Oneida There are many Will Co. History Books, do you know which one? A railroad didn't go through the town of Channahon, but the Chicago, Joliet and Peoria Railroad ran along the east side of the River. I looked in the History of Will County, 1878; the Past and Present of Will County by W.W. Stevens, c1907; and the History of Will County by August Maue, c1928. I could not find a mention of Daniel Stafford. These are the Will County History Books I have available. I know there are others available though. You might want to contact the Reference Desk at the Joliet Public Library. Good Luck! Michele Michele Roberts Houchens Three Rivers Public Library Local History Collection P.O. I could sure use your help! I am researching the Ardagh(Ardaugh) family of Channahon. My ggrandfather arrived in Channahon about 1858. I have just learned that he had a sister, Maria Hyland who also lived in that area. Any thing you can find would be greatly appreciated. I made it to the Joliet library for research a few times but usually my time in Joliet is used visiting family. thank you Marialice Ardaugh horn

An obit. in the "Central Illinois Gazette" issue of 9 Nov 1859 reads: Died: James Curtiss, former mayor of Chicago, at Joliet. Born in Weathersfield (sic) CT in 1803. Removed to Philadelphia, where he was a printer's apprentice. After a stay in Eastport, Maine, he came to Cook Co. in 1834. Alderman and mayor in 1846. Since 1855 he was extensively engaged in farming in Champaign Co. Buried in Chicago. Odd Fellow. A web site listing the Chicago mayors states Curtiss was the 9th mayor of Chicago, was b. 7 April 1803 & that he d. 2 Nov 1859. In the 1850 census, he was living in the 6th ward of Chicago with his wife, seven children, and three servants. In 1860, 1870 and 1880 his widow is found in Champaign. From at least 1856 through 1865 his dau. Mary, lived in Joliet. She had m. 1854 Alonzo L. McArthur/MacArthur, a physician. It is possible Curtiss was under the care of Dr. McArthur at his demise. I would like to find other obituaries for this man (newspapers in Joliet? Chicago?) and wonder if anyone has access to mug book style bios of him. Hi! Does anyone subscribe to Ancestry.com that could do a lookup in this directory for me? I'm waiting for my combined Santa Claus/Birthday gift from my parents to get my subscription. There are 21 MANNING hits. Thank you! Lori
What all do you know about Daniel Stafford and his family? I have Staffords from this area and in a photoalbum there is a picture of a guy who has what looks like a stationmaster outfit on and it doesn't say a name. It would be interesting if they we are related. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe & Nita Bynum" <prunepicker@arn.net> To: <ILWILL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 08, 2002 8:34 AM Subject: Re: [ILWILL] Address Change > Michele, I'm looking for someone to copy the story about Daniel Stafford in > the Will Co history book, he was the Railroad Stationmaster at Channahon and > Minooka. Hi everyone, Before I go and order these from the LDS library, I'm curious if anyone on the list might know 1) someone who has transcribed it or 2) if its in a local genealogical library that would be willing to do a lookup. 1) Will County directory for 1859-1860: containing the name, occupation and address of every resident within the town of Joliet, Lockport, Wilmington, Plainfield, Mokena, Channahon, Crete, Monee, Elwood, and other residents in the several townships of the county / John C.W. Bailey 2) Grundy, Will, La Salle, Kendall counties : 1840-1879 deaths, marriages, births as extracted from area newspapers. Includes surname index. Thanks! Lori

My ggrandfather, Ora BRADY is said to be buried in the Joliet Prison cemetery. Is there somewhere I can write to, or better yet, go online to, to verify if this is correct? He died 23 Dec 1925, Joliet Twp., Will Co., Illinois. My request for his death certificate was sent to the the State of Illinois (online) in April of this year. I would really appreciate any help. It seems that the prison website is for current inmates. Joan Brady Norstedt in CA
For Kyle, Alexander cemetery(aka Kirman cem) is in DuPage township(not county) Will County. Location is section 33,DuPage township west side of IL Rte 53,north of Romeoville road(135th street). This location places the cemetery a little bit north and west of the Lockport township. Good Morning Sue, If you got the license number and date from the state archives database, why don't you request a free copy from the archives? It takes a long time to get but it is free. CURRENT charge for a marriage, death or birth cert. from will county clerk is $13.00. Good Hunting, Kathy
I know that messages have come across about cemeteries in Lockport but until tonight I never knew I needed them. I have a great great grandmother named Sarah Sutton whos death certificate I just got. It says she died Aug 26 1938 and she was buried in Alexander Cemetery in Lockport. I have other relatives buried in Alexander Cemetery in Romeoville. Do you think these are the same or is there another in Lockport. Thanks for all of you help! ~Kyle
Dear Sue, It costs $9.00 per name. Too much for our limited budget. We're trying to find at least 15 girls to send each one an invitation to our 50th reunion in 2004. Without help, these women will be left hanging. I have been told in the past that there is an article on Daniel Stafford in the Will Co. History book. He was the railroad stationmaster in Channahon for many years. Would anyone be willing to copy it for me. Oneida,TEXAS prunepicker@arn.net
Lori, I haven't followed all the threads of this search, but, I did some searching this morning and will share with you what I found. The 1850 census of Will Co, shows the family in Channahan Twp, page 225 and 226 Michael Manning age 58 b Ire Doctor Elizabeth 50 Ire WILLIAM 24 Ire (Is this Michael Jr?..(let me know Michael Jr's approx birth year and I might be able to help further in locating him in 1870 and 1880 with my indexes)...since Michael Manning Jr's middle initial was W. ...it would make sense that they called him William. When he entered the Civil War, he would have done so under his full legal name probably, but, there may be other records...esp census records where he is listed as William. Or...the name may have just been used as long as he was in his father's household to avoid confusion. Hannah 19 Ireland Thomas 16 Ireland Leda? 12 New York Bartholomew 9 New York Since the last two children were born in NY, I checked the 1850 census index for Michael Manning entries in NY. There were far too many to list here, but if you want them, email me privately, and I will share them with you off list. If you haven't seen their 1850 household, then you might find Michael Jr. listed as William again...or...as Michael, but it would give you an idea of whether they were switching off names. The 1870 census index for Illinois showed the Michael Manning Sr. family again in Channahan, page 10 Michael Manning 70 Ire farmer $8000 $8000 Elizabeth 60 Ireland Elizabeth 23 New York (note....this is evidently the girl in 1860 they called Leda? (it was hard to read)....a clue that they did indeed use other names for family members named after the parents Bartholomew 20 New York Elizabeth Manning (age ?5) Illinois (the age was hard to read. There is definately a 5, but there are some scratches just before the 5. She's either the wife of Bartholomew and probably age 25...OR..she is just age 5 and probably the granddaughter of Michael and Elizabeth Sr. Julie
Hi Sally, Thank you so much for pulling this record for me! I do also believe that thats my best choice at this time. I found Michael Manning Jr., living close to rest of the family in Channahon in the 1865 Census but I lost him from there thinking that he had died until just recently. I found a will that lists him as still alive in 1887. He's the only one that might still have kin alive even now. Thanks again!
