Atwood dropped dead very suddenly at 1 o’clock Monday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Oscar Moore, on Monroe Street. She had enjoyed good health during the latter part of her life, and her death came without warning. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o’clock Wednesday at the Lake Creek Church, east of this city by Rev. F. M. Pope. Interment was held at the church cemetery. Narcissa Elizabeth Simmons was born at Spillertown, Ill. October 30, 1847 and died at Johnston City, Ill. April 30, 1928, aged 80 years and 6 months. She was the oldest child of Zara and Syprissa Simmons in a family of 12 children. She married to I. N. Atwood in October 1869. The husband passed away in 1905. Twelve children were born to this union, six of whom survive. Edgar and Frank of Johnston City, Mrs. Ada Odom of Benton, Roy of Marion, Mrs. Ida Dillon and Mrs. Ella Moore of Johnston City. Two daughters, Mrs. Eva Travelstead and Mrs. Fanny Spiller preceded her in death, as did Charley and Turner, twin boys who died very young, and two sons who died in infancy. One brother, George Simmons of near Johnston City and one sister, Mrs. Susie Sangerman of Herrin also survive her. Mrs. Atwood united with the Christian Church at Spillertown before her marriage. In later life she came to adhere to the Primitive Baptist faith. Aunt Betty, as she was commonly known, spent her entire life in this community, and has a large circle of relatives and friends. she was a faithful Christian wife and mother, a good neighbor and a true and consistent friend. 5/3/1928 - JCP Obituary clipping found among my grandmother and great grandmothers belongings. I had no real proof of this, so I am grasping at straws you might say. And I am going to put it out to ask for your help from some kind soul. I have been trying to find this part of the family for over 15 years. Also looking for more on my great grandmother. E-mail me on that one. I did look up Timothy Dungy on the 1870 C. as follows: Dungy, Timothy age 30 b: Tn Narcissis 26 Nancy 80 So your assumption that the 1860 C. was in error on Nancy's age is correct. She was still a little older than her husband and if she was 70 in 1860 she would have still been too old to have been the Mother of Harriett!! She would have been 48 when Timothy was born and that is a little old also. Hope this helps some.
