Chuck-- I just received an e-mail from Connie Shotts. Apparently things are not as good as I thought. Although I am now able to share info with Rootsweb, she tells me that items shared with Rootsweb since about April of this year cannot be found in an archives search. I'm going to try and dig a little deeper and determine if the problem can be resolved and, if so, when. So hold off on the good news until we know more. Until I know for sure that items sent to the INMONROE are going to Archives and Archives will be fixed, I may limited the number of items sent to the list. Reed was about 25 years of age and carried a card that showed that he was a printer and had been a member of the typographical union at Memphis, Tenn. His home seems to have been at Owensboro, Ky. A telegram was sent to the union and a reply received that Reed was not in good standing and that his body would not be taken care of by the union. It was buried at Beech Grove this afternoon by Benzel & Hamer. Reed had a hole in the back of his head, left upper arm broken, chest badly crushed, one leg broken twice and the other once, big toe cut off left foot and back much bruised. George J. Buhner was about 26 years of age and had lived in Bedford four years. He was from Seymour and was a son of County Commissioner Buhner of that city. He married a daughter of John W. Owens over a year ago and separated from her some three months past. He was beating his way to Bloomington where he hoped to get work. Buhner's hand was mashed to a thickness of about one inch, his neck was broken, his left arm broken and there were cuts and bruises on his back. The body was taken to Seymour for burial. Trouble about a certain young man caused Miss Laura Reget and Miss Fannie Mathey to engage in a rough-an-tumble fight in front of the Catholic Church at Frenchtown near Corydon, Ind. They had been attending church service but after the fight their apparel was much demoralized.

Yale, Expositor, St. Clair County, Michigan, August 16, 1895, p. 3. Quite a sensation has been created at Corydon, Ind., by the sudden and unexpected departure of Dr. Newman, a leading specialist of New York. Dr. Newman located in Corydon four or five years ago and in a short time built up a large practice. This is said to have excited the envy and malice of some of the practitioners and also of two young lawyers of the town who are supposed to be members of the whitecap organization. Harrison County has the reputation of being the birthplace and hotbed of whitecaps and the doctor's enemies conceived the idea of resorting to their never failing methods to get rid of him. Accordingly, a secret meeting was held in a weird hollow near Corydon and the result was that the doctor received a notice in regular whitecap form informing him that he must leave Harrison County or suffer the penalty, and being a stranger in the town and knowing something of the acts of Harrison County whitecaps on former occasions, he no doubt deemed it expedient to leave Corydon forthwith.

Owosso (MICH) Times, October 12, 1894, p. 3. The Rev. John Welker was knocked down and killed near Corydon, Ind., by David Wheat. The latter had received a note warning him to leave the country on peril of being "whitecapped" which Welker undertook to secure. A quarrel followed during which Wheat struck the minister with a billet of wood.

A lengthy, well-documented article titled "A Bucolic Paradise," by Norman Ferris about the family of Isaac Clinton Ferris (1819-1901) was published in the Fall/Winter 2014 issue of Connections: The Hoosier Genealogist. It was accompanied by six pictures and has been summarized below. (See pp. 42-52.) Isaac Clinton Ferris was the born to Isaac and Elcy (Thornell Ferris. He grew up near Cincinnati, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Parmenter (1819-1860) and they had four children: Anna, John, James Wesley and Bell. After the death of his first wife, he married Catherine Elizabeth "Kate" Holliday. Not long afterward the family settled in the area of Chestnut Ridge south of Seymour in Jackson County. Isaac was a horticulturist and travelled to sell his products. By 1867 he had begun to play a prominent role in annual meetings of the Indiana State Horticultural Society. He invested his savings and borrowed money to plant his farm with thousands of trees including fruit, nut and evergreen. The year that Isaac's peach crop failed he was also forced to pay off the debt of a man for whom he has endorsed a note. This caused him to lose his home in a foreclosure and in 1880 the family located in Alabama. After Kate died in 1882, Isaac moved to Hill City, Tennessee to live with his widowed eldest daughter. He died in 1901.

Indiana State Sentinel, February 28, 1877. Over 2,000 tombstones to be placed over the graves of the federal soldiers in the National Cemetery in New Albany have been received at the government depot at Jeffersonville. The work of placing them in the cemetery will be commenced next week.

Terre Haute (IN) Daily Gazette, October 4, 1870. New Albany has a population of 15,205. Terre Haute a population of 16,206. New Albany claims to be the largest city in the state except Indianapolis, and the Ledger of that city is mad because the census takers did not count the population of Jeffersonville and Portland and set the result over to the credit of New Albany.
