He got safely into and out of seven places, but in the eighth, when he said, "Hang it up," the bartender gave him a dreadful whipping. There were six more bars to cover, and he struggled on; but his appearance was now against him, and at the eleventh his skull was fractured with a club; so he lost the bet.
