    1. Re: [ILWILLIA] Tamms State Champs
    2. Regarding Bruce Williams story about Tamms winning the Illinois state basketball championskip.. NO.. dont remember that one, BUT, I do remember, I believe 1946, In the Benton regional, Mounds and West Frankfort were playing in the Championship. West Frankfort was #1 in the state, and was seeded to with the state. Well, WF lost that game to Mounds, and all the Benton fans were cheering for Mounds. Had to call Benton and WF police to the Benton gym. Bob Carter BTHS 1946

    3. Hello. I don't normally get involved in these discussions but I thought I'd put in my two cents worth. Living in Colorado while most of my ancestors came from the east or Midwest (Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, etc.) I know how difficult it is to track down a lot of the source documents. I too spend many hours at our library and on the computer - not to mention all the wonderful people out there who have volunteered to share their data with me. I know I would not have nearly the data I do now without their help. I hope that in some ways I have been helpful to others. And yes, I have gotten conflicting data from people - but then I've gotten a lot of helpful data too! That's where documenting your sources is helpful. When I get gedcoms from other people, I never just merge the databases. Yes that would be the easy way - but then I'd never know where that data came from. I always retype the data and enter that wonderful person who gave me the data as the source for that item. If they be chance enter their sources - more the better. I still give them credit for their help on the database. If I get the same data from several people, I just list numerous sources. I think most people out there are just looking for clues to their past not to make it rich writing books. Like you can really make that much anyway. I for one will share my data with anyone willing to see it. To me that's what the genealogy is all about, sharing your treasures with others. I do use Family Tree Maker and I will not submit my family tree to them because it sort of torks me that they take data from people and then turn around and sell it to others. I'll give it to anyone that asks for it - but I won't give it to someone who'll then sell it to someone else. That's one of the things I like about Ancestry.com. They take peoples gedcoms and post them for all to see. You can pay for membership to their site but they don't charge for data that's sent to them free of charge. Oh well enough of my soapbox. Happy Hunting! Tammy Phillips

    1. [ILWILLIA] non specific requests
    2. If I get a query like: "I am related to your family send me all you have..." what I will send them is my line of information.. and that is all... with individuals that can prove kinship no problem I will include notes for the individuals that are listed in my database... I have no needs at the present time to publish a book but things might change in the coming years.. who knows with the future has in stored for us.. Thus what I am saying... people need to learn how to ask for things.... even newbies.. starting out... I am also amazed that individuals starting have little in the basic knowledge of how to reseach your family.. not taking the time to join their local genealogy societies or buying books for education are for reference ... I am on a budget and handicaped also... if I can work on overcoming my shortages why can't others also... and over the years I have also foundout that some of my information that has been sent to me is not valid.. family connection wise.. someone did some bad research and connected the early families to other families around the country... thus you have problems there... who's information do you accept... theirs or yours ??? We all start out with little information that we can share with others.. and have to build on our information.. and want more.. I spent many years looking for families that did not exist due to improper spelling of the surname across time... in county records.. like I have a Fances LIGGOR listed in Tennessee marriage records in 1817... but I could not find who this family was.. until I attained the marriage bond.. it was LIGGON... I am of the Attitude of Teach me how to fish, so I might eat, Don't give me fish, so I might eat... I will value the fish that you give me but will have more value catching the fish that I might eat... and can share with you... to say thank you... 3. I'm so happy to read all the rebuttals. I have been searching for my family roots less than a year and I have gotten so much information from all you kind people. I was beginning to feel guilty because I couldn't give back, but today I was finally able to help someone else. This was on another list. I made a trip to our local library, dug up a bunch of stuff, and sent it to another researcher. Made me feel great!! I think what goes around comes around. 3. I agreed with almost everything you all said. Genealogy, just like anything else, is mostly nice people with just a few bad apples! I say, share as much as you can, because even contacts you think will help THEM more than they help YOU may come back to you in surprising (and very helpful) ways...you never know! ANgela, who believes that someone, somewhere knows where and when her g-g-grandfather Christopher Thompson died after disappearing from all known records in 1873 but still referred to as alive (supposedly) until the 1890s...

    3. I third that Jerry! I did research through the mail and in the libraries for 27 years and now that I have my computer, I share anything I have and anyone is welcome to it. But I'm also not shy about accepting more info from others that have found info that I didn't have and I'm greatful for it. I'm not doing this to publish a book to make money. I'm doing it so my grandkids will know "Who they are". (and my own personal satisfaction that I know who I am too) The more people that help each other, the more genealogy everyone will get. > , I post mine and give of it freely.... that's why > it is there! 3. Sue, I know what you're saying and I feel the same way about researching, writing letters, making phone calls, sitting in libraries for hours and walking all day, only to feel like you're "giving" it to someone. But I can't help but ask, what are the mailing list for if not to share info, when some can't walk, spend the money, sit for hours in libraries, or make long trips across country. They want to know about their ancestors too. We recently joined some mailing lists, partly because of at least one of those reasons, and I HAVE added some queries, but not to use anyone. These people are wonderful, and wouldn't answer if they didn't want to. We've done our share of doing all the above mentioned, and have sources for our work. The detective part you mentioned, is what makes genealogy more interesting. I, for one, wouldn't enjoy it half as much if all I had to do was write it down, mainly because I wouldn't know if it were the truth or not, unless I had a good source, and these peop! le give sources. We are fairly new to the computer, (less than a year), so our info didn't come that way. Thank you for letting me "vent", and good luck with your researching. Bessie

Not even a "howdy, thank you mam." BUT for me the families that do share far outweighs the stingies. I am deeply honored to have met them. I will continue to share knowing that a small few will take my hours and hours of research posting them as their own.( without my permission) GRIN what if I'm wrong? Egg on their face not mine. 3. In looking at some of the emails that I get related to the Williamson County list, I see many that come through with little or no specific information. Are we doing our own research? Or are we depending on those who have done research to share that with us? Research takes time and yes even money. No one wants to put in all that work only to have someone else use that information in an article without their permission. I have corresponded with many people who refuse to have their research posted to a site because there are always going to be those few who think that a couple of well placed questions and someone elses hard work THEY get credit for the genealogy they have published. Well folks thats not how it works. Genealogy is about detective work, its about sharing, its about dead ends and brick walls. It is not however about using people. I think we need to all be very careful about placing well worded informative queries. Those of us who are researching are beginnin! g to see which ones are doing the foot work and which ones are sitting back waiting for that text or gedcom to come in. Let us all put forth our best EFFORT in research and friendship. thanks for letting me vent. Sue
