Ft. Wayne (IN) Daily Gazette, August 24, 1869, p. 1. Louisville, August 23-A horrible and unaccountable double suicide was enacted yesterday at Jeffersonville, Ind., the victims being a newly-married couple. George Barnacle, a German, after drinking whisky to excess with his wife, went out and procured a half gallon of beer that he brought home. His wife drank some of this beer and within ten minutes was a corpse. Before Barnacle could be prevented, he drank a large quantity of the same beer and died about noon, half an hour after his wife expired. Upon making an analysis of the beer, it was found to contain arsenic and morphine, and it is supposed Barnacle put it in the beer as he and his wife were heard to talk of poisoning each other during their drunken orgies. Bernacle (sic) had been in low spirits since his marriage by reason of a false statement that his wife's former husband was still living.
