    3. Indianapolis (IN) Star, August 22, 1912, p. 4. SENT TO CELL TO AVOID LYNCHING Suffering from Gunshot Wound, Burglar is Hastened to Jeffersonville Prison Seymour, Ind., August 21-Suffering from a gunshot wound inflicted by Chief of Police J. T. Abell, and fearful for his life, not only from the effects of the wound and the subsequent amputation of his leg but also that angry citizens might break into the hospital where he was under guard and take summary vengeance, Oliver Sndyer, accused of burglary and of an attack on a woman, was taken to the reformatory at Jeffersonville this afternoon. The events leading up to his sudden trip were dramatic. Shortly before last midnight, he began a series of burglaries following a plan that he had carried out before when committing crimes. After robbing a house he would break into an adjoining residence and bide while the police searched for him, then rob that house and enter another. Seen leaving a house at one o'clock, a policeman shot at him, the bullet grazing his shoulder. This did not deter him; four more houses were robbed. Later a squad of police sighted him and gave chase. A bullet from the chief's revolver went through his right thigh and he was captured. At the hospital it was found necessary to amputate the right leg, and even then the physician said he was not out of danger. Later in the morning it developed that when he entered the home of George Lockmund he found Mrs. Lockmund alone, her husband being at his duties as a night man in the railroad yards. After robbing the house, he attacked Mrs. Lockmund and so frightened her with threats that she was afraid to say anything until she heard he was under arrest. When news of this attack became circulated, the people became excited and the mayor wired Gov. Marshall of the situation. The result was an order to remove him at once to Jeffersonville and this was done, the trip being made by traction line on a car that was stopped outside the city limits. HAS A CRIMINAL RECORD-Snyder left home in Brown County yesterday with a load of apples that he sold in Columbus and came to this place. His father is a minister. He has taught several terms of school in Brown County. Some years ago he was arrested at Scottsburg following a series of robberies, convicted and sentenced to a term in Jeffersonville. This tem he served, being released from prison June 20. At the time of his arrest in Scottsburg, his trial was one of the speediest on record. He was arrested at seven o'clock, pronounced guilty at ten, and before noon had begun serving time.
