I don't know what book they are talking about, but I have used "The History of Will County, Illinois", published in 1878. Has town histories, basic biographies of "leading" citizens. My Curtis Harvey Gilkerson was in there because he was a merchant, his father Thomas was only listed as "farmer" (no biography). It seems like a combo yellow pages/history book. It is available at the Minn Hist Society (http://www.mnhs.org/ ) and they also do lookups http://www.mnhs.org/library/about/email.html -- they are really full service, you only pay postage and copying).
