According to my check system, I have not replied to your query. Sorry for the delay. Don't know if this will be helpful..... The "1878 History of Will County Illinois" has a "Real Estate Owners" list. In the section for Peotone Twp., there is a notation for....... "Pfiel, George, farmer". I have discovered typos in the past, so am assuming this is meant to be Pfeil. There is no one else listed in the index. If you find another possible spelling or surnames connected to this family group, please contact me again. Often times references are made about connected lines without giving the name, ie Mrs. John Doe was pleased for her brother to come from WI with his family and their parents to visit. The additional detail in a bio can determine where your ancestors were even if they weren't named, since Mrs. John Doe would be the only name indexed. Hi Linda, Thank You for the information. You once sent me an obituary for Dorothy Reichert. I was able to meet her 2 sisters, Erna and Marie, this past summer. All 3 of them were cousins of my grandmother. They had lots of pictures to share with me as well as lots of stories. They are both sharp as a tack. Hi List, Happy New Year. Supposedly my great-great-great Grandfather Frederick Oldendorf bought land in Monee in 1848 or 49. I noticed on the 1850 census that there was no census taken for Monee. Is there another town they may have been counted in. I'm trying to find out in the census what other children Frederick may have had. I have found him on the 1860 census, but by this time it looks like his son had taken over the farm. Thank You, Missy in Michigan

I just received a copy of an 1877 MARRIAGE LICENSE from Will Co., IL It was signed by CHRISTIAN SANS, Pastor of the German Lutheran Church. Does anyone know in which village or town his church was located.? Sue12632@aol.com
Sue, It would have been the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Joliet . He was still the pastor in 1887. Does anyone know if there are any city directories for Lockport and/or Joliet between 1880 and 1900? I am trying to trace the whereabouts of my GRAY (John B., Eliza P.) and BALL (Catherine, John, Ann, Frank) ancestors after the 1880 census. Thanks, Gordon
For Sue, Some suggestions: Since Charles married in will county in 1877, get a copy of his marriage license. Should have residence and possibly parents names. 1920 census cook county, proviso township(NOT city of Chicago),Forest Park Village ED2150 page 13A address 1032 Elgin, owns house, mortgaged GORKE Charles age 67,came USA 1871,naturalized 1876,born Hamburg,Germany, parents born Hamburg-no occupation Louise, wife, age 63,came USA 1866 naturalized 1876, born Hamburg,Germ.,parents born Hamburg OTTO,boarder,age63,widower,came USA 1876,naturalized 1883,born Hamburg, etc. Now then Otto GURKE,married Kankakee County 4-4-1878 Margaret Marco. Forest Park,Proviso twp,Cook County,is just above eastern Will county and Kankakee County. 1888 Chicago voters registration has both Charles & Otto listed.-no other info available. 1892 Chicago voters has the following 489 California Ave. Chas. Gorke, born Germany in precinct 4 1/2yrs,in county 21 years**(makes that about 1871)in state 21 yrs.,naturalized in 1876-court not known. 1880 census index,Illinois cook county, rich twp, matteson village page 442 has GIRKE, Charles. Matteson is just above Forest Park which is just above eastern Will and Kankakee counties. Illinois state death index GORKE Emil A. died 3-18-1937 Cook County,Forest Park Grace Alina died 3-31-1930 Cook,Forest Park Louise died 6-3-1948 Cook,Forest Park Charles died 4-27-1931 Cook,Chicago Checked Kankakee County death index and master cemetery index GHERKE,Adelaide book 1 page 73(death between 1877-1892)matches GEHRKE,baby died 1895 buried Mt. Your Charles may have gotten marriage license in will county but appears to have lived most of his life in parts of cook county. If I were you, I'd check the 1880 census and the 1900-1910 census. The 1900 census (has month and year of birth for example for each person in the household). Hope this helps, Good Hunting, Kathy

Kathy, Thank you for confirming most of the info I have. The daughter that died in 1900 was Genevieve, daughter of my great grandparents Edwin and Maryette Southern. I also have death certif. for Septimus Sr. died May 1914 and also for his wife Martha both were buried in Youngstown, OH. I to found the 1920 census for Elmer, Helen, Septimus Jr. and Cecila. The question about the second marriage to Lucy (Day) Patrick I really think would have been in ILL. Her first marriage was in Will Co. and the family farm was were she was on the 1900 & 1920 census. I will try to find Obit. for Septimus Jr. If you come across anything else on the family I would appreciate it. Thank you Marcie PA/MD
IF you have his date of death, have you tried for an obit? IF you do not have date of death, have you tried to locate a probate record for him in county where you think he may have died. In Illinois would be at county courthouse, clerk of the circuit court's office. I found the following(will county VOLUNTARY death index 1877-1915) Septimus SOUTHERN Sr. age 76yrs died 24 May 1914 res. Joliet BURIAL YOUNGSTOWN OHIO. 1889-1890 Youngstown OHIO Directory SOUTHERN Miss Mary s.s.Gladstone,Haselton(south side Gladstone, near? Haseltone or?) SEPTIMUS,works for The Andrews Bros. Co. same residence as Miss Mary. also William HARE at same address. also found this death cert index will county 1877-1915)VOLUNTARY not required by IL until 1916. daughter of M/M E.J. SOUTHERN age 1mo7days died 8 Mar 1900 Joliet buried Oakwood(probably the one in Joliet) the 1920 census entry for Septimus JOLIET,3rd district 400 Hickory Street shows Elmer's father as being born OH Septimus says he was born OH also. his daughter Cecile age 17(born about 1903)says OH birth place also. Youngstown OH,New Castle,PA and Joliet have the Steel industry in common. Lots of traffic by railroad between these locations very early on. Might want to check Youngstown,Mahoring County,OH 1900 census. 2nd marriage maybe in OH? IF 2nd marriage is in will county-a search would cost $13.00-at clerk's office on north chicago street, joliet. Might want to check for an obit for Septimus Sr. Youngstown and Joliet(at Joliet Public Library-reference dept-contact Roger-cost abt. $5.00) Kathy
Hi list, I have been researching my SOUTHERN family and have hit a wall in ILL. My gggrandfather was Septimus SOUTHERN born in Eng. and came to the US in 1872 with his wife Martha and children Edwin & William both born in Eng. In 1880 census they were in New Castle, Pa. Their children were Edwin 14, William 9, Mary J. 6 b.OH.; Septimus Jr. b. PA. age 4 and Carra B. b. PA age 1. I am trying to find more info on Septimus Jr. b. abt 1876 d. UNK. m. (1) Mary Hannah Wilkinson May 6, 1899 Will Co. ILL. b. UNK. d. Sept. 20.1918 They had 2 children Elmer b. abt 1900 and Cecila b. abt. 1903 both in ILL. In the 1920 census ILL. Septimus Jr. was widowed and living with his son. I know his second wife was Lucy Day of ILL. I found she was married first to John Patrick Sept. 11, 1891 and had a daugher Nellie b Jan. 1892. In the 1900 census ILL she is listed living with her mother and family and was widowed. In 1920 census ILL she is listed still living on family farm in ILL. Wheatland twp. with her sister. My problem is I know Septimus and Lucy were married after 1920 but can find no info on it. Any help would be appreciated. Marcie in PA/MD.
