    3. Amy-- Go to Susan von Behren Ruth's von Behren website at http://www.vonbehren.org/ and click on "Family Lines", then select Jim Anderson's "Woodford County" line. I'm pretty sure Mrs. von Behren was Ernestine Louise Schlosser, wife of Frederick William von Behren. The von Behren family was from the same parish in Germany as my Steffen ancestors (Hartum, just west of Minden). My family originally settled in Washington County in south central Illinois, but my grandfather and great uncle migrated north to El Paso about 1910. I've wondered if the presence of families from the "old country" might help explain how they came to settle in Woodford County. The von Behrens are the only ones I've found so far, but our family doesn't seem to have maintained any close connections with them that I've been able to establish. FYI, I see in Jim's gedcom a Becky Robbins, born 1959, who married von Behren descendant Daniel Koch. Any relation? 3. >From untitled, undated newspaper clipping: Garrelt Folkers Called by Death - Benson's Oldest Citizen Passes Away, Friday, Aged Nearly Ninety Years - Resides in County Many Years - Funeral Services Held Sunday at St Peter's Where Mr Folkers Helped Build First Church Last Friday morning saw the passing of Benson's oldest citizen, Garrelt Weert Folkers, who lacked but a few days of attaining the grand age of 90 years. His death came in the twinkling of an eye. Seated in a chair at his daughter's restaurant, he had just replied to the daughter's inquiry and stated that he was ready for his meal. The daughter placed the meal up on the table; when she went back to her father, he had passed on into eternity, where meals are unknown. Funeral services for Benson's patriarch were held on Sunday afternoon at St Peter's church, he having been one of the early settlers who helped build the first church for this congregation. Rev. J. Haferman conducted services in German and Rev. Fred Seifert in English. Burial took place at the church cemetery. The great gathering at the funeral was mute testimony of the place Mr Folkers held in the hearts of the people of his community. Those acting as pallbearers were Louis Sakes, John Folkers, H.A. Seifert, Adolph Heineke, Oscar Stimpert and John Heineke. Garrelt Weert Folkers was born at Remels, Ostfriesland, Germany on March 2, 1834 and died at Benson, Ill. on Feb. 22, 1924, aged 89 years, 11 months and 21 days. At the age of 20 years he came to America and was employed for several years at Washington, Ill. He then came to Woodford county, locating in Linn township, where he was united in marriage with Hannah [Amy's note: her name was Harmke] Tjaden. Some years later they moved to Clayton township. When old age came, they went to Benson to spend the evening of their lives, where the wife passed away fifteen years ago. Since then he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs Ellich Woltzen. Mr Folkers was the father of ten children, four preceding him in death. Those surviving are Hillie, of Kankakee; Weert, of Charles City, Iowa, and George, Mrs Lizzie Stimpert, Mrs Tallie Woltzen and Mrs Minnie Geiken, all of Benson. There also survive one brother, John Folkers of Benson, thirty grandchildren and thirty-eight great grandchildren. (Thanks, Linda!) Amy atjaden@mindspring.com

    1. [ILWOODFORD] obit - Lena KALKWARF HEINEKE
    2. Amy Robbins-Tjaden
    3. This is from an undated, untitled obit, probably from a Minonk newspaper. Eternal Rest for Mrs Henry Heineke - Widely Known Resident of Benson Passes Away on Saturday Afternoon - Funeral Tuesday Afternoon - Deceased a Native of Germany, but had Lived at and near Benson for About 65 Years. Mrs Henry Heineke, for 46 years a resident of Benson, died at her home there on Saturday afternoon at 2:20 o'clock, as a result of a paralytic stroke she suffered two weeks before. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, from the Benson Lutheran church, Rev. Fred Seifert officiating. Burial took place at St John's cemetery. In spite of the rainy weather there was a large attendance of friends and relatives from far and near. Beautiful floral offerings spoke in their mute way of the love and esteem in which she was held by all who knew her. Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs Frank Kalkwarf and daughter, Mrs Frank Rewerts, and Mr and Mrs Henry Harms and son, of Rochelle; Mr and Mrs Dave Stimpert and family, Mr and Mrs Henry Stimpert , Mr and Mrs Frank Stimpert and Mrs Ed Long of Panola; Henry Kalkwarf and daughter, Tenna, and Mr and Mrs Will Vissering, of Minonk; Clifford Kalkwarf, of Spires; Mr and Mrs Dave Kalkwarf, of Flanagan; Mr and Mrs D.J. Heineke, of Peoria; W.J. Heineke, of Decatur; and F.A. Heineke, of Chicago, and many others from the surrounding country. Lena Kalkwarf was born in Moenke Boe, Ostfriesland, Germany, March 8, 1854. In 1857 she, with her parents, came to this country. After a short stay in Peoria they came to Benson and settled on a farm in Clayton township, where she spent her girlhood days. In 1870 she was confirmed in St Peter's church and remained a faithful member of that faith to the end. On Oct. 19, 1876, she was united in marriage with Henry Heineke. The young couple made their home in Benson, where the husband was in business for many years. Five children were born to them, who with their father mourn the death of a faithful wife and mother. The three sons, Henry J., John E., and Frank reside in Benson; one daughter, Mrs John Peters, in Indiana, and the other, Mrs Frank Fagot, in Grandin, North Dakota. There are also twenty-three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. About five years ago the deceased suffered a paralytic stroke, which left her an invalid for the rest of her life. Patiently and uncomplainingly she bore her cross. A second and third stroke within the last two weeks ended in death. She will long be remembered by many who were befriended by her love and kindliness. (Thanks, Linda!) Amy atjaden@mindspring.com

    1. [ILWOODFORD] obit - Fanny KALKWARF OLTMAN
    2. Amy Robbins-Tjaden
    3. This is from an undated, untitled obit. I would imagine it was probably from the Minonk newspaper that was being published at the time of Fanny's death (circa 1918). Mrs Remmer Oltman died at her home Monday afternoon at 2:05. She had been sick for a number of years but about a week ago she was stricken with influenza and this combined with her other ailments caused her death at the age of 59 years and 11 months. Fanny Hinrichs Kalkwarf was born May 17, 1859 in Clayton township. When a month old she was baptized at St Peter's Lutheran church. Here she was also confirmed in the year 1876. On the 27th of October of 1886, she was united in marriage to Remmer Oltman. This union was blessed with six children, four sons and two daughters. They lived on their farm in Greene township until February of this year when her lingering illness made it neccessary for them to move to town where a nice home had been bought. She went through many trials and had to suffer more than she could almost bear, especially in the last two years. Very often she thought her end was near and she prepared herself to meet the Saviour in whom she trusted. Mrs Oltman was always a faithful worker in her home and it was not until she was compelled to yield to her sickness that she gave up the duties of her household. Those left to mourn her death are her husband, four sons, John, Henry, Hallie and Frank; two d! aughters, Mrs Herman Peters and Mrs Fred Seifert; one sister, Mrs Henry Heineke of Benson; one brother, Frank Kalkwarf of Rochelle, eight grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends. The funeral was held Thursday at 1 p.m. and she was laid to rest at St Peter's cemetery, Rev. J.W. Hafermann officiating. (Thank you, Linda!) Amy atjaden@mindspring.com
