    1. [IN-SOUTH-CENTRAL] Jackson County: Frank Coryell Testifies at His Trial
    2. Randi Richardson via
    3. Seymour (IN) Daily Democrat, January 20, 1898, p. 3. EVIDENCE ALL INN Frank Coryell's Fate Will Soon Be Decided By a Jury of His Peers In the case of the State vs. Frank Coryell, trial of which is in progress at Columbus, the entire time was occupied yesterday in hearing the evidence [of] Coryell [who] was placed on the witness stand to testify on his own behalf. On cross examination he said: First met Mrs. Banks [the] 15th to 20th of May, stopped to get a drink and met her, talked a while, and when I left she invited me back. This was our first meeting and led to what followed. I went often and generally spent every Sunday night there. I was courting her. We talked about getting married but was not engaged. We both thought she could get a divorce. When I left Monday night, before [the] shooting, I promised to go back Friday night, and I did. Live three miles from Langdons. Walked to Dudleytown, eight miles, that day, got pint of whisky, left at two o'clock and walked home; got supper, got gun, then started for Banks. Spall drank half the whisky. Here witness took gun and showed how the shooting occurred. I first held the door in a playful manner as she pulled it, and when it opened I slipped and fell. Up to this time I had not seen Mrs. Banks and did not know where she was standing. Gun in my hand when discharged, just as I fell. She said twice I did it purposely, but I told her I did not. She asked me to get her some water, and no one but me got her any water. I playfully slapped her once; this is the only threat I ever made of her. I was going to work till Monday or Tuesday, then try to kill her some squirrels. Was going to stay a week. Have brother at home, not married now. Redirect-Once at Mrs. Banks and one night in June, she had a revolver and shot it four or five times then gave it to me to fix as it would not revolve, and just as I took it, it went off and shot the ceiling. Defense rested at 3:45 and state began its rebuttal. Henry Wagner-Met Louis Richardson Sunday after shooting at Farmington, and he said Coryell had said to him in substance, though not in these exact words, that he would kill Mrs. Banks. I have nothing against Coryell. Here the announcement was made by both sides that the case was closed at four o'clock. Judge Hord then adjourned court to meet at nine o'clock this morning, giving the entire day over to the lawyers for argument. Prosecutors Honan and Shea will speak for the state and Kochenour and Lewis for the defense. The jury will get the case sometimes this afternoon.

    3. Bloomington (IN) Newsletter, April 7, 1855, p. 2. NOTE: The item below was abbreviated from the original as noted by the ellipsis. MEETING OF THE RAILROAD EMPLOYEES Resolutions passed in the meeting held at the court house of New Albany, March 28, 29 and 30 by the mechanics employed by the New Albany and Salem Railroad Company in the City of New Albany. Whereas we have not been regularly paid since the month of September 1854, and when we received any pay at all, we received it in small sums and frequently in state stock money upon which we were subject to be shaved from five to twenty-five cents on the dollars, and whereas we have been so contented until it was suggested by the superintendent of the machine shop of said road at the City of New Albany that he had received instructions from the president of the road, Mr. Brooks, to make it known that the company will not be able to pay us hereafter except with due bills payable in three and six months after date with interest. In consequence of which a meeting was called to make some arrangements, if possible, with the company to pay us what is due to us at the present time. Therefore, it was resolved that none of us will strike another blow for the New Albany and Salem Railroad Company until we have received all the moneys due to us from said railroad company.

    2. Randi Richardson via
    3. Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Newsletter, May 12, 1855, p. 2. EXPLOSION OF A LOCOMOTIVE-TWO MEN KILLED AND ONE WOUNDED About five o'clock last evening the engine of a down freight train on the Jeffersonville Railroad exploded about two miles this side of Henryville, seventeen miles from Jeffersonville. The engineer, Mr. Harrison, and a fireman whose name we did not learn, were killed. The body of Mr. H. was found about 150 yards from the scene of the disaster, and it was supposed that it had been blown entirely over the tops of the trees! The only remains of clothing on him were a portion of the shirt collar, a portion of one boot, and a strip of one of the legs of his pantaloons. The body was as limber as a rag, the bones being apparently mashed to a jelly. The name of the person who was wounded we could not ascertain. His leg was broken. He was a passenger. These three were the only persons on the train. The cause of the explosion is unknown and probably will never be ascertained as the only persons who could give any information on the subject are dead. Portions of the locomotive were found distant a 150 yards from the scene of the accident, and the track of the road was torn up for some distance. We gather these particulars from a gentleman who came passenger from Indianapolis in last evening's train. Upon reaching the scene of this terrible explosion, the train was unable to proceed further on account of the obstructions. The passengers, therefore, had to remain there all night and did not reach Jeffersonville till this morning. -N. A. Ledger of yesterday
