Indianapolis (IN) News, April 10, 1896, p. 6. Scottsburg, Ind., April 10-Aunt Betsey Hougland died yesterday at the home of her grandson, John Sierp, in this city. Mrs. Hougland was over 80 years old. Her entire life was spent in Scott County, having been born in Austin four miles north of here. She was the mother-in-law of John H. J. Sierp, editor and proprietor of the Scott County Democrat. The deceased leaves four children, three sons and one daughter, her husband having preceded her over 30 years ago. She was well known here as a most estimable woman and was a life-long member of the Baptist Church.
