Board member of Riverview Cemetery in Seymour said the cemetery now is charging $25 for each grave location staff looks up in cemetery records. This was brought to my attention by someone who wanted to make photographs for eight requests on Find-a-Grave but was unwilling to pay $200 to learn where to find the graves. The Seymour Library does lookups of grave locations through 2003 at no charge but has been unable to obtain copies of records since that time. The board member was unaware that the library had copies of the records. Hours at the library are 8:30am-8:30pm Mondays-Thursdays, 8:30-6 Fridays, 9-5 Saturdays and 1-5 Sundays. The board member said staff often is out of the office while doing cemetery maintenance and must interrupt their work and go to the office for the lookups and then, because of computer problems, must do the lookups on plat maps in the maintenance garage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Charlotte Sellers, Local History Specialist Jackson County Public Library 303 West 2nd Street, Seymour IN 47274 Voice 812-522-3412 x1256 / Fax 812-522-5456 Email: csellers@myjclibrary.org Web: www.myjclibrary.org/localhistory ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow, what a shame. From the response the board member gave it sounds as if its too much bother! Maybe the member needs to be in another line of work! I hope this idea of charging doesn't spread. Many times the only clue is a stone in a cemetery and Find a Grave has been doing excellant work.
