Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Telephone, July 24, 1914, p, 4. NOTE: In another article Weber is identified as Webber. CHARGED WITH BEATING HIS 80-YEAR-OLD MOTHER Brown County how has a prisoner in its county jail charged with attempt to murder. It is Charles Weber, aged 24, of Hamblin Township, for beating his mother, Mrs. Samuel Weber, a woman 80 years old, and the charge is attempt to murder. The frail old lady was beaten, so the report says, because she employed a man to build a fence without consulting her son. Young Weber beat her until he thought she was dead and then left the house heavily armed. Neighbors found the aged woman on the floor of her home unconscious. According to the disconnected story told by Mrs. Weber, her son struck her in the face with his fist, knocked her down and then choked her. As she lost consciousness she saw the man go to the door, evidently believing his mother dead, and then turned in time to see a slight movement of his victim, which brought him back to renew the attack. When he resumed the choking, Mrs. Weber lost consciousness. Sheriff Calvin had been warned to expect a battle with young Weber, but the latter surrendered his revolver peacefully. He admitted that he slapped his mother and might have hit her with his fist, but he denied choking her. Three years ago, a year before his death, Weber's father was shot in the arm by his son during a quarrel. The young man was sent to an insane hospital and remained there a short time. After his release he did not return to his home where his mother had been living alone until two weeks ago. Mrs. Weber has one other son, Samuel, who has gained a fortune by gold mining in Alaska.
