    3. CORDELL - looking for the parents of..... George Washington CORDELL b ~1824 Robertson Co, TN / d 1896 Plumfield, IL I've also seen him listed as born in NC. Civil War Veteran. purchased land in Williamson County on 1 Mar 1855. I am not sure of the location of the property but my guess is that it was near Freeman Spur which lies on the border between Franklin and Williamson Counties. He first married Almeda ALLEY in Robertson County TN. She died in IL. They had three daughters, Adaline, Amanda and Tennessee Elizabeth all born in TN. They are both buried in the Freeman Cemetery in Freeman Spur. 2nd married to Mary COX PAYNE. They had 5 children the oldest, MIssouri was born in IL in 1860. She is my great-grandmother. Although I have seen others list him as the son of Samuel CORDELL and Catherine CARNES I have had my doubts. I need some kind of documentation connecting him to parents. 1. [ILWILLIA] The murder of John Henry Chaplain (1795 -1858)
    2. Donna Mariner via
    3. Every few years I drag out the murdered remains of John Henry Chaplain (1795-1858) hoping that some of his descendants will have joined Ancestry or one of the southern Illinois Rootsweb lists, and will have noticed the mind-boggling mess that this poor man's biography has grown into. (I can hear Sheldon groaning, and maybe Jean turning over in her grave, this has been a sore spot to many of us on this list who are related.) I know that he has dozens of ggg grandchildren living in southern Illinois and Indiana, and I hope someone may have an old family bible, family lore, or other proof of what happened in 1858 on this fateful trip (see MURDER paragraph below). He supposedly (according to many, including me, but I'm still doubtful) was the father of about 22 children by three different wives. I'm descended from his 3rd wife, Elizabeth (Sutton) McCluskey (1820 - 1866), through their daughter Cynthia who married William Broyles. It does seem to be true that John left Mary and had "taken up" with Nancy McKinney Walker in Rowan Co., NC (she had married John Walker in 1826) and brought her with him to southern Illinois, where he had many friends from North Carolina and Williamson County, Tenn., and knew people in the southern Illinois area. Many of their descendants from this union live in Franklin County, as do many of the descendants of John and Elizabeth (Eliz. came back to So. Illinois). Due to his still being married to Mary, he didn't marry Nancy until 1845, but had 8 or 9 kids by her prior to that. Did Mary, too, also have a boyfriend who fathered her later children after those first two, but didn't give them his name? This is the sticky part: Due to the lawsuit brought by his first wife, Mary Hiatt Pope, (1792 - 1855) (who had finally settled in Hendricks Co., Indiana), lawsuit published in several places {Franklin Co., IL}, said lawsuit mentioned John Chaplain's leaving her with two children in 1829 - to come to Illinois with Nancy (Walker) McKinney (1807 - 1852) - when at least 5 additional children who were born to Mary prior to 1828, seem to have existed - listed in the Williamson Co., Tennessee census and going with her to Hendricks Co., Indiana - plus several of John's descendants have said in Ancestry postings that Mary Pope died in 1840. - when John Chaplain's wife Mary Pope was alive and suing in 1855 - what a puzzle!! As many of John Henry Chaplain's descendants live in the southern Illinois and Indiana area from all three of his wives, I hope someone closer to the facts can lend some knowledge. 157 years ago - almost - and I'm still searching for answers which are probably out there somewhere. MURDER IN ILLINOIS OR ARKANSAS?? He was supposedly bushwhacked February 26,1858 on his horseback journey to Illinois after visiting his family in Imboden, Lawrence Co., AR, where he and Elizabeth had settled in 1853 and had their four children. She was left with 4-yr-old twin boys, one dau. (my ggma, who was 1 1/2 yr. old, and a 3 mo. old daughter. Even though this date of his sudden murder seems to have been well known, I can find no written reports or family knowledge of this event. This man has captured my heart, rascal or not. Are there any secrets out there about him? Thanks. Donna Braden Broyles Mariner (currently living in McLeansboro, IL) (If I don't find out the answer, I'll repost this in a couple of years..haha)

    3. Hi Folks, You probably know this; in fact, this is probably like telling you those ads on TV for miracle weight loss pills are not true. Nevertheless - the request from Sandy Davidson is a scam. Someone hijacked her e-mail and sent the request to everyone in her address book, including us. I do a lot of e-mailing, and my address hasn't changed in 10 years. As a result, I'm on a lot of lists and in a lot of address books. I get a request like this every month or two. Usually the victim has had his wallet stolen in Europe and needs $1,000 - $2,000 so he and his wife can get home. The fact someone whose last name is "Davidson" would have a cousin in Greece makes me suspect the hijacker is someone with a limited knowledge of European naming conventions. If any of you know Sandy personally - well enough to know her phone number - please call her (don't e-mail) and tell her to contact her ISP to report the hijacking. The surgery is cheap here in Greece, I traveled with little money due to the short time I had to prepare for this trip and never expected things to be the way it is right now as my credit card can't work here. I need a loan of $1,500 from you to pay the balance before the commencement of the surgical operation and will reimburse you at my return.
