New Orleans (LA) Times-Picayune, June 17, 1879, p. 6. NOTE: Consider Christianson a spelling variant of Christeson. LEPROSY IN INDIANA [St. Louis Globe-Democrat] Salem, Indiana, June 10-A fully developed case of leprosy exists in our county. The name of the leper is Christeson (sic), and she lives twelve miles north of here. Her skull in places has actually decayed away so that the brains have protruded and been removed. The bones of the leg have gradually decayed until they are only from one-quarter to one-third their natural size. She is, as it were, a walking pestilence. The physicians say that it is a real case of leprosy. The unfortunate person has been a resident of this county for thirty years.
