    3. HISTORY OF LAWRENCE, ORANGE AND WASHINGTON COUNTIES, INDIANA: FROM THE EARLIEST TIME TO THE PRESENT (Chicago: Goodspeed Bros. & Co., Publishers, 1884), p. 611. William W. Lindley was born in Orange County, September 24, 1824, and is the third child of Owen and Mary (Wilson) Lindley. Owen Lindley was a prominent early settler and came from North Carolina with his parents in 1811 and was born in that state August 10, 1793, and married in Washington County, Indiana, in 1819. His wife was born in North Carolina August 31, 1793. They were highly respected and members of the Friends Church. The father died August 2, 1871, and his wife in 1878. Our subject is a farmer and resides on the land on which he was born. He married in 1870, Deborah J., daughter of Robert and Polly Williams, and by this marriage there are five children: Annie D., Mary E., Della, Rutherford and James C. Mr. Lindley has a birthright in the Friends Church. He is one of the leading fathers and stock raisers and takes an active interest in the promotion of the farming community. He is a Republican and, of course, his parents being Friends were opposed to slavery before the war. He and wife are people of much worth and respectability.
