COLORED MAN SHOOTS ANOTHER Robert Fairchild, 35, colored, formerly of this city, is in the Lawrence County jail to answer to a charge of shooting with intent to kill or murder. Last Sunday he shot and probably fatally injured R. D. Crunes, 21, also colored, at Mitchell. Family differences caused the trouble.

MURDER AT SALEM, INDIANA-TIME MURDERER THREATENED WITH LYNCH LAW Louisville, Ky., Monday, April 13-At Salem, Indiana, on Saturday night, a ruffian named Henry Clark shot and fatally wounded George Tell, an old and highly respectable citizen. Clark also shot a young man named Buena Vista Dunbram. Clark has been arrested and put in jail. Great fears are entertained that he will be taken out and hanged, such is the exasperation of the people.

    3. Cincinnati (OH) Daily Press, December 19, 1859, p. 1. A Clerical Villain-Rev. Dr. William M. Finley, formerly of Grayville, Ill., was arrested at Salem, Ind., on Thursday last, charged with preforming an abortion on the person of a girl named Mary Linley (consider Lindley a spelling variant), in Grayville recently. He was arrested on the affidavit of his victim, but while on his way to Carmi, in charge of the coroner of White County, managed to escape. A reward of $100 is offered for his apprehension.

    3. Middlebury (VT) Register, April 22, 1887, p. 4. J. W. Middleton with his two sons went to the woods to fell some trees near Austin, Ind., Friday. They selected a very large tree and began chopping until it began to totter, when the word was given to run. The two boys retired, and when they had reached a place of safety they turned to look and saw their father with folded arms standing directly under the falling tree. The young men were so frightened that they left the woods in great haste and gave the alarm. The log was rolled away but only a pile of blood-bespattered clothes, flesh and bones was found. Mr. Middleton was a deacon in the Methodist Church.

SIX KILLED BY TRAIN Accident at Austin, Ind., Was Fatal to Members of a Kentucky Family Louisville, Ky., Sept. 14-Four persons were killed outright and two others died from their injuries within a few hours when a Pennsylvania passenger train hit an automobile at a railroad crossing in Austin, Ind., Thursday. Those instantly killed were: Ellsworth Belch, Dayton, Ky.; Mrs. Ellsworth Belch, Dayton, Ky.; Miss Amelia Belch, 20-year-old daughter of Ellsworth Belch, Dayton Ky.; Mrs. Mary Belch, sixty years old, Austin, Ind., relative of Ellworth Belch. The following received injuries from which they died while being taken on a special train to the hospital at Seymour, Ind.: Beulah Robbins, fourteen years old, an orphan child, Austin, Ind.; Leona Trulock, twelve years old, Austin, Ind., daughter of Marshall Trulock. The auto was in charge of Mr. Ellsworth Belch who had left his home in Dayton, Ky., a few days ago to visit relatives in Austin. He was at the wheel and was taking the party for a drive. As the car was crossing the railroad tracks, the engine stopped and, before the passengers could get out, the train struck the motor car crushing it to splinters and scattering the occupants in every direction. The engineer of the train, seeing the car stalled on the track, made every effort to stop the train but without avail. Witnesses of the accident say that Mr. Ellsworth's view of the track was obscured by a cutoff freight cars and that he could not see the approaching train.

NOTE: In another account of this murder published in another paper and sent previously to the IN-South-Central Rootsweb list, Fitzsimmons was referred to as Simmons and Joseph M. Harrods as Marsh Harrod. It is know which of the spellings, if either, is correct. KILLED BY A SUSPECTED VIGILANTE Scottsburg, Ind., April 6-James Fitzsimmons was yesterday shot twice and killed by Joseph M. Harrod at Austin, this county, on account of an old feud that grew out of the deceased and others being whipped by vigilantes last winter. Harrod was suspected of being the leader of the vigilantes and was threatened with an attack by Fitzsimmons, with the above. An inquest was held eliciting the above facts. Harrod remarked that he was sorry he had killed him and rode away. No arrest.

Ritter of Orleans, was united in marriage last Monday at Orleans to Mr. Thomas J. Cox of Kokomo. The marriage is said to be the result of an acquaintance begun a few years ago when Miss Ritter was engaged in teaching in the Kokomo schools and the groom is said to be a very pleasant gentleman. He is engaged in the railway mail service. The bride is a very charming young lady possessing many accomplishments and (several illegible words) very successful teacher for some years. The happy couple will make their home in Chicago. The Republican joins their many friends in wishing them happiness and prosperity.

FOUND GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER Bedford, Ind., November 28-After being out for an hour, the jury in the Jud (consider Judd a spelling variant) Thompson murder case returned a verdict of guilty of manslaughter, sentencing Thompson to five years' imprisonment. The case came here from Orange County. On a former trial in this city, the jury failed to agree, eight standing for conviction and four for acquittal. Thompson was indicted for killing George Leonard at West Baden Springs in July 1894. The defendant claimed that the shooting was done in self-defense.
