    3. They were self rightous, thought they were doing what was required to make Indiana a better place to live. Most bigots are sure their opinion is the only correct one. After all if a woman has a child out of wedlock and you don't punish her she might do it again. People like Carrie Nation applauded them breaking up a bar or taking a horse whip to a drunk. People can always find justification for their actions. I worked with a man who thought what was wrong with our country was the banning of corporal punishment in schools. Between 1933 and 1941, many programs were enacted to help people overcome hardships created by the depression. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) were among two of the most prominent. Individuals were employed in a number of projects including, but not limited to: completion of indices for various county records, cleaned and repaired various public buildings; widened and straightened Blue River; worked on the streets; participated in a sewing project to benefit the Red Cross; conducted teaching programs; provided relief work; installed and repaired various sanitary and water systems; location of soldiers' burials; prepared written reports of historical events for county histories; and improved Salem's National Guard Army.

John Strain, Franklin's brother, married Eleanor "Nellie" McGarvin, a Catholic. Prior to her death in 1830, Eleanor indicated that she wanted to be buried in the with the McGarvins in the Catholic Cemetery rather than a Protestant Cemetery. Other members of the Strain family, as well as some of the Sheppards, who were neighbors to the Strains, are buried in the Strain Cemetery.

    1. Re: [IN-SOUTH-CENTRAL] More on Whitecapping
    2. M Nickless
    3. Here’s more on whitecapping, from Wikipedia: History The Whitecapping movement started in Indiana around 1873, as white males began forming secret societies in order to attempt to deliver justice independent from the state. These groups were known as the 'White Caps'. The first White Cap encounters were generally aimed at those who went against a community’s values. Men who neglected or abused their family, people who showed excessive laziness and women who had children out of wedlock are all prime examples of possible targets.[2] As whitecapping spread into the Southern states during the 1890s, the targets became drastically different. In the South, White Cap societies were generally made up of white dirt farmers that intended to control black laborers and prevent merchants from acquiring more land.[3] These societies in the South made it their task to attempt to force a person to abandon his home or property. This racial character of whitecapping in the South is thought to have been ignited by the agricultural depression that occurred around the same time. With all of the attention centered on producing cotton, the South’s economy became very unbalanced. Many farmers went into debt and lost their lands to merchants through mortgage foreclosures.[4] The merchants and their black laborers became quick targets for the dirt farmers who seemed to be losing everything. Racism contributed to the problem as well, prosperous black men in the South always faced resentment that could be expressed violently.[5] Methodology Despite the different whitecapping targets, the methods used by the White Caps remained somewhat constant. Generally, the members of this society were disguised in a way that somewhat resembled that of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), and always attacked at night. Physical attacks could include such things as whipping, drowning, firing shots into houses, arson and other brutalities.[6] The White Caps also used non-violent means of intimidation in order to get certain residents to abandon their homes. These include posting signs on doors of blacks' and merchants' homes, as well as cornering a target and verbally threatening them. The victims of these attacks had little support from the legal authorities until 1893, when the threat of whitecapping began to be taken more seriously. However, even when the courts got involved it took time to completely clear the jury of any White Cap members or sympathizers. Many White Cap societies had become dormant by 1894 and members were punished with fines. However, there were still active members of the White Caps who were found and punished in the early 1900s (decade).[7] Over many years, whitecapping not only affected individual people, but also the communities and counties as a whole. In the South, whitecapping discouraged many merchants and industrialists from doing business in the counties; it also threatened to drive away all of the black laborers.[8 From: Diane Jones Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2012 9:22 AM To: in-south-central@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IN-SOUTH-CENTRAL] Brown County: Robert Robinson Arrested fortheWhitecapping of Finley Stretchberry Anyone know what whitecapping is? It is thought they went to work about the time the last grand jury failed to return indictments against suspected men, and it is thought the detectives were employed by the state authorities. The work of the detectives has resulted in the arrest of Robert Robinson, a farmer near Belmont, who was captured by Constable J. W. Kennedy on a warrant charging him with helping to whitecap Finley Stretchberry some weeks ago. Robinson will have a preliminary hearing in Squire Mann's court at Nashville, June 17. He is under $100 bond for his appearance. Robinson was charged with taking a part in the whitecapping of Robert Palmer, a Baptist preacher, several months ago and, at his trial in the circuit court, was acquitted. It is thought that other arrests will follow. 3. I’d never heard of it either. Here’s what WikiPedia says about whitecapping: Whitecapping is a violent lawless movement among farmers that occurred specifically in America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was originally a ritualized form of enforcing community standards, appropriate behavior and traditional rights. However, as it spread throughout the poorest areas of the rural South it took on a distinct anti-black characteristic. GOLD DISCOVERED IN INDIANA-ACCORDING TO REPORT, THE ORE HAS BEEN FOUND IN PAYING QUANTITES Scottsburg, Indiana, December 18-It is thought that gold has been discovered in paying quantities on the farm of James C. Rickie who resides six miles west of this city. Last August, while a party of young men were making a geological survey through this part of the state, they reported that they had made discoveries of the precious ore, but nothing more was said or thought of this report until some three weeks ago when a party consisting of three young men from Chicago came to this place, since which time they have engaged in digging and analyzing the ore taken from the banks of the stream passing through the farm of Mr. Richie. The explorers believe that the mineral can be found in large quantities in this section of the country, and they feel greatly encouraged as the result of their investigations.

    3. Elkhart (IN) Daily Review, January 18, 1899, p. 4. TYLER MOB DEVELOPMENTS Wives of Suspects Give Little Information Useful to the Jury Scottsburg, Indiana, January 18-The Tyler lynching investigation was resumed by the grand jury. Nine witnesses were examined, nearly all being wives of suspected men, but their testimony failed to elcit information concerning the whereabouts of their husbands on the night of the lynching. Nearly all of the men under strong suspicion are related in some manner to Tyler's wife. Developments are said to indicate that Tyler was lynched, not so much because of his crime but to stop his making damaging disclosures against his wife and others. The authorities are now seeking Allen Cole, cellmate of Tyler, whose sentence expired the day after the lynching. He left the county after the lynching. He left the county immediately because of his recognition of some of the murderers. The coroner failed to take his evidence.
