As an addendum Shiela, as I was interested in this also: From familysearch.org: The state archives is missing 1855 census schedules for several counties including: Carroll, Champaign, Franklin, Gallatin, Henry, Jefferson, Jo Davies, Lake, Stark, Will and Woodford. Hello Gordon: The 1855 census for Illinois is available on microfilm at your local LDS Family History Center (to be requested from Salt Lake City). There are a number of counties missing. Hope this helps. Does anyone know whether there was an 1855 IL census for Will Co., and if so, is it available within Will Co. somewhere, or just at Springfield? Thanks, Gordon
To everyone who responded to my question about the death date of STEVENS...thank you. I was able to find it on the Illinois death index and thanks to another researcher for getting a copy of that for me as well. I'm still looking for the middle initial of Albert P. Stevens and Jerome P. Stevens, so I'll keep on plugging away. 1. Can anyone tell me if the Joliet/Will Co Country Club, which was in existance in the 1920s kept a membership list from those early years? 2. Does anyone know if the hospital or Oakwood Cemtery kept a list of their board members? And.. 3. I understand that there is somebody at the library, a gentleman, who might do obit lookups for a small fee. Is he still around...or does anyone know his name and how to contact him? Thank you. Julie Bissell Tupker
I have ordered old Joliet papers on microfilm a number of times through interlibrary loan--usually from the Illinois State Historical Library (which, incidentally, I think will also do obituary searches for a fee--see the third website below). Unfortunately the State Hist. Library has suspended their service temporarily while they move to a new location, but I should think they'd be back in business by spring.... The US Newspaper Project has undertaken to catalog all the old newspapers still available in the US--you can see what's being done in ALL states at this site: http://www.neh.fed.us/projects/usnp.html To look up Illinois papers, try: http://www.library.uiuc.edu/techserv/inp/mergeddatabase/search_form.asp and more generally http://www.library.uiuc.edu/techserv/inp/webpages/main.htm Once you know what's available, you can fill out an interlibrary loan request for microfilm at your local library (it's for inlibrary use only, so your library must have a microfilm reader). Ask your librarian, because sometimes if one source doesn't work out, they can obtain it from another institution. In most cases all you pay is the postage. Reading these old papers is also a great way to get the flavor of the times! Hi Sharon, Ottawa newspapers are not at the Joliet Library. Ottawa is in LaSalle county. This newspaper would probably be at the Ottawa Public Library. Joliet Signal newspaper microfilm copies are at the Joliet Library. There is a reference librarian there named Roger who can do the lookups for a small fee if no one on the list is able to do it. There should be a listing of all available illinois newspapers on either the illinois archives net pages or illinois genealogy society net pages. They should be available on microfilm from them. May be available through interlibrary loan. Hope this helps. Kathy >Hi list, > >I wonder if anyone on the list makes frequent or occasional trips to the Joliet Public Library. Hi list, I wonder if anyone on the list makes frequent or occasional trips to the Joliet Public Library. I would appreciate it if someone could check a couple of newspaper items for me now that I have the dates and publications. I hope I am correct in assuming that the library has archived (film) copies of the Ottawa Weekly Republican (1844) and Joliet Signal (1858). If you would contact me off list I will supply the details. Thank you and happy hunting, Sharon in Surprise, AZ

Thank You Kathy Zavada and Tricia for answering my post regarding Wilhelm Baur. Missy
Hi List, My g-g- aunt's first husband, Wilhelm Baur died on Sept. 1, 1910 supposedly in Monee. Is there a death index for Will Co. before 1916 or should I send off a request to the Will Co. Clerk's office (along with the money) and hope they have one? Thanks, Missy in Michigan
Cook County Researchers, I have a bit of a challenge that I hope you can help me with... I am having NO LUCK finding Sarah E. Spann. All I know is that she was born in Illinois (Chicago?) in February of 1858. She was -supposively- a schoolteacher for the school (Institution) for the deaf & dumb. Sarah married Frederick Stryker (b. 1862) in 1888 in Chicago. I would appreciate ANY help at all into this matter- Thank you, Bobbi
I don't know the ward #, but I believe Jerome Ave. is one block long just west of Henderson Ave. My mother's family lived on Norton Ave., another short street just south of Jerome, and the EJ&E tracks were between the two short streets.
Good Morning E., Jerome St. is only a few blocks long and is on the East side of Joliet- between the main streets of N-Cass St.,S-Washington St.,W-Hickory/Spring Creek and E-Rowell ave. In 1910 census it MAY be in the city of Joliet in the 7th ward(on ancestry possibly District 182) OR it could still be in the township of Joliet-and those are by section number- I am very familiar with that area, quite a few of the residences in that section were rooming/boarding houses through the 1920's+. If you give me the names you are looking for, I can search for them for you. Hi, Does anybody know what ward Jerome Ave., Joliet, would have been in in the 1910 census? Thanks, E. Wark, NJ
These records are held at the County Clerk's office. I called and gave them the information from the Soundex list that you referred to, and they sent them to me. I'm sure most of the Green Garden cemeteries were included. Their website is http://www.rootsweb.com/~ssghs email is ssghs@usa.net Linda
Some of the records can be obtained for free. Not sure about Will County's holdings.... Most seem to be at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. Check the Illinois Secretary of State - IRAD holdings to see. If the IRAD has the record, you just need to contact the appropriate holder by mail (some by phone) and they will send it out. You do need to have as much information as possible. There might be a nominal charge for a search. www.library.sos.state.il.us/home.html > During Christmas break I was in Springfield where I accessed the Soundex to > Naturalization Petitions in Illinois. Kathy, Thank you for writing me about my ancestor, Madeleine F. Peters Brown. I don't live in Illinois, so I won't be able to go over and check any of these cemeteries you mentioned. I think the libraries are a good idea! I appreciate it. Lisa zavada@uti.com wrote:Good Morning Lisa, The only information I have would be a listing of most of the cemeteries in Green Garden.
