    3. Hello I am the admin of this list. I have already sent a message through the list explaining things. Have you not received them? (I see you sent this message to two of my lists) I would suggest sending your messages to the owner of the lists, rather than the lists themselves. 3. This is a test of the Rootsweb lists I am on. It is also some information for the list administrator if they feel the list is not running as expected. And finally it is an attempt to get something posted to the list so Rootsweb does not turn the list off. The list admin should probably go to this page: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ and try to set up a new mailman login, if not already done. If you do that you will probably get to this page eventually: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/lists/setupmail Then you might want to sign up for this list: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/search/Listowners But be warned, you will receive postings from that list almost every day.  May 8 a day at times. Another option that I do not encourage is to turn the list over to me - at least temporarily.  Again, I do not want that done if you are willing to keep the list. Mike Flannigan

    1. [IN-CEMETERY-PRESERVATION] Old Westfield Friends Cemetery-Martha Doan Memorial Park
    2. Robert Goode
    3. Today several members of the Hamilton County Cemetery Commission met with City of Westfield Mayor, Andy Cook, and City of Westfield Parks Director, Melody Jones, to discuss the City's plans for the Martha Doan Memorial Park. The Parks Department had temporarily halted work when work on a water main at the site yielded human bones. The City immediately involved the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, who had reviewed the project earlier, and forensic experts from IUPUI. After review with the DNR, plans were slightly revised in order to proceed with the project in a manner so as not to disturb any graves. To this end, additional topsoil is being added to some areas that will require footers to support steps and a wall. Crushed stone walkways, located mostly where walkways through the park were created in the 1960's, will provide access without any negative impact. Any penetration into the soil will be minimally intrusive and outside of areas that ground radar has shown past disturbance of the soil (i.e. grave sites). The steps taken by the City of Westfield show serious consideration for preservation of this cemetery. In fact, interpretive signs planned for the park and the renaming of the park to include reference to the Old Friends name to the site will help to increase its recognition as a pioneer cemetery and final resting place of some of Westfield's founding families. The Cemetery Commission members present voiced their approval of the project as presented. As a Hamilton County resident with a keen interest in both our county's history and the preservation of our pioneer cemeteries, I appreciate the actions taken by Mayor Cook, Melody Jones and the City of Westfield to preserve this site and to call attention to it's contribution to Westfield's history. Upon it's completion, visitors to Westfield that enjoy their trail system will have the opportunity view a pioneer cemetery that reflects the respect of the community. If you are interested in seeing a rendering of the site plan, there is now a sign at the site on South Union Street. Robert Goode

    3. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana In the early-mid 1960's the Westield Women's Club embarked in a "beautification project" that resulted in the removal and stacking of the grave markers in the Westfield Old Friends Cemetery on south Union Street. They contacted Conner Prairie and offered them the stones but were told that the museum wasn't interested in any stones with dates of death after 1836. When a few interested citizens learned of the "project" and expressed their dissatisfaction with the treatment of this graveyard the stones were re-set in four rows on the back of the cemetery along with a single marker with the names of all known burials and a marker commemorating the civil war veterans buried there. All of the burials remained in place with no way of determining the exact location of the dead, since the markers ahd been moved from their original locations. Fast forward to 2010: The City of Westfield Parks Department has commenced construction of a new park to be named the Old Friends Memorial Park on the property. This will include constructions of walls, trail ways and water fountains. Initial demolition in the northwest end of the property has already yielded intrusion into a grave. A backhoe sits on top of graves ready to disturb more graves. All of this is within the rights of the City of Westfield as a municipality. The Hamilton County Cemetery Commission is initiating action to at least bring a pause to this project for further consideration by the Westfield city government. If you are interested in genealogy in Hamilton County and share our dismay that a local municipality would show such utter disregard for the remains of our ancestors, please contact the City of Westfield Parks Director, Melody Jones, at (317)804-3100 and share your displeasure with this project. You may write Ms. Jones at 2728 E. 271st Street, Westfield, IN 46074. In an election year, disfavor expressed about an issue like this goes a long way. Bob Goode Hamilton County Cemetery Commission

    1. [IN-CEMETERY-PRESERVATION] James Cemetery restoration project
    2. Fellow genealogists and anyone concerned with preserving our sacred cemeteries, Time Warner and The History Channel are sponsoring a 'Save Our History' grant award for which people can go online and cast their vote. Voting ends on April 27th, so time is short. Our cemetery restoration project was the only genealogy group or cemetery project to be chosen as one of the five finalists, so I truly hope that you will go to the Time Warner website and cast your vote for the James Cemetery project. If awarded this grant, we will use 100% of the grant to begin installing an antique-style aluminum alloy fence around the perimeter in order to help halt further desecration of this sacred and historic burial ground. You can read more about our James Cemetery project at the Time Warner 'Save Our History' voting website. Please unite with us as a group of people concerned about the ever-increasing destruction of our cemeteries by VOTING for us at the website below. And note also that ANYONE with Internet access can VOTE!! www.aroundrr.com/SaveOurHistory Anthony

    3. Hi everyone. Does anybody know if anything has been done to restore the Cincinatti Cemetery in Daviess County to it's original state? Most of you that have family in that cemetery know that in the 1950's, the farmer that ownee the land, bulldozed it so he could use the land to farm, and bulldozed the headstones into a ditch. Anybody know anything? My GG aunt and her husband, Mary Cobb and Joseph Journey are buried there. Not sure about anyone else in my family. Chances are my 3rd great grandparents, Jesse and Jenny (Mary) Cobb are also buried there. Thanks so much, Helen Cobb Rehm in MO

    3. Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other genealogical mailing list available, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any Rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If you are having problem and I do not answer you right away, know that I will. I like many of you work full time outside of my home. I am fortunate that I can check my e-mail any time I wish, but know that there are spaces of time I cannot. I always check my e-mail each and every evening and will respond to message as quickly as possible. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. On the other hand when the entire message is in CAPS we feel that we are being yelled at. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. 7. If your list has the gateway open, meaning the messages posted on the board also hit he list, know that every once in a while a SPAM message that is caught by the Board filter slips through the gateway and hits the list before it can be stopped. JUST DELETE IT. By responding to the list regarding he offending message, you just continue it on, and there is not one thing I can do about it at that point. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Fred Barkes To: Helen & Bill Cutshaw ; Nancy & Ed Wilson Cc: mark davis ; HELEN WILDERMUTH ; helen Sent: Sunday, May 09, 2004 4:51 PM Subject: Cemetery renewal on pace Saturday, May 08, 2004 Cemetery renewal on pace By Marla Miller mmiller@therepublic.com Columbus Township Trustee Fred Barkes continues to make good on his commitment to properly care for the township's abandoned cemeteries - and set an example for other trustees. Barkes is spending money to have the township's five abandoned cemeteries completely restored and he is paying for electromagnetic conductivity surveys at each burial grounds to find unmarked graves and buried headstones. The final bill will be about $55,000, but at no added expense to taxpayers. Last October, Barkes and the Columbus Township Trustee Advisory Board established a "rainy day fund", and set it up to draw on leftover money in the township, township assistance, fire and cumulative fire funds, to pay for cemetery restoration. So far, Barkes has used only excess money in the general township and township assistance funds. State law did not allow the township to draw on the fund until January, and it will be dissolved at the end of 2004, Barkes said. It was a quick, legal way to re-appropriate existing funds to fix the long-neglected cemeteries. "All this money we're spending is out of surplus," Barkes said. "All this is based off of unused funds from previous years. Each year, we set a budget and monies that don't get used go into the general fund." For years, cemetery maintenance has been listed as a line-item expense in the general township fund, and this year, routine upkeep such as mowing is still being paid out of that fund, Barkes said. Separate fund planned However, as the board builds the 2005 budget, the plan is to establish a separate cemetery maintenance fund, Barkes said. The fund will cover all aspects of cemetery care, including mowing, cleaning and aligning tombstones, and things such as fencing and signage. "It's the same allocation, but it puts it in its own separate bucket," he said. "In the past, anything left (in the line item) reverted to the general fund. By setting up a cemetery maintenance fund, it will stay in that fund." It has been Barkes' initiative that got the project rolling, said Ken Greenlee, advisory board president. Barkes took office in January 2003 and attended an Indiana Township Association conference last summer, where he learned more about maintaining township cemeteries and the laws that govern their care. "We as an advisory board only counsel and monitor what's going on, but it's become a priority issue with township government," Greenlee said. "We intend to continue it until it's completed and maintain them to the level of the law." Laws regarding township cemeteries continue to evolve, and Columbus Township plans to lead by example, Greenlee said. "It's long overdue," he said. "We intend to be a model for the county. Fred and I are of the thought there are two actions: performance and excuses. On something as sensitive as this, there's going to be public pressure." Greenlee noted that each township's annual financial report is public. "If you've got money sitting in a fund, you can use it," he said. "We just adjusted our budget to make these kinds of things happen. You can change the bottom line if you follow the proper process." Quality restoration Before the "rainy day fund," Barkes spent about $5,000 he had allotted for cemetery maintenance to refurbish 50 stones at Carter Chapel Cemetery on U.S. 31, north of Columbus. He hired cemetery-restoration professionals Helen Wildermuth of Martinsville and Mark Davis of Hartford City to do the work last fall. They worked throughout the winter and spring at Carter, Lambert, Gladstone and Garden City cemeteries and are nearly finished. Mount Pleasant Cemetery is the only one left to do. Wildermuth and Davis, who work throughout the state, said it is unusual for a trustee to authorize the work all in one year. "He's among the few that have been able to do that," Wildermuth said. "Fred is at the forefront of cemetery restoration, as far as the ones we've done." Davis said he knows of only two other townships in Indiana that have all of their township-controlled cemeteries restored. "Fred's done a good job, he's really kind of on the cutting edge," he said. "In one year, to go from having none done to all of them done really speaks well of Fred and Columbus." Barkes said he has heard many positive comments from the public. Two women personally stopped to thank him after they found relatives in Carter Cemetery thanks to Davis and Wildermuth's updated documentation. "People are just really amazed at the difference," he said. "When you compare before and after photos, it's like night and day." The county's other trustees and advisory boards also could establish "rainy day" or separate cemetery maintenance funds, but they have to have the means and the desire. "It's easier for Columbus Township because we are a bigger township and generate more tax revenue," Barkes said. "But I don't know why they don't. They should. Statute even allows us to generate a cemetery maintenance tax. "You've got to start somewhere. The law says to do it. I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing - my job." --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
