    3. I recently responded to a message board post offering an old Grove family photo. According to the poster, the notation on the back of the photo says "H. J. Grove and Bros", and was taken in Colfax, McLean County, Illinois. Date is unknown. The poster suggested turn of the century to WWI, but I think it is older than that, judging by the dress. It does not appear to be my family, since I've found no connection to the Colfax area. If you think this might be your family, I can forward you a low-res .gif of the photo, and the poster's email. An excerpt from her message is below. If anyone is on the Tazwell County, Illinois list (where a number of Grove families settled), could you please forward a copy of this email to that list? I am not subscribed. Dan Steffen dlsteffn@elpaso.net El Paso, IL ************************************* Email excerpt: Hi Dan, The photo I have (low-res .gif attached) looks to be WW I vintage. The writing on the back says "H.J. Grove and bros." It was taken in Colfax, IL. I would really love to reunite it with its family. $5 covers what it cost me ($3.75) it plus postage, packaging, etc. So if you locate the right party, have them write me. This is an attractive cabinet card photo in nice condition! --Sue

If you are researching this name and would like to trade information, maybe we could help each other. Allied families include SCHROEDER, KALKWARF, WOLTZEN, DECKER, JOHNSON/JANSSEN, MONK, HARMS, DETMERS among others. Please email me if you feel like exploring possibilities. 1. Metamora orphanage?
    2. Amy Robbins-Tjaden
    3. In the 1900 census for Metamora Twp I just came across a section that lists about a dozen Catholic sisters which is followed by about a page and a half of young people referred to as "inmates". These appear to include some siblings, in addition to names that don't seem to be related to any others. Am I correct in thinking this might be a list of children at St Mary's Orphanage? It seems it almost must be but I hate to assume and would appreciate it if someone who knows could tell me if I'm right or wrong. Thanks, Amy Robbins-Tjaden atjaden@mindspring.com

    3. I've received many answers none really to the point. Let me restate the question. Is anyone aware - do any records exist of the first members/attendees of the Apostolic Christian Church? 3. I am not familiar with the family. I grew up a short distance from Spring Bay which is one of the older locations in Woodford County (Fort Creve Coeur a french fort and settlement being the oldest is in Tazwell). There are 2 catholic churches in the Metamora area. St Mary's in Metamora and Lordes Church lies almost in between Spring Bay and Metamora on the Santa Fe trail. The church has 2-3 cemetaries in the area and I believe they keep records. Unfortunately I have been unable to get in touch with them during their business hours. (My guess is that the person that might be able to assist with any record searches only works a few days per week and maybe for just a few hours. They may be a volunteer, clergy or a nun maybe. ) I have relatives buried in one of these cemetaries and have been trying to get more information on them. The number for the church can be found via information . The area code is 309 it is in metamora and the prefix is 367. Let me know if you have any luck or if you find out the process for requesting information. I have not had the time recently to follow this path more in depth. oops just found their contact information St Mary's Friary 415 W Chatham Metamora Il 309 367 4407 St Mary's Friary Lourdes RR2 Box 255 (historically santa fe trail) Metamora IL (309) 383 4460 I also know that some of the cemetary grounds keeper know a great deal of oral history. They are getting on in age. However, if you could get in contact with one of these people you might learn a great deal. Arlene Bogardus wrote: > You mentioned Black Partridge. 3. Ellen, I checked the web site for the historical society and I can't quite tell what records they have, but I do remember seeing a few references to Eureka Christian Church. I haven't contacted them yet so I can't give you my experience. I do know that in order to use their services, or to have one of them search for you, you must send a membership of $20. If you're certain that your ancestors were members of the church, this isn't a bad deal since I'm sure they have overhead for such a great undertaking, and they do seem to have a lot of information. Here is the message I got from the historical society: > Please see our home page > http://users.aol.com/dishistsoc > for a fee sheet for non-members doing research. > > You will need to send a written request with your $20 membership fee. 2. My great grandfather was Harrison Darst, He was the son of John and Ruhama Darst.I am looking for information on my grandfather Frank Darst, who was born in Eureka in 1873. He was a veterinarian and practised in Ottawa Kansas from 1900 to 1920.I need to know when he moved to Kansas and if he went to Eureka colledge for his Vet degree. My mother is 97 years old now and she said that her grandfather Harrison Darst was buried in Eureka, ILL. and that his father John Darst was very dedicated to Eureka college. I do genealogy and I cant find out why John Darst and Ruhama Mohler being German would have their son Harrison Darst telling my mother that he was part Indian? My mother said that when she lived in Kansas as a girl, that she would go accross the dirt road to see grandpa Harrison who lived in a Tee Pee. I can find his brothers civil war records but it dosen't seem that Harrison was in the civil war. I saw a map of Eureka and there is a street named for him in front of the college. I saw a paper in our family files that said Harrison died of Enphesema and is burried in the Darst family plot in Eureka.I would like to have a copy of any of the information you might have on Harrison or his son Frank. Thank you Jerry Hale
