The information that you sent fills in some of my blanks. I did not have Elizabeth HAYBERGER christen date or Conrad H. death information etc. Better that I send what I now have and you can fill in some blanks also. I had John J. TOOL and Elizabeth HAYBERGER marriage date but it is suppose to be a bond and I haven't found it yet. What I have I r received from Alma Tool Steider back in 1974 and was taken from "History of Woodford County 1878". John J. TOOL settled in this township in the fall of 1833. When Woodford County as laid off in 1841, the line ran thru his house, but his land excepting, a small lot, was in Woodford Co. He made his claim to pre-emption, as the land was not then in the market. He remained upon his original settlement until 1849, when he moved into Metamora Tnp., about 2 miles from the village, where he died on 25 May 1871. He left several sons--good citizens--some of whom live in Green Twp., and one M. TOOL lives in the village of Metamora. Mr.. Tool was a cooper, and the first mechanic of that branch of industry in town. He was also somewhat of a carpenter, and assisted many of the first settlers in building their first cabins. Most of the houses were at that time built of logs in their natural state. and he would erect a scaffold and "hew them down", after the houses had been erected. Thanks Bob, Thanks for the information on the look up help Bob. Every little bit helps. I also have a Truitt in the family. John G. Truitt, who married Hester or Esther Ann Loveless in 1854 in Woodford CO., most likely in Spring Bay. Thanks again, Tom
I am searching for information about John J. TOOL and Elizabeth Hayberger TOOL who moved from August CO., VA. in the fall of I have death dates and I know they were buried in Metamora Twp. but not the cemetery(s) they were buried in. Our Gene. Society doesn't have any Cemetery information on Woodford CO. On the IL. State Gene. Soc. web site I found a listing of two cemetery's in Metamora Twp. Oakwood Cem. which is active and Sand Ridge which is inactive. Is there a list of burials in these cemeterys or does anyone do look ups? Thanks for the help in advance. Mickey in Iowa
I am still searching for my relatives that lived in Spring Bay, Ill. between 1853 - 1888. They were: HESSELEIN, George, Leonard, John !, Anna, Fred, John 11 (my grandfather), Abigail, and William. If anyone has any information on any or all of these relatives Please contact me at : Bjessen760@aol.com Thank you, Barbara
The North-South line from my memory was the Santa Fe that used to run through Minonk, Roanoke, Eureka and Cruger. Just East of Eureka the line joined the TP&W Railroad right of way. I'm not sure where they split again but it was West of Cruger. The Santa Fe "Doodlebug" was a combined passenger, mail, freight and engine car (a very rare perhaps unique design, I believe) that ran on that line Not too many years ago I saw it at hobby & model shops. Much of the Santa Fe right of way, in the Roanoke area at least, has now been obliterated. Hello there, I just subscribed to the list, and I am looking for information on the city of Spring Bay. Some of my ancestors lived there around the 1850's to the 1890's, and some may still live there. My gg-grandfather was Crozier Loveless, lived in Spring Bay from the 1860 census to his death in 1878. Crozier was a carpenter and a Mason. Two of his daughters married Crockers from Spring Bay. The Crockers may have operated a saw mill in that time period. Another ancestor might have worked for either the police department or may have been the highway commissioner in Peoria in the late 1800's. I would appreciate any information in finding out more about the early history of Spring Bay and Woodford CO. Thank you, Tom Loveless Little Rock, AR
The original east-west rail through Eureka was called, I believe, the Peoria and Oquawka Company (1856). It was the Toledo, Peoria, and Western (TP&W) in my lifetime, but there were possibly other names between the two. I think there's also a north-south line, but I'm not sure what it is/was called. Steve, This is an excerpt from my g aunt Cora Rowan's diary of `1887: Thursday August 11 "It having rained last night-the men did not come till after dinner. Heard at dinner of the great R.R. wreck. Four from Eureka killed. Charley & Willie went out to town to hear about the Wreck. Mrs. Wood and Wilson here. Friday August 12 No definite news from wreck. Jesse Meek and Mrs. Clay L.E. buried. " Hope this helps. I believe the newspaper of that time was the "Eureka Journal" I think the address of the historical society is on the web page. If not, let me know, and I'll try to find it somewhere in all this mess. >-) (looks like a train came through my desk. Ellen Rowan Taylor
Looking for names of railroad(s) that passed through or near Eureka about 1880 through 1900. Also, any newspaper records that might be available for same time. My g-gfather, Charles WHITE, died in a railroad accident ( he may have been a brakeman) about this time.

I tried to obtain a copy of the combined Woodford County Atlas reprint by writing to the address for the Woodford County Historical Society as listed in one of Woodford-D Digests a week or so ago. Unfortunalely my letter was returned due to incorrect address. I would appreciate if anyone knew of an updated address, assuming the society still exists. I would really like to purchase a copy of this book.

Hi, Anybody know where I could buy the following book: "The Past and Present of Woodford County Illinois - 1878" Thanks. Marcia Johnson
http://www.state.il.us/HPA/METAMORA.HTM I don't know how many people know how famous Woodford County actually is? A then unknown Abraham Lincoln argued many a case at the Metamora Courthouse. Interesting link to a page provided by the State of Illinois.
Any chance these pages could be scanned and shared? I would be very interested in reading this information. This Versailles sure fits a lot better than the one in Brown County (SE IL near Beardstown). Thanks! Wayne
Considering the time period you may want to check the locationn of 'Versailles, IL.' There was a town just east of Eureka no totally gone, that was called Versailles. Check "The Past and Present of Woodford County Illinois - 1878" pages 245-248 where you will find a very interesting story of the fight over the county seat. Versailles was the original county seat. later moved to Hanover (now called Metamora) and finally to its present site at Eureka. Here is a link to the Disciples of Christ Historical Society: http://members.aol.com/dishistsoc/ Here is a list of congregational historical material on microfilm for congregations in Illinois followed by film number. I'm thinking this information might be of benefit to more than myself. As you can see this church was quite active in our research area. I suspect my ancestors associated themselves with the Eureka congregation, but only further investigation will tell for sure.
