BURNED TO DEATH Little Evart Ray Griffin Meets a Horrible Death His Grandfather Badly Burned Evart Ray Griffin, the 3-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Griffin who live four miles south of town, met with a horrible death last Saturday. The child's parents were in town shopping and his grandmother, Mrs. Hoggatt, was left in charge of the house. In the afternoon, Evart was playing in the house and his clothes, by some means, caught fire. Before his grandmother could remove the burning garments, the child was so badly burned that death relieved him of his sufferings a few hours afterwards. While attending to the boy, Mrs. Hoggatt was burned about the arms, hands and wrists and will be crippled for life. The family of (several illegible words) has the sympathy of the entire community.

IN MEMORY Mrs. Charles Peden, daughter of Elisa (sic) and Sarah (Pitts) Davis, was born September 4, 1837, married September (one line totally illegible) visit her brother, A. J. Davis, in Benedict, Kansas. She became a member of the M. E. Church in her younger days and endeavored to live a Christian life ever letting her light shine, thus leading others to the rock that is higher than we. Always ready with her hands to help those in need and to give words of comfort to those who were in sorrow and distress. But she has gone and the place that once knew her well knows her no more forever. The summoning angel has called her to join her loved ones gone on before and there to await the call of a husband, three sons and one daughter and when time is declared to be no more will join the innumerable host at God's right hand in heaven to dwell throughout a never ending eternity. Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord.

BANK CLOSED [Special Dispatch to the Cincinnati Gazette] Salem, Indiana, July 9-The First National Bank of this town has closed its business here and will go into liquidation. Some twelve or fourteen months ago the cashier of this bank, James N. Baynes, defaulted for $30,000 and ran away. The loss was made good by his father-in-law, but the bank has not paid since as a business investment.

THE LARGEST OAK BOARD The largest oak board ever sawed was ripped from the body of a mammoth tree that formerly stood near Scottsburg, Indiana. The tree was 27 feet in circumference and was said to be the largest perfectly round oak in the state. It was purchased by H. Hermann, the New York lumber dealer, for the sum of $75, and was cut down and sawed into boards. The largest of these boards was 10 inches thick, 5’ x 2.5” wide at the butt and 5 feet exactly at the top. It was 35 feet long and required the combined strength of two yoke of oxen and eight horses a whole day to move it ½ miles on a “broad tread” wagon from the saw mill to the depot. Lumber men say that this was the largest oak board ever sawed in American—St. Louis Republic.

CIDER CAUSES QUARREL Indiana May Dying and Several Hurt in Free-for-all Fight at Church Festival Scottsburg, Indiana, July 18-The introduction of hard cider at a church festival held at Greenbriar church near here Saturday night caused a riot. As a result, Grover Gardner is lying at his home in a dangerous condition, he having been stabbed a dozen times by several other men who participated in the free-for-all fight. Gardner and a boy names James started the trouble, and several other young men rushed in to stop the fight. Instead of stopping it, they took sides in the battle and several youngsters are wearing bandages as the result.

RUNNING FIGHT WITH THUGS In Which Two of Them Are Captured after Being Wounded by a Pursuing Marshal Scottsburg, Indiana, July 28-The safe in the store of Shilding & Blackford at New Washington was blown open and $400 taken. Three men on bicycles were suspected. Armed officers started after them, and surrounding towns were telephoned. Scottsburg officials learned that three men on bicycles were seen north of this place. The marshal and three deputies started after the men. When they came in sight of the men, the latter abandoned their bicycles and took to the woods. There was a running fight, and the marshal brought two of them down with a shotgun. The third escaped but is still being hunted. The men were locked up here and gave their names as William Elmer and John Bailey. Neither is fatally hurt.

ORA ALLEN, 85, EXPIRES SUNDAY Mrs. Ora Allen, 85, died Sunday evening at the Keller Nursing Home in Bedford. Mrs. Allen, whose home was on Route 3, Paoli, was transferred to the nursing home two weeks ago from Orange County Hospital. Final rites will be held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock in the Tunnelton Methodist Church with services conducted by Rev. Angus Jeffers of Paoli. Ritter funeral directors are in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Tunnelton Cemetery. Mrs. Allen is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Blanche Kirby, Route 3, Paoli, two grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Stella Beasley of Bedford.

ALLEGRE SERVICES HELD MONDAY Funeral services were held Monday for Mrs. Estelle Allegre, 83, former Orleans resident. Rites were from Ochs Funeral Home with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Allegre, who resided in Mitchell, died Friday night at the Gorge Nursing Home in French Lick where she had been a patient for a month. She was the former Estelle Moody, born March 7, 1883, in Orange County, a daughter of John and Margaret Ann Teagarden Moody. In 1904 she was married to Fred Allegre who preceded her in death in 1953. She was a member of Mt. Horeb Baptist church. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Bryant, Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Emma Payton, Orleans, Mrs. Lois Daugherty, Mitchell, and Mrs. Crystal Moore, Frankfort; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Maloney and Miss Blanche Moody, Lafayette, and Mrs. Bill Jackson, Detroit, Mich.; a brother, Earl Moody, Bloomington, 21 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

    3. Paoli (Orange County, Indiana) Republican, November 1, 1966. JAMES ALEXANDER RETURNED FOR BURIAL Graveside rites were held Monday for James Alexander, 54, former Paolian. Services were Monday at DeBaun Funeral Home in Terre Haute, and the body brought here for burial. Rev. Richard Cillum conducted rites in Community Cemetery. Mr. Alexander died Saturday in a Terre Haute hospital following a long illness. He was a son of the late Walter Alexander and grandson of John Alexander. Surviving are his wife, his mother, Mrs. Grace Alexander of Terre Haute, a sister, Mrs. Joe Sparks of Ft. Wayne.
