Quite a while ago, someone gave me some information that there was at one time very early in Joliet history, a STEVENS CEMETERY. The cemetery is no longer....burials evidently moved. What I would like to find out, is for WHICH Stevens family in the area was this cemetery named. I know there was a Henry K. Stevens who was very prominent, and his family is the one I am researching. His wife, Mary Ann was apparently the sister of my gg grandfather. Henry K. Stevens was from MASS. There was another Stevens in the area who was from the South I think. Can anyone answer the question as to which family this cemetery was named for...and ....if there were any records of the burials that were moved when the cemetery was closed. My great great great Grandmother, Mary Campbell Johnstone married a Henry Hamilton. They were in Joliet in the 1860 census. She died first in Morris and he died in Peoria, they are both buried in the Wesley Cemetery at Ritchie. I don't know anything about Henry's family. I know Henry was born in Scotland and I'm fairly certain he had a first wife who died. There were Hamilton's in Morris in Grundy county. Dorothy (Wood) Riegel Dorothy Riegel

Seeking info on the Chadwick family. Came to Ill. fron N.Ireland about 1870, Thomas and Savina parents to Eliza. Any info would be appreciated. Mac
Carolyn, There is a James Hamilton buried in Brown Cemetery at Jackson's Grove near Elwood: "James Hamilton 1797 - 1884, Rebecca Freburn, wife of James Hamilton 1815 - 1902" The next headstone " William Hamilton 1856 - 1917, Mary 1864 1963" And a third headstone: "Ella R. Hamilton 1862 - 1898" The 1917 Old Settlers' Association Necrology Report for 1917 gives the date of June 26, 1917 for William's death. This info is posted on the USGenWeb Project's Will County site. I hope this helps. Larry Peet
Here are the only two James Hamiltons in Will Co. (note Canadian connection in both), at least according to the LDS 1880 census index (none in Elwood at that time). If you know that they stayed in Will Co., I would look for the family on the 1900 census, which gives a lot of useful info, including how long a couple had been married, number of children borne by mother, number living, birth date (month and year), etc. Good luck! Looking for information on James Robert Hamilton from Elwood, Illinois. James Robert was a French Canadian. Not sure to whom he was married but do know he had at least one son, Alexander Hamilton, born in 1882. He also had at least one daughter who married someone with the last name of Idsen. Sadly, that is all the "clues" I have at this time. I am actually attempting to locate the birth certificate for Alexander, my grandfather, who was born in Elwood, but having just been bitten by this genealogy bug I am discovering ANY information one can find will fed the fever. If anyone knows of James Robert or his son Alexander ... would you consider contacting me, please? I thank you in advance for your time and energy. Thanks to Kathy for taking time to send lots of good information. George A. Gray was my great-great grandfather. He moved to Minnesota from Will Co. in 1877. You mentioned the Civil War service record of George's son, Alexander. I have inherited three letters Alex wrote from Virginia to his Monteith relatives. These are on the web somewhere, but I would be happy to send them to this mailing list or web site if anyone is interested. Susan
Dear Will County List, I am a new subscriber. My ancestors include the Gray, Monteith, and Williams families of Florence, Wilmington, and Wesley. (1830s - 1870s) My question: Mary Monteith married George Alexander Gray 7 June 1844, probably in Wilmington where the Monteiths lived. Would like to know the names of protestant churches in Wilmington at that time. Many thanks! Susan Gray Detweiler Charleston, SC

Hi! I received an e-mail a few weeks ago from a kind lady who sent me a copy of Patrick WALLACE's obituary at either my hotmail or yahoo e-mail address. Somehow the e-mail was deleted, and I was hoping she might be on this list. I remember her maiden name or married name was GARLICK, but that was all I remembered. If you're on this list, please e-mail me! Brenda Hébert

The 1886 Census show them living at Grafton, Belle Prairie Precinct in Fillmore County, as does the 1890-91 Nebraska Gazetteer. In 1900 the census living in the Franklin Precinct, Fillmore County, Catherine was listed with her brother William and family. In 1920 Catherine was 83 years old and living with her son William. OBITUARY OHIOWA ADVERTISER MARCH 18, 1927 Funeral services for Grandma Roetter, one of the oldest settlers of this county, were held Tuesday afternoon, March 15, with a short service at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Catherine Rippe, and at the South Lutheran church, Rev. G. Klatt, the pastor being in charge. The services as impressive and the pastor's just and sympathetic words, personal of the deceased, were as generously bestowed as they were deserved. The theme of Rev. Klatt's message was taken from Genesis 24:56, "Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered by way; send me away that I may go to my master, the hope of a Christian, and it was one of the great comforts to her loved ones. The singing of several hymns by a quartette consisting of Mrs. W.H. Bahe, Mrs. Howard Sieckmann, Mrs. Harry Sieckmann and Mrs. G. Klatt, with Mrs. Lawrence at the organ, was very impressive. The pallbearers were her six grandsons, W.H., Frank, John, Emil, Henry and Theodore Rippe. There were many beautiful floral offerings. She loved flowers and greatly appreciated things that were beautiful and good. The flowers were in charge of Lavern and Nora Schroeder. The following sketch of her life is a touching tribute to the deceased: Catherine Roetter nee Schroeder was born April 9, 1836, near Wridel, Province of Hanover, Germany. Here she received the holy rite of baptism in infancy, was confirmed, and in February, 1861, she united in marriage with Henry Roetter. Five children were born unto them, two of whom passed away in their youth, and a son, William, preceding her in death two years ago. Two children survive her, Mrs. Henry Rippe of this vicinity and Henry roetter of Farnam, NE. Her husband died about 34 years ago. In the year of 1866 she and her husband left their native land for America, settling in Beecher, IL. In 1880 they bought a farm, located one mile north of the South Lutheran church. Here she spent the remainder of her years until the death of her son William. Since then she made her home with her daughter Mrs. Catherine Rippe. She was born, baptized, reared, living and died in the Christian faith. She passed away after a few months illness at the home of her daughter March 12 at 9 o'clock p.m., death apparently being due to old age, following an attack of la grippe. Mrs. Roetter was truly a mother in the church. She was one of the good of earth. Those who knew her well felt that she was a worthy woman. Her life was long and in it she did much that was good and holy. Almost four score years on earth is seldom given humans. This measure was granted her and she wasted none of it. She was devoted to her work and what her hands marvel, and wonder how she could do so much, especially in her late years. The center of her interest was in her home. She never wearied in telling the incidents of the childhood of her children, nor the many hardships she endured. Zealous as she was in her work, devoted as she was to her family, she never faltered in serving her Master. Often when inclement weather prevailed she would take her shoes and stockings in her hand and walk to her church for worship. Counting the Sabbaths in which she was at her place of worship, she filled thirteen years to a devoted life. In addition to the great host of friends she has made, she leaves to mourn her departure her daughter Mrs. Catherine Rippe, her son Henry of Farnam, nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and many other relatives. At the time of death she was 90 years, 11 months and 3 days of age. The funeral was well attended by the members of the church she had so faithfully served, and by her many friends and neighbors. The world is better for her having lived in it these four score years of industry, devotion and Christian fortitude.
