home, Berne, Rev. Robert Kauffman officiating and burial will be in the MRE Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Berne American Eagles Post. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the church assistance fund.
