William "Quinn" Anderson was born in Ohio in 1884 he married in Goshen, Elkhart County IN in May 1910. I can't find him there in 1910 even though his marriage application says he lived there. He was employed as a railroad conductor. Family history is that he was killed in a RR accident. His wife remarries in 1923. Her name was Augusta Elizabeth Pence Anderson. Can someone point me in the direction as to where to find his death? Thanks Lindsey
I know very little about this man, Nelson Armstrong IRVINE, and hope someone knows more. He was from Hogestown, Cumberland County, PA. In addition, he attended the Union Seminary, New Berlin, Union County, PA around 1880. It was there that he was in the Commercial Class and studied music. At some point he moved to Cass County, IN, and he was a timekeeper for the RR. They also lived in Indianapolis. His wife was Lulu E. (last name unknown). They had one son, William Clemens IRVINE. Did they have other children? Nelson was born in 1860 Lulu in 1864 William in 1894 Thanks, Sid

Is it stricklyWrecks or wagons, cars and such, I have several? I have the account from the newspaper of his death. Every bone in his body was broken but oddly enough he had his glasses and comb and 57 cents still in his pockets unbroken. Oct. 30 1914 Bedford, IN George Riley Clendenin was a dapper small framed redheaded Irishman, who played the fife and loved to dance. The last night of his life he was happily playing his fife with others of a small band of musicians who were part of a political rally around the square in Bedford. Later that night as he was walking down the railroad tracks toward home and a bit full of the drink, he was killed by the Monon train. This was a normal walking route for the towns people. To Whom It Concerns: I certainly appreciate the work and time involved in gathering, organizing and e-mail the names, time and places of the train accidents. Unfortunately , none of the names involved are any of the names I'm searching for. I'm looking for Michael Lyons, worked for the "Big Four" out of Anderson,IN., from 1865? to 1890?. Joseph Helpling, who possibly was a train engineer out of Niles, Mi., Anderson and Elwood, IN from 1890 to 1920? and Harrison Mason who worked for a private railroad in In between Chicago and Elkhart or Gary and Elkhart, IN. for a few yrs 1910 to 1915? Please keep me on your e-mail list. Your information is fascinating. I am looking for more information on John Davis, born 10 Jan 1887. According to the 1910 IN census he was already working for the RR. His WWI Registration Card states he was employed by the RR on New Jersey Street in Indianapolis. I can't make out the name of the RR Company. Does anyone know the RR company or companies that were in Indianapolis at that time or were I could find this information? My grandmother BAILEY and her children rode the train from Roselawn, Indiana to many parts of the midwest, including Iowa and Minnesota, I am writing a book about her and would like to find a photo of a train esp. a locomotive for that era . I have a picture of the Thayer depot, but no train. I think that was the Monon line at the time. Thanks for any help. Eleanor Bailey

Hello, I am in search of my GG Grandfather, Captain Edward Smith. The problem is, I do not know what job or service he was in to earn the title Captain. I would appreciate knowing if Railroad personnel were given the rank/title of Captain. If so, here is all I know about him. He married Bridget Breen (born Ireland 1860). Where and when they married, I don't know. I have a copy of their daughter's (Anna Francis Smith) baptismal certificate which is from St. John's Church in Indianapolis. It was dated June 24, 1883. They had a son in 1885. According to Bridget's obit, (1931) Edward died in 1884/5. She went on to marry John Kelly. So, I deduce that they were living in Inpls. at the time of his death, and am hoping your records would show something to help me. My next thought is a ship's Captain. Any ideas on how I could inquire into those records? Thank You, Cece
========================================= Meredith Thompson mere@augustmoondesign.com alternate e-mail: mere_thom@runbox.com Indiana Genealogical Society Newsletter editor & website manager http://www.indgensoc.org ========================================= Midwestern Roots 2005: Family History and Genealogy Conference Indianapolis - Some of the nation's leading genealogy professionals will present at Midwestern Roots 2005: Family History and Genealogy Conference, August 18-20 in Indianapolis. Midwestern Roots, co-sponsored by the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Genealogical Society, will feature over 30 presentations covering topics ranging from finding female ancestors, census substitutes, family food traditions and German SS records to baptismal records, preserving family papers, genetics and more. Optional pre-conference activities on Thursday, August 18, range from tours of the William Henry Smith Memorial Library, the Indiana State Library and the Indiana State Archives to writing workshops on preparing family histories for publication, computer labs on genealogy resources available on the internet and a workshop designed for library staff and volunteers who answer questions from genealogy patrons. The Genealogy Division of the Indiana State Library and the Indiana History Center Smith Library also will stay open late for extended research hours. Other activities include a lively panel discussion bringing together genealogists and historians to answer the question, "History and Genealogy: Why Not Both?" The evening will begin with a dessert reception at the Indiana History Center followed by a discussion with nationally-renowned historical genealogists Elizabeth Shown Mills and Curt B. Witcher, Indiana historian James H. Madison and migration historian Marianne S. Wokeck, who will explore how these fields can enrich each other, from uncovering the slightest detail of one life to seeing human history more clearly because of that life. On Friday, August 19, the conference will begin with the opening session by Mills. Mills will explain the standards and processes all researchers need to apply when using family history and genealogical sources. Friday will conclude with a banquet and Mills will give a presentation that encourages taking what is learned about ancestors and conveying it to descendants. On Saturday morning, Madison will begin the day by considering the various migration streams that settled the Midwest and show how their origins, timing and cultural features helped make the region a distinctive part of the nation. Other notable national speakers include genealogists John S. Humphrey, Diane Gagel, Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens, Tony Burroughs and Kandie Adkinson. The Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Genealogical Society will offer six scholarships for individuals to attend the conference. The scholarship application can be found at www.indianahistory.org/midwesternroots. Additional conference information, registration forms and exhibitor information can be found at www.indianahistory.org/midwesternroots or by calling (317) 232-1882. Hotel reservations can be made by calling the Indianapolis Marriott East at (317) 352-1231 or (800) 228-9290. Indicate association with Midwestern Roots 2005 upon making reservations to receive the special $92/night room rate. Room reservations must be made by August 1. The Indiana Genealogical Society promotes genealogical and historical research and education. Annual membership benefits include six issues of the IGS Newsletter; quarterly issues of the Indiana Genealogist with a cumulative index; discounts on IGS publications, workshop and conference registrations; opportunities to volunteer in genealogy related projects; access to free Query submissions, Speaker's Bureau, Researcher's List, Librarian Scholarship, Chapter Grants and special service recognition awards. (www.indgensoc.org) Since 1830, the Indiana Historical Society has been Indiana's storyteller, connecting people to the past by collecting, preserving, interpreting and disseminating Indiana history. The independent, nonprofit organization also publishes books and periodicals; sponsors teacher workshops; provides youth, adult and family programming; assists local historical groups throughout the state; and maintains one of the world's largest collection of material on the history of Indiana and the Old Northwest. The Indiana Historical Society is one of the oldest historical societies in the United States, and one of the largest with more than 10,000 members. (www.indianahistory.org)
Hello everyone, I have been thinking that since folks don't always have time for visiting hosted genealogy chats, and since no time is convenient for everyone, that perhaps we should create a mailing list to make up for that. I already have one for the state of Arkansas, and so far it has been a huge success! A place to share genealogy info, tips, hints, personal histories, anecdotes, and any information you may want to share. Discussing of all things Indiana, from Indiana surnames to recipes, old stories, photos and folklore. And hopefully, a place to find lost relatives.....This is the next best thing to dropping by a cousins' for coffee! :o) Keep in mind, this list WILL accept attachments, (i.e. photos, documents, etc...) but the way the list will be set up, there is no chance of virus' making it through. If you are interested, drop me a line, off list, and I'll give you the information needed to join. Please, this is NOT a RootsWeb list, so make sure you reply OFF LIST. Send your replies to philsbarbie@cei.net Hope to see you all there! :o) Take care, Diana List Admin
Would you please pass this on to your mailing list? Thanks much! Dear Listers, Please read this information, check out the websites noted in the article and then do your part by contacting your legislator and voicing your opposition to this bill. Sincerely, Darlene Anderson Executive Director, Genealogical Society of Marion County and County Coordinator, Marion County INGenWeb This information is from the IN-GENSOC-NEWS The electronic newsletter published by the Indiana Genealogical Society, Volume 2, Issue 1-26 January 2005 The Indiana General Assembly is once again considering a bill that would restrict access to birth and death records. This issue was last raised in the spring 2003 session of the state legislature, and at the time was defeated by a vote of 50-43, with 7 abstentions. This year's bill is House Bill 1551 (HB 1551), and if passed it would go into effect on July 1st. Sponsored by Representatives Peggy Welch, David Wolkins and Gregory Porter, the bill closes access to death records less than 50 years old, and birth records less than 75 years old. When vital records are issued, the bill limits access to: the person listed on the record; the mother or father of the person listed; the grandparent of the person listed, the spouse, sibling or offspring of the person listed, or "a person conducting a genealogical study in compliance with rules adopted by the state department". What is troubling is that rules created by the State Department of Health would not be subject to legislative measures. Also troubling is another provision of the bill, which says that the cause of death shall not be listed on a death record given out unless the person requesting the record "proves a documented need for the death certificate." The Indiana Genealogical Society urges Indiana residents to contact their legislator and voice their opposition to this bill. Contact information is available at < http://www.in.gov/legislative/ >. You can read the entire bill at < http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2005/IN/IN1551.1.html > Stay tuned for updates.
