    1. [ILWOODFO-L] Woodford Co cemeteries online
    2. I thought I'd pass on a link that just opened on the Woodford Co Cemeteries pages that David Fever has been working so hard on. The Minonk Twp Cemetery database is now online at http://www.elpasoil.org/woodford/minonk/minonk/index.html It's a database of about 5000 burials at that cemetery. The URL for the home page for Woodford County Cemeteries that Mr Fever is working on is http://www.elpasoil.org/woodford/publish/ These online cemeteries have been very helpful to me with regards to my Woodford Co research. Hopefully they'll help some of you on this list, too. Amy Robbins-Tjaden atjaden@mindspring.com

    3. Hoping to find other researchers who might recognize the family of Paul Friedrich August Carstens and Gesche Margarete Janssen Carstens. Son Friedrich Wilhelm CARSTENS was born in Bockhorn, Germany in 1879. In 1903, he wed Margaret Peeken of Danforth, IL at Peoria. He listed his residence as Minonk, IL. In 1890, Jennie Carstens , a sister, wed Gustav Hoffman at Flanagan, IL. She listed her residence as Long Point. Believe the family came to US about 1882. Thanks for any help. I found my very long lost GGrandmother here! http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/marriage.html I note that unfortunately Woodford County is not represented. I've sent a note to see what is necessary to volunteer to help input the information for Woodford County. I'm sure that if we can get a few people to volunteer we could get the information on the list very quickly. Think how many people who are not local might be able to connect to Woodford County roots here! John E Fischer Cincinnati OH

    2. Pat A Ellis
    3. Recently, I had posted a question regarding the "old canal" in Peoria, IL. I have the answer and would like to share it with you. This information was sent to me by a cousin, Jackie C. The "old canal" was the Illinois - Michigan Canal. It is a 120 mile long corridor that extends from the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle / Peru. It passed through 49 communities in five counties. The canal itself was 96 miles long and dug more than 150 years ago by thousands of immigrants, most of them Irish, by hand. The canal opened in 1848. The canal opened a shipping channel all the way from New York Harbor to New Orleans. It ushered in waves of development and made Chicago America's greatest inland port and gave birth to many towns along the way. It also made it possible for the farmers in the area to ship their grain to eastern markets. The Illinois - Michigan Canal closed in 1933. Woodford County, is located just south-west of LaSalle County farther down the Illinois River. If you want to find more information about the canal, check this web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcanal. ============================================================ ============================================================ This email and any attachments may contain confidential information and it is intended for the addressee only. 3. Hi Patti ! I have a little infomation on Jost Schroder who was married to Trintje (also known as Katie). My gg-grandfather, Mimke, was one of Trintje's brothers. John Aden (another brother of Trintje) and Jost were very close friends. The Schroder name originally has those two dots over the "o". Later the name was changed (not sure legally or by useage) to Schroeder. John and Jost moved their families to Butler County, Nebraska in the spring of 1880 onto land which Mimke had bought for them. Am very interested in making a connection with you to share other information..hopefully we can fit some missing puzzle pieces! BTW..are we related????<grin> Sandie ******************************* Referenced Note**************************** Looking for info on Jost Schroder who was in "Wasburn" (may have been the correct spelling or a misspelling), Woodford Co. Ill on Jan 1, 1877 per Bible records. He married Trintje Aden 23 Jan 1877, I assume in Woodford Co. because of the date. Born 16 Aug 1849, Trintje (or Thrintje) was born 6 Jan 1856. Children were Margaretha, Heyo, Peter, Johann, Hinrich, Cente Maria, Catharine, Joseph and Martin Theodor. Thanks, Patti G. :-)

    3. I'll be happy to do look ups, but please give me a week or more, depending on the number of requests for the State Census as they are not alphabetized and are all hand written so I may not be able to decifer, but will put my best effort forth. The 1790 Federal Census has an index so is much easier. I have CD's for: Georgia: 1870 Fed.Census of Putnam, Randolph, Rabun, and Quitman Counties Illinois: 1870 Census for Alexander and Bond Counties. Ohio: 1870 Census Ashland County 1790 Federal Census for CT, ME, MD, MA, NH, NY, RI, SC, VT, NC and PA. Patti G. :-)

Thank you. Carol Watkins at Watkins254@AOL. Com. A man named Roswell Goings (don't know if he's yours or not) figures into one of the better-known pieces of Lincoln lore. The following is from http://www.cmi.k12.il.us/Urbana/projects/LinkOn/trials.html : The Disappearing Defendant (Metamora/Woodford) Melissa Goings was a 70- year- old woman whose husband, Roswell Goings, age 77, was frequently drunk. They fought often. On April 14, 1857, Mr. Goings tried to strangle his wife. She picked up a piece of wood from the stove and struck him twice. One of the blows fractured his skull. He died 4 days later. Melissa Goings was charged with murder, and her bail was set at $1,000. Two local property owners paid the bail. However, the judge revoked the bail and said she must go to trial right away. He said she must be in the custody of the sheriff until the trial time. Abraham Lincoln was the defense attorney for Melissa Goings. He believed that the judge had already decided that his client was guilty and that she wouldn't get a fair trial. Mr. Lincoln asked to talk to his client on the lower level of the court house. When the judge called the case to trial, he couldn't find Mrs. Goings. He asked Mr. Lincoln where his client was. Mr. Lincoln said, "I don't know. I left her on the lower level. The sheriff should be watching her." They searched the lower level of the court house, but they couldn't find Melissa Goings, and she was never seen in Illinois again. The authorities made no effort to find her and bring her back. The prosecutor tried to collect on her bail bond, but after talking to Mr. Lincoln, he dropped the case. There were many guesses about what had happened to Mrs. Goings. The court bailiff said that he asked Mr. Lincoln about his client. Mr. Lincoln told him he didn't know where she was. The bailiff then remarked, " Confound you, Abe. You've run her off." "Oh no, Bob. I didn't run her off," Mr. Lincoln said. " She wanted to know where she could get a good drink of water, and I told her there was mighty good water in Tennessee."
