I am looking for the address and phone for a Lutheran Church in Peotone. My great grand parents were married there in 1893 and all seven children were baptized there. The surnames are Hoff and Klenz. They moved to Carrol Co., Il in about 1913. Does anyone know of anyone in that area with those last names? Would love to hear from you. Joy

For Carolyn, Florence is a township with only one village in it-Symerton. The next townships north and east rspectively are Manhattan (Manhattan village)and Wilton.(Wilton Center) The two townships west of Florence twp are Jackson twp(Elwood Village) and next south is Wilmington twp(City of Wilmington). Between these5 townships there are only two libraries. Wilmington Public Library which has indexed their newspaper obits from mid 1860's to current and Manhattan Public Library which has local newspapers on microfilm from about 1920 but they are NOT indexed. I think the town of Florence is next to Wilmington.

I know there's one in Pike County but he doesn't seem to be there. Once more I wish to also add how much I appreciate the responses and assistance to my questions. Kathy, I kinda have a doubt in my mind about that old tombstone that was found. It was a common practice among stone cutters, to "unload" unpaid-for headstones and "mistakes" as pavers. Not that I can or cannot prove that stone, one way or 'tother. I think that the west side cemetery was just east of St. Patrick's Cemetery, just above the DesPlaines River bluff on Exchange St. (today's Jefferson St.) Is that Reed St.? Larry Peet
Hi Larry, St. Patrick's is on West Jefferson st.-west side street is Hunter which is about 6 blocks east of Reed & Jefferson. I traced that headstone from the reporter.Family was in will county in 1830's moved on to another county. I know about reuse of stone. Raised in Joliet in early 1950's remember watching a street be rebuilt using tombstone pieces. Kathy
For Carolyn, A James Hamilton married in Will County Johanne HANSEN 6 May 1888. If you haven't already, you should get a copy of this marriage license from the illinois state archives(for free). Their website is on will county genweb site under useful links>Illinois State Archives(not Illinois state IRAD)>on first openong page look up at the top for databases, goe down list to illinois state marriage index. They also have Illinois state death index 1916-1950 which lists two James Hamilton's as dying in Will county. One Ray Hamilton died in Cook county,Chicago. Elwood-is in Jackson township-No Library-never has been one there. The next closest is Wilmington Public Library which has indexed obits from mid 1860's to current. Then Joliet(no complete index to obits-address,ect on will county genweb site under resources). There is also Manhattan which is just east of Elwood however their library has local newspapers starting in late 1920's and are not indexed. HANSEN is a rather well knwon surname in Manhattan(village and township). You might check both Wilmington and Joliet for obits of your ancestors who died in Washington(if you have exact dates)also check for a birth annoucement and marriage announcement. Kathy
Morning Julie, No I do not know when the cemetery was started. My educated guess would be probably 1840-1850 maybe earlierbut not before Will became a separate county(about mid 1830's). There was also another cemetery on the west side of Joliet which no longer exists. Within the past 4 years, there was an article in the Herlad News about a woman finding a tombstone from that cemetery. As I recall, it had a burial date in 1830's.Location of that cemetery was around current West Jefferson Street and Reed St which now has a strip shopping mall. Kathy
Kathy, Thank you for the additional information on the exact location of the cemetery and time of removal of bodies from the Stevens Cemetery. I had gotten some information months ago, but this additional information may help me locate the old cemetery near an address for one of the Stevens families. If I get a real handle on that, and think I can pinpoint the family, I will inform the list. Meanwhile, I have one other question that you might be able to answer. Do you have any information which says approx when the cemetery was started? Thanks again, Julie Bissell Tupker
First things first! Thank you. I have been so surprised with the assistance and information people on this list are extending. I appreciate it and I thank each of you. I'm looking for James Robert Hamilton (?-?) His family members are listed below: wife: Johanne Hansen Hamilton 1862 - 1935. daughter: Rebecca Hamilton Ibsen 1889 - (?) son: Alexander Hamilton Aug, 14, 1891 - Nov 5, 1940. son: Raymond Hamilton 1893 - 1902, '03, or '04 James Robert's wife, daughter and oldest son are buried in Washington State. But family lore has James Robert and Raymond buried in the Will County area. I know son Alexander was born in Elwood without a doubt. (Well, at least that's what Alex had put on my father's birth certificate.) I know James Robert was French Canadian and his wife, Johanne, was from Denmark. Please contact me if any of those names ring a bell to you. I appreciate your time and energy. Carolyn
For Julie, Stevens cemetery was located on east sdie of Joliet now is a park on walnut street between Silver Cross Hospital and Cass Street. MANY burials were moved to Oakwood cemetery(Joliet)circa 1865. Do not know which Stevens family it was named for, sorry. Kathy
