Bate Thomas Tong came here as the herdsman for a shipment of Hereford cattle from England, in 1884, that was consigned to a Hereford breeder in Manteno. He was employed by WILLIAM CONSTABLE as a herdsman on his farm in Will Township. This is where he (Tong) met Lettie Brooker, also employed there and a niece of the Constables, who became his wife on June 5, 1887. They became the parents of Mrs. Lloyd Bate. The Tongs, with some financial assistance from the Constables, bought a 120 acre farm in 1901.
