    1. Re: [Wmsn Co IL] F. M. Wright
    2. Margaret, There is a Wm. F Wright listed in the 1850 Macoupin Co census. He was 6 yrs old according to the census. However, the 1920 census of Williamson shows Wm. F Wright born about 1853, not 1843. There is a marriage record for William F to Martha given as WRIGHT, WILLIAM F GOODWIN, MARTHA A 08/12/1886 1/ 178 SHELBY and WRIGHT, F M TRAVELSTEAD, MARTHA E 05/11/1873 C /272 WILLIAMSON There is a William F Wright listed in the 1860 Williamson Co census, age 7. Parents are Jno (b. SC in abt 1803) and Polly (b. TN abt 1813). The 1860 census lists a FM Wright in Macoupin Co, but is a female. I need to get back to work, but these results might help. > Dear Listers, I have F.M. Wright b. abt. 1843 in Illinois. Travelstead. I copied the above from the State Records on the Internet. Martha Would dhave been 19 when she married. 1. introduction
    2. My name is Judy Johnson I am researching the James M /CLENDENIN/ and Millie Mae /Johns/ family. They were married in Stonefort in 1903. I believe all 8 of their children were born in Energy or nearby and his death certificate (1939) lists his burial location as Carterville. Millie died the following year. Most of what I have is oral history from people who have since died. I can't find this family in the 1930 census. Any suggestions? Judy Johnson judybsa@peoplepc.com

    1. In search of John M Donnel and Elendar Childers
    2. Michael Donnel
    3. My family has been searching for the last 20-30 years for the whereabouts of John M Donnel and his third wife Elendar Childers. The owned land in the Grassy Township section 15 during the late 1860's. This land is thought to be currently owned by Lydell and Janet Bush, or a portion of it. What I am looking for is some trace of these two individuals within Williamson county. This location is the last know location of him and his wife. John M Donald, according to the 1868 Tax records book #25, shows him owning land in Section 15, T10, R1. His land holding were ptNW-NE (20 acres) and SW-NE (40 acres). I have looked for burial information and find nothing. It was suggested to look at the estate records index for Wiliamson County for his name to see if he had any heirs. I can't seem to locate this information either. A relative of mine has done extensive research on him and research has only come up with some close what ifs. Nothing that indicates a exact match for John M Donnel. We find McDonel ( a victim of a stabbing by Thomas Inscore in 1874 in Jackson County). The defendant's book from the clerks office in Murphysboro did not provide a victims name but based on the approximate date of his first trial and the defendants last name we are able to make a correlation between the Marion Monitor article from December 1874, but still no 100% hit on if this McDonel was in fact John M Donnel. What happened to the victim? What was his first name? Where do I look to uncover the rest of this case? I am looking for any assistance. I have also looked at the county Plat book and online research done and no one matches up. The plat shows Grassy Township with 15 cemeteries and everyone else is all over the map. Some show cemeteries in a particular section and others don't. Who's right and who is wrong. I see that the Federal Government owns a good portion of Grassy Township now. How can I look at records they may have as to whom they purchased the land from (or may have confiscated)? I am at dead ends it seems. Michael Donnel Shelby County, Illinois

    1. Bloody Vendetta of Southern Illinois
    2. Jon Musgrave
    3. Hello, My new book, "The Bloody Vendetta of Southern Illinois" is now finished and going to the printers Monday. It's an expanded and updated edition of Milo Erwin's writings on the Vendetta published in 1876 as part of his larger "History of Williamson County, Illinois." I've taken Erwin's chapters on criminals and the Bloody Vendetta and added additional materials on the Ku Klux Klan activities, trials that he didn't cover, and the trials and murders that took place after he wrote his book, or took place later in the 19th Century by the next generation of some of the families involved in the Vendetta. The new book is a 6 x 9 trade paperback with 240 pages that's roughly half Erwin's 1876 account and half new material, including some connections between the murders and Klan activitities never before seen in print. Although Erwin wrote about the events as part of his history on Williamson County many of the killings and trials actually took place in Jackson County and the Klan seemed to have been led out of Franklin County. The major families involved included the Sisney, Henderson and Russell families on one side and the Crain, Bulliner and Hinchcliff families on the other side. Other individuals implicated in the violence included Samuel Musick, Allen Baker, James Norris, Timothy Cagle, William Spence, Wesley Council, David Pleasant, and Gordon "Texas Jack" Clifford. Victims of the Klan included the Vancil, Carter and Maddox families in particular. The book also lists members of the Klan arrested and tried as well as others who attended some of the public meetings. It also covers how the Franklin County sheriff used "lead poisoning" as a means to rid the county of the Klan as part of a successful attempt to infiltrate the Klan and set up an ambush. Because I tried to tie up some of the loose ends and provided additional information that Erwin left there are also chapters on the Aiken Gang which terrorized the region during the Civil War and the hiliariously inept Jennings Gang of Oklahoma whose leaders grew up in Marion during the Vendetta. The book is fully indexed, and includes hundreds of names. This spate of violence mostly in the decade following the Civil War in the early to mid 1870s is best remembered as the first chapter in Paul Angle's Bloody Williamson. If you enjoy reading about the region's sordid past and the efforts by local leaders to clean up the region, you should enjoy this book. The book is priced at $14.95 and I'm doing a PRE-ORDER SPECIAL for orders made before August 18 (which is when I expect the books to be ready). Any PRE-ORDER will receive FREE SHIPPING and I'll cover the sales tax for Illinois residents. To order securely online go to www.IllinoisHistory.com/books/bloodyvendetta.html. You can also order with a check or money order made out to IllinoisHistory.com and sent through the mail to this address: IllinoisHistory.com PO Box 1142 Marion IL 62959 Sincerely, Jon Musgrave IllinoisHistory.com
