    2. Karen Rowe
    3. Dear Laurie, One thing I can mention about the Greve surname. I have also seen it spelled Grabe and Graebe. In the old german script the letter "v" can look like a "b" and vice versa. 1. [ILWILL] Trinity/Black Walnut Cemetery
    2. Missy
    3. Hi List, Does anybody know if Trinity Black Walnut Cemetery was ever called Crete Cemetery? My great great grandmother's Catharina Maria Oldendorf's death certificate says that she was to be buried in Crete Cemetery. Her grandson says she is buried in Trinity/ Black Walnut Cemetery. I did a walk through of both cemeteries when I was in Illinois last month and couldn't find her. Her husband is buried at Trinity/ Black Walnut and has a tombstone that could be inscribed on all four sides. The stone was tipped over and all I could get was his dates. There was nothing inscribed on the sides. Does anybody know where I could find burial records or is the cemetery abandoned? Thank You, Missy in Michigan

    3. Thank you for asking. Love the fact that you are into history especially around the Will County area. But in Wallingford on Elevator Rd stood my 4th grandfathers farm. A log cabin he built from the black walnut trees that grew there. (This is what I was told) I knw the farm burn down about 50 yrs ago and was sold from the family in the 30's because the money had to be used to bury the eldest daughter Mary Foster Koerner. (She at St Joseph in Manhattan). Just another tidbit fro a history person. I am looking for Joseph Foster or Franz Joseph Foster or Joseph Franz Foster. He would have died about 1907ish. I found his wife at old St Rose thanks to Kathy Z. Gosh what an honor to find her grave. It is such a rush to see these people knowing their trials and tribulation to get here and therefore I am here. Her husband Joseph is my challenge. Any help is appreciated... 2. Martha, Coming from the West, take Chicago Street Exit off I-80 (This will be the first exit after you cross the Des Plaines River, in Joliet). Go south to the next stop light, Patterson Road, turn right. Follow the road -- you'll cross a set of railroad tracks and go under a RR overpass. The next street will be McKinley keep going on Patterson. The cemetery will be on your left. You'll see a church on the right side of Patterson Rd. If you pass the church, you've gone too far! I suggest that you visit during daylight hours only, as the neighborhood might feel intimidating towards sunset. Larry

    3. There are several cemeteries in Jackson Twsp, adjacent to the Wallingford/ Manhatten area. I missed the family name you are looking for. Arlene

    3. Manhatten Library does have some info on Wallingford. When you enter immediately look to your right, in the 2nd aisle there are 2 shelves of local history. Some family histories and been donated, some school projects, things you will not find elsewhere. Kevin Crawford has the records of the Wilton Center Cemetery tho is hard to contact, always working. 1-815-478-4066. My family had a very elderly friend, John Thayer? He was very old back in the '40's. I'm sure he had passed away by l950. He lived in a big house on a hill, had a chair under a tree and would walk down the hill with 2 canes and family helping him. Do you recall where the Thayer farm was? Arlene

    3. Hi Debbie, Thanks for the kudo. I've always loved history, genealogy and antiques. Love to help when I can. No I don't have a phone number for Wilton center cemetery. You could try locating the Wilton township supervisor. I don't know who that would be,but I bet the Manhattan Public Library or maybe the Manhattan Post Office would know. The Manhattan Public library has a centennial booklet which contributors added info about founding families. Might be a resource. Manhattan also has UNINDEXED microfilm of local newspaper which starts in early 1900's maybe 1920 or so. Wilmington public library has the earliest microfilmed newspaper for the area(and would cover Wallingford & Wilton). They are indexed from mid 1860's to current. Who are you looking for?Might have something. I live less than 12 miles from Wilton and Wallingford. I could take digital photos for you. The following is from the History of Will County 1878: page 633 Village of Wallingford As previously stated,NELSON,KIBBIN and WILEY had purchased of the Indians the tract known as the "reservation." Afterward that portion which now constitutes the site of the village was sold to H.B.GOODARD,by whom,in turn, it was conveyed to Charles W. KEITH,who laid out the town and offered the lots for sale. Doubtless, high anticipations were indulged in, regarding the destiny of Wallingfor,as KEITH advertised it extensively. Charts of the town were lithographed and sent to every corner of the East and West. Some of them still in existence show what a nice town may be built on paper, all with streets and alleys, public squares and fine parks. But,alas, for human expectations! the enterprise proved a failure, and Wallingford stands a monument of blasted hopes. It is now simply a little trading-point,with a score(score means about 10)of houses,a store and a few shops. KEITH,after having disposed of a few lots, sold the site and the adjoining farm to Noah THAYER,of Aurora, who still owns it. PS-I have from the 1873 Atlas of Will County- a stone lithograph of "Res. of Noah THAYER esq. Wallingford Will Co.ILLS" shows a very grand and probably exagerated view of is farm and lands. Lithos in this Atlas -were a sort of early advertising and the person who wanted to be included with a litho had to pay for it. Just like advertising in a newspaper today. This particular litho is very large 12"x7",almost a third of a page large. Most were about 3"x4". I may also have from this same atlas a plat of Wilton township but not sure about that one. I was at an auction MANY years ago on the THAYER farm. I can still remember the barn because it was built in an east coast New England style and not a midwestern one. It sat on the only hill or rise around for miles. Small creek ran nearby. Hope this helps. Kathy
