    3. Could it be that these forms are done according to the number of people living in an area-that is, more metropolitan areas will have more people receiving the short form? I have the 1 in 6 number as a result of a woman from the government giving an interview on a local television news station. She said this is what they used this year. We do live in a large urban location and perhaps she was relaying information based on what we should expect. I think some of the questions they asked are not nearly as relevant as others that were asked in other census years, but I'm assuming the government has reasons for this. Barbara

    3. Evening Folks, I am currently doing research on Pinkney William Mohler. Pink was born in NC in 1849, son of John Mohler ( no information). Pinkney's son James "Edd" Mohler was my great grandfather that married Barbara Hester from Johnson Co. IL. They lived on South Court St in Marion IL. Edd and Barbara Mohler's son William Everett Mohler pronounced "Evert" in Marion was my grandpa. Wm. Everett married Juanita Fox from Jackson Co. IL. they had one daughter Patricia Lee Mohler, my mother. If anyone connects with these folks and would like to communicate with me feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] . I have next to nothing on the Mohlers as I have just started my research, but I am willing to share what I have. I am also working on my Deaton family line. I have lots of Deaton information and would love to hear from any of my Deaton family. Respectfully, Lee Ann

    3. I received both the long and the short form. I was wondering what happened when the second one came in. I was wondering if the first one I filled in was a questionnaire under the pretense of a census and got scammed into giving information like do we own or rent a home, occupation of each member of the family, yearly income of each member, etc. Did anyone else receive both the long and the short form? Anne

And, I'm afraid the numbers are going to be just staggering. As a kid of 14, I was uprooted from Egypt and transplanted in Baltimore-Washington. It was suddenly very difficult to get away from crowds. That was 40 years ago. We've read that the population doubles every 30 years. Anyway, on behalf of the poor census workers, how much data can they really handle on close to 300 million people? Bruce Wms

    3. We live in a rural area in northern Michigan and every other person was given the long form. The 1 in 6 is what they used in 1990. I was a follow-up enumerator in 1990 and plan to be the same this census. Sylvia

    3. I guess the long and the short of it (I got the short) is that if we do our job right, those who come after us will know all about us first hand, and not by the government. Our kids deserve that. Thelmer

    3. Long forms and short forms? I've received only 2 mailings from the Census. Last week was un cuestionario asking if I needed the next form in a different language. This week was what the Census is advertising as standard. Like how many in the household, own or rent, black or wh.....did someone say 'racist?' Anyway, my form had only a few Qs and took one page, basically. What's on that 40-pager that someone else mentioned? Bruce Wms

    3. I agree with Marilyn and plan on just putting the number 2 in where it asks how many are in the household and telling our wonderful government that I think it's racist and asks for too much info that they have absolutely no need for other than statistics, and they can find another way to go get em. Or, I might just toss it in the trash! 3. Angela, We received the short form as well, and also were very disappointed. It's my understanding that 1 in 6 households received the longer form to fill out. That leaves 5 families in 6 that will have descendants who will be looking for information that won't be available. What a sad legacy for our government to leave!! 3. I am looking for information on the family of Henry and Texi Waters, of Marion, Illinois. I don't know their birth or death dates. His father was Spencer Jasper Waters, who was born on June 13, 1854, at Glendale, Illinois. His mother was Seaeneth Frizzell of Johnson Co., Ill. They were the parents of two daughters. One married a Spencer and had a daughter named, Linda, who graduated from Marion High School in 1963. She also worked for Western Union, across the street from Bennie's. Restaurant. The other was Pauline Spiller, who married Clyde Spiller. They had three children, Tom, Susie, and Clydia. If anyone is researching the Waters, I'd appreciate hearing from you. My grandmother ran a tourist home on Court Street, next to Fox's Flower Shop until 1952. I have many memories of Marion. Sharon Robbs Brown

    2. Wanted to share this with everyone, but please don't comment on it to the list and jam up everyones mailbox. Thanks, Sharon THE CENSUS It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready, a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water, as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions -- the best she was able. He asked of her children. Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; His sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age. The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon -- or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some, and write some, though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp -- its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. - Anonymous
