My Michael Toomey died March 13, 1905 and is buried with Jane in Mt Olivet Cemetery. She died March 26, 1903. My Michael Toomey was born in Ireland December 1861, and his wife, Jane Donovan was born May 1868 in Wales. She came to Joliet with her older sister Esther Donovan Sullivan and her husband John. Jane married Michael in Joliet September 15, 1887. According to the 1900 census, Michael came to the US in 1881. In 1900, he was a bartender living at 458 45th Street West, Chicago, Illinois. In the Joliet directories, I find Michael living at the same addresses of his future brother-in-law, John Sullivan. I have narrowed it down to TWO sets of John Sullivans & Michael Toomeys! Both Michael Toomey & John Sullivan seem to have these same characteristics: 1887 first entry res. 1008 Collins, laborer 1888 res., 915 Columbia-laborer 1889-1890,res. 915 Columbia, teamster 1891=res. 915 Columbia, works for Lambert & Bishop Wire Fence Co. AND 1891-res. 411 Elwood, works for IL Steel Co > My hope is to find the Naturalization papers, the death cert for Michael > Toomey & his brother-in-law, John Sullivan, who died August 02, 1902. 3 of Michael's children died: Michael d September 15, 1893 Hester d May 04, 1900 age 4 2 of their children lived: John b 1890 James (not the one born July 1887.) Could I learn how to get the death records of the babies before 1916, and of the Naturalization papers?
Hi Cindi, 1.- IF that's Mt. Olivet cem.,Joliet that they are buried in: Contact Catholic Cemeteries Office(for Will County) 402 S. Independance Blvd.,Romeoville,IL (815)838-0395 They have index card file 1st by city, then cem.,then alpha by last name, etc. Ask if there are any others buried with them. Might give you some leads. 2.-Naturalizations: prior to about 1902-usually do NOT give exact location in Ire(or Wales). May give witnesses who could be relatives. Mormons have microfilmed northern district naturalizations(by time frame and alpha by name)would include 4 or 5 courts in Cook,Will County plus northern IL counties and some of Indiana. I found my grandfather by using these microfilms-naturalized in 1870's in Cook county court(one of the 4 or 5). 3.-Death certificates-prior to 1916-voluntary not required in any county of Illinois. Each county had their own death index usually starting late 1870's to 1915. Will County-checked the death index 1877-1915 for Michael & Jane TOOMEY and for the SULLIVANS,and two TOOMEY children. No entries, meaning no death certificate in Will County. You might want to contact the Will County Coroner's Office and see if they have a record. Occassionally, I have found that no deeath cert. was issued but there was a coroner's record. ONLY one I found that was close in Will County Death Index TOONEY,Tobias age 1yr6mo10days residence Joliet buried Mt. Olivet. I would check for 1880 Illinois,b.Ireland for him and for Jane DONOVAN b. Wales, etc. Mainly because naturalization process is a two step deal. First papers and final.
