Elkhart (IN) Daily Review, December 9, 1899, p. 1. A GIFT TO WABASH COLLEGE Large Collection of Prehistoric Relics of Rare Value Scottsburg, Indiana, December 9-James E. Mitchell of this city has sold his collection of Indian and prehistoric relics to Wabash College. The collection is one of rare value and is one of the largest and best known private collections in Indiana. Mitchell spent 20 years in making the collection, and it includes many of the smaller, private collections of Southern Indiana. The collection, as shipped, numbered between 7,000 and 8,000 pieces. The bulk of the collection came from Scott and adjoining counties. Besides the immense assortment of Indian relics, a large part of it consisted of choice relics of mound-builders, while still another section was devoted to the pottery and implements of the cliff dwellers of Colorado.
