RACHEL MARTZ DIES EARLY SUNDAY Funeral Services Tuesday Afternoon Mrs. Rachel Martz, 89, a native of Adams County, died at 4:30 o'clock Sunday morning at the Haven Hubbard memorial home in New Carlisle, where she had resided since 1948. She had been in failing health since suffering a fractured hip in a fall in January. Mrs. Martz was a member of the Bethany Evangelical United Brethren church in this city. Surviving are a son, Roy Runyon of Decatur; a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Fuhrman of Syracuse; four stepsons, Coy Martz of Monroe, Thurman Martz of Dewey, Okla., Ira Martz of Avilla and Ferdinand Martz of Fort Wayne; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Bessie Wittwer of Vicksburg, Miss.; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Yager funeral home at Berne, the Rev. Benj. G. Thomas officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert Schrock. Burial will be in the Alberson cemetery southwest of Linn Grove. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of the services. MANGOLD Mrs. Rachel Mangold Dies This Morning at County Hospital Mrs. Rachel Mangold, 82, prominent Decatur lady and widow of the late Noah Mangold, died this morning at 12:10 o'clock at the Adams County Memorial Hospital. Her death was attributed to complications, following a fractured leg sustained two weeks ago in a fall at her home. Mrs. Mangold was born in Preble Township April 3, 1859, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Weldy. She was married to Noah Mangold on December 2, 1880. He preceded her in death January 17, 1939. She was a devout member of the First Christian Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Glenys Kern, at home and a sister, Mrs. Mary Gault of Marion. Two sons, a daugher, nine brothers and sisters are deceased. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Black funeral home with Rev. Kenneth Timmons, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur Cemetery. The body was removed to the Black funeral home and it may be viewed there after 7 o'clock this evening unitl time for the services. A retired businessman, Mr. Beer was the owner of Habit Cleaners in Berne for 36 years before retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Berne Lions Club and of Cross United Church of Christ, where he was in the church choir. A member of Berne American Legion Post 468, Mr. Beer was a World War II veteran with the United States Army. Born in Adams County on November 17, 1917, he was the son of Harve and Rosa Liechty-Beer. He was married on Janurary 16, 1942, to Ruth Borne; she died in 1990. Survivors include two sons, Randy L. Beer, Berne, and Richard "Rick" A Beer, Wells, Maine; two daughters, Mrs. Greg (Deborah) Stewart, Berne, and Mrs. Skip (Sherill) Handy, Fort Wayne; three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Leyse, Monroe; Mrs. Sarabelle Zeigler, Berne and Mrs. Iona Melchi, Fort Wayne; and seven grandchildren. A sister, Irene Sprunger is deceased. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cross United Church of Christ, Berne, with burial in the MRE Cemetery, Berne. Although he had been in failing health, his death was unexpected. Mr. Burke was formerly supervisor of Kraft Foods plant in Decatur, and for the past 15 years had been supervisor of Kraft Foods in Cadillac Mich. He was a member of a hunting party in Michigan and was found dead in bed when the hunting party returned to the lodge about noon Tuesday. Born in Blue Creek Township Feb. 8, 1914, he was a son of William and Alta Bryan-Burke, and was married to Lola Patterson March 6, 1937. Mr. Burke was a graduate of the Pleasant Mills high school. Surviving are his wife; two sons, James Burke of Kokomo, and Larry Burke of Cadillac, Mich.; his father, William Burke; two brothers, Marion Burke of Cincinnati, O., and Don Burke of Decatur; and seven grandchildren. Father of county resident dies. FRANK B. KETROW, 77, of Van Wert, Ohio, father of an Adams county lady, died Tuesday evening at 9:15 in the Van Wert County Hospital, following an extended period of illness. He retired from Central Soya 11 years ago. Mr. KETROW was born 24 April 1896 the son of William J. and Fairy FIGLER-KETROW of Rockford, Ohio. The parents preceded him in death. He was married 3 January 1953 to Minnie CORATHERS who survives. Other survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Don (Evelyn) BOLLENBACHER of Decatur route 6, Mrs. John (Ruth) SCHNACK of Celina, (Ohio), and Mrs. Bill (Dorothy) SCHUMM and Mrs. Charles (Eloise) JONES, both of Willshire, (Ohio); a son, Lowell of Lebanon, Illinois; and 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Three brothers preceded him in death. Mr KETROW was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Van Wert; the Van Wert Post of the American Legion where he served as past commander; World War I Barracks; and the Buffalos, a World War I organization. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (Ohio time) Friday at the Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Lloyd GROSS officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery at Van Wert. Edward WEINMAN, 67, of Willshire, Ohio, route 1, brother of Mrs. Phil SAUER of Decatur, died at 2:15 p.m. Sunday at the Van Wert Manor Nursing Home following a long illness. He was a son of John G. and Mary Elizabeth GUNSETT-WEINMAN, he never married. Mr. WEINMAN was a member of the Zion Lutheran church at Schumm, Ohio. He was formerly employed at a grocery store clerk and a night watchman at the Fred A. Smith Sawmill in Schumm. Only survivors are the sister, Mrs. Phil (Minda) SAUER of Decatur, a number of nieces and nephews. One sister and four brothers are deceased. A brother Carl died last Wednesday. Funeral services well be held at 2:30 p.m. (Ohio time) Tuesday at the Cowen and Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Rev. Robert D. SCHULER, officiating. Survivors include her husband, two sons, Richard of Fort Wayne, and Roger of Fort Smith, Arkansas; one daughter, Mrs. William (Elaine) BONDY of Bonita Springs, Florida; one brother, Bert MERRIMAN of Bradley, Illinois; three sisters, June BEECHER, of Indianapolis, Ann SEIBERT of Scottsville, Arizona and Mary WINTEREGG of Decatur; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. BOLLENBACHER will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Haggard and Armes Funeral Home in Decatur with the Revs. Robert DYE and David BOLLENBACHER officiating. COURTNEY, 39, DIES; Active in JOBS Program Mrs. Gloria R. COURTNEY, 39, of 325 N. Nineth Street, active worker in the Headstart program and JOBS, Inc., died at 1:55 p.m. Friday at the Adams County Memorial Hospital, following an illness of the past few months. She had been hospitalized since April 16. She was the first and only county chairman of the JOBS, Inc., (Joint Organization For Broader Services) and was elected to that position in 1967. Mrs. Courtney was also elected to the executive board in Portland and served five years in that capacity. She was active in all the Community Action Programs and was a volunteer for the Headstart Program. She worked toward low income housing, and was instrumental in getting the Community Action Center at the Lincoln School. Mrs. Courtney also took care of all write-ups for the newspaper in these fields. NINE CHILDREN Born in Mercer County, Ohio, on 20 December 1923, she was the daughter of Howell and Verba BRUNSTETTER-DUFF, and was married 19 December 1956 to Orville E. (Gene) COURTNEY. Surviving are the husband, her father (who resides at 815 Madison Street); nine children, Deborah, Elaine, Sylvia, Rhonda, Marci, Pamela, John, Daniel and William; the maternal grandfather, Clarence BRUNSTETTER, Fort Wayne; one sister Mrs. Darryl (Sandra) BAILEY of Coronado, California; and two brothers, Richard DUFF of route 3 Columbia City and Donald DUFF of Decatur. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Zwick Funeral Home, with Rev. Fuhrman MILLER officiating.
