    3. The June 2012 issue of the INDIANA GENEALOGIST includes an index to the Brown County Probate Order Book, 1837-1850, the county's earliest probate order book. It was compiled from microfilmed records recently made available by the Brown County's Clerk's Office. There are about 180 names in the index. Copies of the article are available with individual or library memberships to the Indiana Genealogical Society. If your library is not a subscriber, check with nearby libraries or become a member yourself. Membership information is available at http://www.indgensoc.org/membership.php. Anyone can view the records in their entirety at the Clerk's Office in Nashville. Additionally, copies of the records can be ordered at a cost of $1.00/page. DANGEROUS TO TACKLE Destiny Plays Some Strange Tricks with Ovid White's Case Jeffersonville, Indiana, July 5-The case of Ovid White of Salem for the murder of Jacob Johnson proves to have a strange fatality attached to it. First White managed to evade justice for seven years and was only recaptured through being overheard in Minneloa, Texas, relating his crime to another man. Next Gov. Hovey's private secretary, Roberts, got into trouble by enacting the role of murder catcher. White was brought to trial, and the judge became insane and died. Last week his trial began at Paoli, but no sooner began than Judge Pearson took ill and the death of Judge Pearson has been announced.

    3. Cincinnati (OH) Daily Enquirer, August 21, 1870, p. 5. NEW ALBANY, INDIANA [Special Dispatch to the Enquirer] New Albany, Indiana, August 20, 1870. A horrible, cold-blooded murder was committed at Newton Stewart, Orange County, on Thursday evening. William Watkins carried away a shirt belonging to his employer, James W. Foster, a well known and esteemed citizen. When asked by Foster when he would bring it back, Watkins became furious, seized an axe and cut Foster on the shoulder nearly severing his arm from his body, repeated his blows and striking nearly in the place. When Foster turned round, Watkins dealt his victim a blow in the left side under his shoulder, severing his heart in twain, and killing him instantly. Watkins was arrested and taken to Paoli to jail. The horrible deed cause intense excitement. The last accounts say Judge Lynch will probably try the case.

    3. Indianapolis (IN) Sentinel, July 26, 1882, p. 4. LYNCHING AT PAOLI New Albany, July 25-News has been received of the lynching of a man named Bundy near Paoli. The story is that on the 15th of July a man named Archer was murdered by a man named Manley who lived with Bundy. Manley escaped, and Bundy's crime was aiding his escape. He was hanged at night, and his body thrown into Lost River.

CIRCUS VEET STAYS WITH BIG TOP LIFE Jerry Mugivan Sells Interests to Ringling for Several Million Peru, Ind., Oct. 19-Jerry Mugivan, who started with nothing and 36 years later sold his interest in the American Circus corporation to John Ringling for a sum said to be millions, is going to stick to the life of the big tops-and Peru is happy. Mugivan, who lives in this circus city, says he and his partner, Bert Bowers, are not ready to give up the glamorous life despite the fact that they do not own any circus. In the 25 years they have been together, they have bought and sold a dozen circuses. Mugivan got into circus life selling peanuts. In 1893 he had advanced to a ticket seller's window. In 1904, with Bowers, he organized (on a shoe string, he says) the "Great Van Amber Show" at Kansas City, Howes Great London Show, the Dode Fish Show, the Danny Robinson Famous Shows, John Robinson's circus and the Hagenback and Wallace circus in order, passed into their hands. The American Circus Corporation was formed in 1921 with Ed Ballard of West Baden, Ind.; Zack Terrell of Owensboro, Ky., and C. D. Odom of Birmingham, Ala., as other incorporators. ____________________________________________________________________________ ________

    3. Cincinnati (OH) Daily Gazette, January 29, 1879, p. 7. Bedford, Indiana George Sheeks, formerly a citizen and at one time treasurer of this county, committed suicide this morning by jumping off White River bridge at Shoals, Indiana. Financial troubles the supposed cause.

    3. Colorado Springs (CO) Gazette, November 4, 1913, p. 3. KILLS HIS WIFE AND THEN COMMITS SUICIDE Kansas City, Nov. 3-Edward Ikerd, a railroad fireman formerly of Bedford, Indiana, shot and killed his wife and himself in city park today. They had been separated. Ikerd called today at the home of his wife's mother where Mrs. Ikerd and their year-old daughter were staying. Ikerd asked his wife to take a walk to the park. A note asking that Ikerd's aunt, "Mrs. Sitler of Bedford, Ind." be notified was found in the dead man's pocket.

FOOTBALL VICTIMS THIRTEEN Record of Fatalities during Season Just Closed Nearly 300 Hurt Chicago, Nov. 26-Thirteen deaths have resulted fro football this season. The casualty list is the same as last year, but the number of serious injuries during the season just closed will exceed that of any year since the introduction of the modern college sport. The list of dead follows. Ralph Mathews, aged 17, died October 16, at Bedford, Indiana, from injuries received in game few days previous.

    3. Canton (OH) Evening Repository, August 19, 1908, p. 6. AN INDIANA DEATH PUZZLES OFFICERS Bedford, Indiana, August 19-The shooting to death of Miss Della Henderson, nineteen years old, while her sweetheart was calling on her, presents a mystery that the local police have not solved. The bullet entered the girl's head and came from the mouth. The young man says he left Miss Henderson in the room a few moments while he stepped out to get a bucket of water. He says he heard a shot and running back found the girl lying on the floor with the revolver in her hand and the wound in her head. The tragedy is believed to be the result of a quarrel, and so far as known the young man was the only person near her when the shot was fired.

    3. Saginaw (MICH) News, July 1, 1893, p. 2. MISS BARTON IN INDIANA Miss Clara Barton, president of the Society of the Red Cross, is spending a few days at Bedford, Indiana. Miss Barton's unselfish life, devoted to the relief of suffering humanity, entitles her to the reverence of the world. She has probably received more decorations and orders of merit than any living woman. She comes to Bedford to arrange for the acceptance of the large and valuable tract of land donated to the Red Cross society by Dr. Gardner, upon which it is the intention to establish a home to be controlled by Miss Barton for the society-Bedford (IND) Letter.

WRITES HER NAME ON EGG Now the Fair Farmer Girl is the Bride of Indiana Man Bedford, Indiana, July 29-A romance of an egg that led to a happy wedding has just become public. Miss Daisy Talbott, who lived near Bono, a fair farmer girl, wrote her name and address on an egg that was sold to a huckster. The latter shipped it, and it fell into the hands of Joseph Palmer of Decatur, Indiana, who wrote to Miss Talbott, and she answered. Letters wee exchanged often, and in the course of time a proposal of marriage was accepted by the young woman which resulted recently in a wedding. The bridegroom is a well known young man of Decatur and Miss Talbott is one of Lawrence County's most estimable young women.
