Cleveland (OH) Leader, January 7, 1896, p. 1. BEGS TO BE KILLED A Jealous Man Murder His Wife and Then Shoots Himself at Little York, Indiana Scottsburg, Indiana, January 6-There was a terrible tragedy this morning at Little York eight miles west of here. Walter Coombs shot his wife through the bowels, she living but fifteen minutes. Combs then shot himself below the heart. He is still alive and begs for someone to kill him. The two children of the Coombses are absent at school. Mrs. Coombs was a highly respected woman and there was no cause save jealousy.
Elkhart (IN) Daily Review, January 18, 1899, p. 4. TYLER MOB DEVELOPMENTS Wives of Suspects Give Little Information Useful to the Jury Scottsburg, Indiana, January 18-The Tyler lynching investigation was resumed by the grand jury. Nine witnesses were examined, nearly all being wives of suspected men, but their testimony failed to elcit information concerning the whereabouts of their husbands on the night of the lynching. Nearly all of the men under strong suspicion are related in some manner to Tyler's wife. Developments are said to indicate that Tyler was lynched, not so much because of his crime but to stop his making damaging disclosures against his wife and others. The authorities are now seeking Allen Cole, cellmate of Tyler, whose sentence expired the day after the lynching. He left the county after the lynching. He left the county immediately because of his recognition of some of the murderers. The coroner failed to take his evidence.
Randi, You are doing a wonderful job. Keep it up. As someone who lives in Ohio and no longer able to research as much as I would like in Indiana, I really appreciate what you are doing. Even if I don't see pertinent family names, I get a favor of the lives of that time in Indiana. As someone who likes to know the background, not just the names and dates of family history, thank you. I even appreciated the white capping stories as a similar story touched my own family on both sides (victim and perpetrators) in Washington County, IN. -----Original Message----- From: in-south-central-request <in-south-central-request@rootsweb.com> To: in-south-central <in-south-central@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sat, May 19, 2012 3:00 am Subject: IN-SOUTH-CENTRAL Digest, Vol 1, Issue 98 Today's Topics: 1. Rev. F. A. Hutcherson Died Cincinnagi (OH) Daily Gazette, March 29, 1881, p. 3. Bedford, Indiana Rev. F. A. Hutcherson, a well known Methodist minister and a prominent Free Mason, died last Saturday in Owensburg. His remains were taken to New Albany for interment.
Cincinnati (OH) Daily Gazette, January 29, 1875, p. 1. THE MURDER AT BEDFORD, IND. [From the Louisville Courier-Journal] The escape up to this time of the two young desperadoes who murdered Deputy Marshal Carney, brother of Policeman Carney of the Louisville force, at Bedford, Indiana, last Tuesday night, week, is indeed most remarkable. Early the next morning after the bloody deed had been committed, those who did it were known, and a large reward was immediately offered for their capture. In less than an hour, from fifty to a hundred men were in hot pursuit, and the country was scoured for miles around, but no clue was obtained of the murderers. The news, of course, spread like wild fire, and the horrible details of the murder were known far and near before noon the next day, and large numbers of men went out in search of the two mere boys who had at so early an age stained their hands in the blood of a good citizen. It has been now ten days since the murder was committed, and yet the two boys have not been caught. They have been heard from once or twice-that is, it is so reported; but they are still at large. That these two boys should for so long a time baffle the skill of shrewd detectives and escape arrest is a wonder to all who have given the matter any thought. Where they went and where they are is a matter of much speculation in this section. Some say that they are hid bear Bedford; others that they have made their way out into Illinois, while many assert that they have crossed the river and come to Louisville where, it is stated, they have relations living. It is to be hoped that they will yet be caught and brought to punishment.
Smithville News, Monroe County, Indiana, January 8, 1909, p. 1. NOTE: A book containing scanned copies of extant newspapers published from Smithville, Indiana, is available at the Monroe County Public Library in Bloomington, Indiana. Lawrence County has gone dry by 1508 majority. When Bedford, Oolitic and Mitchell are actually dry, they will begin holding religious revivals in Hades.
