According to her newspaper obituary, my grandmother Lena Moore LUTHER was buried in Olio cemetery in August 1926. Does anyone know the location of this cemetery and if there is someone I could contact regarding graves registration. I am especially interested in finding out if her first husband, William WHITE, is buried in the same cemetery. Steve Collins Roswell, GA
In my reply to Nita, I said IRAD might have microfilmed the El Paso newspapers. Actually, it is the Illinois State Historical Society. Infomation on their holdings is at: http://www.state.il.us/hpa/lib/default.htm Click on the "Illinois Herald" banner about halfway down the page, then click on the search link on the next page and enter city="El Paso", county= "Woodford" and select "Illinois" to see a full list of their holdings. There is also a link for genealogical search requests on the main page. It wasn't working this morning, but I looked at it last night and the cost for out-of-state residents seemed to be rather steep ($10, If I remember correctly). It was much cheaper for Illinois residents. They do have the El Paso newspapers microfilmed--in fact, seem to have a more extensive collection than the El Paso library. Dan Steffen
Hello again, Nita-- I was at El Paso library this am doing a long-put-off search of their newspaper microfilms for my ancestors' obits. (They have such starting Jan 7, 1888--don't know if all issues, complete). As I expected there was a large obituary for J. I. Kerr, which I have copied for you. Now the bad news. The copier on their only microfilm reader is barely functional and the copy quality is terrible. To make matters worse, the original microfilm seems to have been photographed slightly out of focus. The net result is that what I have for you is almost unreadable. If I try to scan it and email as an attachment, I'm sure it would lose the last shred of readability. Please email me privately with your snail mail address and I'll send it to you. Since the newspapers are microfilmed, it might have been done as part of IRAD's newspaper project. I think they have a link on their site that tells what they have. If they do have them, they may be able to get a better-quality copy. The issue is the El Paso Journal, Saturday, June 30, 1906. Very briefly, he died of complications following surgery in which some two hundred (!!!) gall stones were removed. I made some notes from the microfilm, since you might not be able to read the copy. He was born in St. Fergus, Aberdeen, Scotland Dec 27, 1856. He came to the US in 1866 with his parents Thomas and Susanna Kerr. The family settled first near Flanagan, IL, then moved to Gridley, IL in 1897(?--hard to read microfilm. If so, James came to the area several years before them). Thomas died Dec 27, 1905 and Susanna Jan 30, 1905. James ran a drugstore in Gridley until 1880, when he moved to El Paso and went into the insurance and loan business. He apparently became a prominent and respected businessman. He served as mayor of El Paso for several years, resigning during his third term shortly before his death. El Paso's beloved (by some of us, at least) brick sidewalks, which are now being torn up due to deterioration and safety concerns (but the bricks preserved as accents in the city's landscaping projects) are mentioned as one of his initiatives. He married Harriet M. Hartley of El Paso Mar 2, 1877. They had two sons, J. Hartley Kerr, who would turn 19 in the fall of 1906, and Courtney V. Kerr, who would be 8 that fall. He was also survived by five sisters, Mrs. C.R. Bamber, Eureka; Mrs. B. A. Cotton, Yorkville; Mrs. M. E. Bamber, Flanagan; Mrs, A. T. Kent and Mrs. James Andrews, Gridley. Now, quite coincidentally, I was at the Gridley cemetery yesterday evening looking for my great-grandparent Gibbs' graves, and I chanced to see the graves of Thomas and Susanna Kerr, and jotted down their info, which was basically just names and years: Thomas Kerr 1825--1905 Susanna Kerr 1829--1905 Also in this plot were: Harriet Bamber 1897--1969 Margaret Ann Bamber 1859--1931. The plot consisted of a large, brown head stone with the name "Kerr" and four small footmarkers in the same stone with the individuals names and dates. It's along the east road inside the cemetery, and on the east side of the road, if I remember correctly, perhaps halfway down the road. Gridley cemetary is along the Gridley/Flanagan blacktop (east side of town), about a quarter-mile north of town. Hope this will be of some help. Sorry the quality of the copies came out so badly. Have you checked the El Paso History webpage at http://www.elpaso.net/~bank/elpasohistory/index.htm for anything about him? I found him in the table of city officials last night, but there may be more in the text sections. Perhaps I can help: Go to Family Search.com on the Web (the LDS site) and pull up the Catalog of the Library's holdings and you will see that the SLC Genealogical Society filmed Woodford County's Naturalization records in 1984. They have Naturalization papers, 1855-1906; Naturalization Records 1861-1901; and Naturalization Records 1867-1906. You can see the details for yourself. If you want to print them out, click in the white box by Title/Author and then hit "Print" Then hit the box that tells about the microfilm nos. and do the same. You will see that there are 7 reels of film in total. I hope this helps some of you. When doing your "Custom Search" only put in the county you want and then you can pick from the state when the list comes up. This is the easiest way to access what you want. Arlene Keith A. Unlike many counties, Woodford has chosen to retain old records rather than to transfer them to IRAD (Illinois Regional Archives Depository, http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/data_loc.html). I've noticed that they also don't particularly appreciate the distraction of searching for us genealogists. If you needs records from neighboring counties and if those records are in the possession of IRAD, then you're in luck. I've found the folks at UI-Normal (that's where the records depository for East Central Illinois is located) to be very helpful and fairly prompt too. If you meet them half way with enough information for an intelligent search, they will go the extra mile and then some to help. When I asked for a copy of my gg grandfather's Declaration of Intent he tried several different ways to photocopy the document for the most readable results. All they charge is a nominal fee for copies. They're one of the biggest bargains going for Illinois research. Wayne Busby Lucerne, CA http://www.dnai.com/~waynejay/gen/genlinks/genlinks.htm
Dear List: I had made an inquiry about naturalization records to the Chicago branch of the National Archives & Records Administration awhile back. They looked in their index & found the naturalization record that I wanted (Georg SHOOK/SHUCK); they wrote me with the citation for the record (volume/page #/etc) & told me that it was held at the Woodford Co. Circuit Court. I wrote to the Circuit Court & was told that no such record existed (did not explain whether it was not where NARA-Chicago cited it was NOR whether it they did not have that volume anymore NOR whether they had any naturalization records there at all; bottom line: their response was not very informative & was signed by with a first name only (not the person I had addressed it to)). Questions: Does anyone have experience with Woodford Co. naturalization records? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks for your help, Keith Bisaillon Mountain View, CA
Nita ~ As for the obituary, I wish I knew; perhaps someone will give us an answer to that one. For a Death Certif. write to the Woodford County Clerk, 115 North Main St., Eureka, IL 61530-1273. They have death certificates and birth records from 1871 nd marriage records from 1841. There telephone number is (309) 467-2822. You might have to call as to the cost. It would help if you have an approximate date. Just learned through a l903 Will of an ancestor that "I give pictures of my husband, Thomas Size and of my son Thomas J. Size to Bishop John Spaulding of Peoria, Illinois to be given by him, and for use of the Orphan Asylumn at Metamora, Ill." Does anyone know if Orphan Asylumn at Metamora still exists and address to inquire about said pictures? Mary Anne Jackson jesmar@hamilton.net
If this is the family I am think of the correct town name is MINONK, IL. They were friends of Mildred and Myrl McKee and they vacationed together many times as well as enjoying Football games in Bloomington. Myrl was Vice-President of the Minonk State Bank and I believe Mr Davison was on the Board if memory serves me correctly. Myrl was my step father and both are deceased. I am new to this site. J. Harold Davison b. ? in Winonk, IL; d. May 3, 1984 in Pasadena, CA; Masonic Rites in Davison Cemetery June 25, 1984. I only knew him to be called Dave. His second wife was Margaret (Margie) Elizabeth Walkup Romine Davison. She passed away in 1993 and is now buried beside Dave. Margie is my great-aunt and my father and her were very close but I don't even think I met her. I do know that her and Dave were very witty. I have some pictures of Dave's mother but she is simply labled as "Dave's mother" in them. Dave worked in a lab and invented a charcoal briquette and made a decent fortune with it. <--- long story. Dave and Margie did not have children but Dave had children with a previous wife. That's about all I have. Anyone out there have a book or something on the Davison Cemetery? I went to the Woodford County site but didn't see anything helpful for this one. I am searching for any living descendants of Henry H. Everett (1850-1920, buried Olio Cemetery) and Emma A. FINLEY Everett (1858-1939, buried Olio Cemetery). Several of their children were living in Woodford County, or at least probably married in Woodford County. If any reader knows anything about any living descendants of the following, all children of Henry and Emma, I would appreciate a reply: Edward E. Everett, b. 1876 (m. Anna Yotty), they do not have any descendants, but am adding their names for completeness. Susan Everett HEFNER (probably born between 1877 and 1884, not listed with parents in 1900 census), living in Eureka, IL in 1920; deceased by 1939 Mamie or Kay Everett KYLE (probably born between 1877 and 1884, not listed with parents in 1900 census; listed as Mamie in father's and brother's obituaries; listed as Kay in mother's obituary; living in Eureka, IL in 1952 Walter Everett, b. 1885, living in Snoqualine, WA in 1952 James Everett, b. 1887, living in ElPaso, IL, in 1939; deceased by 1952 Joseph Everett, b. 1889, living in Houston, TX in 1952 Jessie (son), b. 1892, living in Pontiac, IL in 1939, deceased by 1952 Esther Everett PETTICORD, b. 1889, living in Eureka, IL, in 1939; deceased by 1952 Ruth Everett SHULTZ, b. 1894, living in Kewanee, IL in 1939 and living in Eureka, IL in 1952 Ruby Everett, SINGER, b. 1896, living in Canton, OH, in 1939; deceased by 1952 One son preceded the father, Henry H., in death, and his name is not listed in any obituaries nor in the 1900 census. The obituary of the mother, Emma, in 1939, stated that she had 30 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. I'm hoping that some of the readers of this list know the names and locations of some of the living descendants of this couple, Henry H. and Emma Everett, who came to Woodford County about 1883. If I am not mistaken, I briefly browsed this book while at the LDS family history library in Salt Lake City a few months back. It was very interesting, citing various names of places and how those names were chosen as well as identifying prominent people of the time. ----- Original Message ----- From: John E Fischer <fischerj@one.net> To: <ILWOODFO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 03, 2000 7:50 PM Subject: [ILWOODFO-L] Past and Present of Woodford County > The book 'Past and Present of Woodford County, Illinois' was originally > published in 1878. The book 'Past and Present of Woodford County, Illinois' was originally published in 1878. I have a reproduced copy from UNIGRAPHICS, INC; 1401 North Fares Avenue; Evansville, Indiana 47711. The reproduction was sponsored by the Woodford County Historical Society; Metamora, Illinois in 1979. (I believe the Historical Society is now located on South Main in Eureka IL.) 'The Past and Present of Woodford County - 1878' lists on page 589 "Fulfs, J. E., farmer; P.O. Miinonk." and "Fulfs, Henry, farmer; P.O. Minonk." There are no other people named Fulfs listed.
