    1. [IN-SOUTH-CENTRAL] Lawrence County: George Canner Died: Settlement of Estate
    2. Randi Richardson via
    3. Bedford (IN) Daily Mail, November 15, 1901, p. 1. ESTATE OF GEORGE CANNER George Canner, the old soldier who died here last Monday, is thought to have a half-brother in this country somewhere. In thinking over the matter, it occurs to me that there is a John Canner living west of Bedford a few miles who may be the brother in question. George Caner was a German, 64 years of age, a Civil War veteran, and leaves an estate worth from $2,000 to $4,000 including a farm of 177 acres of land. Canner was getting a pension of $24 a month and has a bank account of several hundred dollars. The John Canner living near Bedford is a German, also, and may be the relative in question. John Allman has charge of Canner's land. He says Canner has often spoken of having a half-brother, but no other relatives in this country. His half-brother, if he can be found, will probably fall heir to the estate. George Canner had no family, was never married and dropped dead suddenly of heart failure last Monday. He had walked five miles to hits place to have his pension voucher filled out.

    1. [IN-SOUTH-CENTRAL] Lawrence County: John Short's Stable and H. H. Roseman's Stable Destroyed by Fire
    2. Randi Richardson via
    3. Bedford (IN) Daily Mail, November 15, 1901, p. 2. DANGEROUS FIRE Several Stables in West Bedford Burned Wednesday Afternoon Children playing with matches started a fire in Bart Short's barn on West 17th Street between P and Q Wednesday PM about 2 o'clock. This stable, the stable of John Short, and the stable at the H. H. Roseman property occupied by Andy Lantz, were totally destroyed together with other outbuildings. Bart Short had his barn full of oats, and John Short had a lot of hay. The stables at J. A. Zaring's and W. G. Sproull's on the north wide of the alley were badly scorched. There is insurance on several of the stables and barns. The loss on all with contents may amount to $1,200. A strong gale from the northwest was blowing, sending a cloud of smoke and sparks in a southeasterly direction endangering all property for several blocks, shingle roofs being dry as tinder. The home of Marion Taylor, two blocks distant, caught in the comb of the roof, and all the household goods were carried out, but by pulling off shingles and pouring on water with buckets, the blaze was put out without much damage. Afterward, a blaze was discovered on the roof of Judge Crookes' home, one on Al Lucas's woodshed and one on the summer kitchen at Jesse C. Mitchell's. The latter being three full blocks from the burning stables. All were promptly extinguished. The fire department had all its available hose out, several streams being at work, but found it hard to subdue the fire at once owing to the strong wind and the abundance of combustible material. Only their promptness prevented the destruction of several residences.

    1. [IN-SOUTH-CENTRAL] Brown and Jackson County: Oliver Snyder Seriously Injured in Attempted Burglary
    2. Randi Richardson via
    3. Indianapolis (IN) Star, August 22, 1912, p. 4. SENT TO CELL TO AVOID LYNCHING Suffering from Gunshot Wound, Burglar is Hastened to Jeffersonville Prison Seymour, Ind., August 21-Suffering from a gunshot wound inflicted by Chief of Police J. T. Abell, and fearful for his life, not only from the effects of the wound and the subsequent amputation of his leg but also that angry citizens might break into the hospital where he was under guard and take summary vengeance, Oliver Sndyer, accused of burglary and of an attack on a woman, was taken to the reformatory at Jeffersonville this afternoon. The events leading up to his sudden trip were dramatic. Shortly before last midnight, he began a series of burglaries following a plan that he had carried out before when committing crimes. After robbing a house he would break into an adjoining residence and bide while the police searched for him, then rob that house and enter another. Seen leaving a house at one o'clock, a policeman shot at him, the bullet grazing his shoulder. This did not deter him; four more houses were robbed. Later a squad of police sighted him and gave chase. A bullet from the chief's revolver went through his right thigh and he was captured. At the hospital it was found necessary to amputate the right leg, and even then the physician said he was not out of danger. Later in the morning it developed that when he entered the home of George Lockmund he found Mrs. Lockmund alone, her husband being at his duties as a night man in the railroad yards. After robbing the house, he attacked Mrs. Lockmund and so frightened her with threats that she was afraid to say anything until she heard he was under arrest. When news of this attack became circulated, the people became excited and the mayor wired Gov. Marshall of the situation. The result was an order to remove him at once to Jeffersonville and this was done, the trip being made by traction line on a car that was stopped outside the city limits. HAS A CRIMINAL RECORD-Snyder left home in Brown County yesterday with a load of apples that he sold in Columbus and came to this place. His father is a minister. He has taught several terms of school in Brown County. Some years ago he was arrested at Scottsburg following a series of robberies, convicted and sentenced to a term in Jeffersonville. This tem he served, being released from prison June 20. At the time of his arrest in Scottsburg, his trial was one of the speediest on record. He was arrested at seven o'clock, pronounced guilty at ten, and before noon had begun serving time.
