    3. Chicago (IL) Daily Inter Ocean, June 8, 1874, p. 2. MURDER AND SUICIDE Jeffersonville, Indiana, June 6-John McDermott, a saloon keeper in this city said to be under the influence of liquor most of the time, committed a horrible murder at six o'clock this evening. He has been in the habit of abusing his wife who, it is said, was equally abusive to him. She left him and had applied for a divorce, and the trial was set for Wednesday next. McDermott called at his mother-in-law's residence where his wife was, asking her to come back and live with him which she agreed to do on Monday. He then left the house and returned in ten minutes with a large Navy revolver and found Mrs. McDermott nursing her baby. He raised the weapon and deliberately fired at her. The ball struck the baby in the forehead passing clear through the head and lodging in the right breast of its mother producing a probable fatal wound. He then placed a revolver to his head and blew his own brains out. The baby died instantly, and there is little hope of the recovery of the mother.
