    3. Dear Lynne, Thanks very much! I did not have Jessie's exact birthdate OR death date, so this is very helpful! I would indeed be interested in Ross's birth and death dates, if you have them. I do have Jessie and Ross's marriage date, and have searching the 1900 (and 1910) censuses on my to-do list. I've found them on the 1920 census (since that is indexed)--by then they were in Long Beach. If I find any descendants, I will be happy to pass them on! Also happy to share what I have on the Pickel and Munch families (with you or anyone else who may be interested). Thanks again, Martha Grenzeback graymatters@alltel.net At 02:43 PM 16-02-2003 -0700, raybaillargeon5792@msn.com wrote: >Yes, Ross was a younger brother of Ernest and son of Henry Allison Shiffer >and Prudence M. 2. Yes, Ross was a younger brother of Ernest and son of Henry Allison Shiffer and Prudence M. Pinneo. I am trying to find descendants of this family for someone has found a picture of Prudence and would like to restore it to family members. I am a researcher of the SHIFFER line, although I descend from a different branch. Henry was the son of James Elliott Shiffer (sometimes spelled SHEFFER). James was an older brother of my ancestor, William Shiffer. I am afraid the only information I have on Jessie Pickel is this: Jessie M. Shiffer (father's surname Picker, mother's maiden name Munch) born March 3, 1872 in IL, died June 2, 1952 in Los Angeles Co., CA (probably in Long Beach). They were married in Will Co. I have much more SHIFFER information if you are interested, but nothing on the Pickel line. 2. Hi Candi Too much is better than not enough I guess I figured. I was hoping there would be something new that would put you in the right direction. Sorry for that. The 2 biggest cemeteries for Irish at the time were Mt. Olivet at 2755 W. 111th St., Chicago, IL (773) 238-4435 and Calvary Catholic, 301 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, IL 60202, (847) 864 - 3050. I think that some people were even moved from Calvary to Mt. Olivet but could be wrong You could write them and show the last known address - both were very nice about responding to inquiries we made. They might be able to tell you the church as well. Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 6001 111th St., Worth, Illinois 60482 (708) 422-3020 was the other big one used. I haven't contacted them but think a response would be answered. The Chicago Historical Society and the Newberry Library both have collections of Chicago City Directories. They also have copies of the newspapers going back past 1900. They will do Look ups but I don't know if they charge or how much. Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton St. Chicago, IL 60610-7324 312–943–9090 for automated answering www.newberry.org/nl/genealogy/L3gservices.html Chicago Historical Society Clark Street at North Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60614-6071 Phone 312.642.4600   Fax 312.266.2077 www.chicagohs.org/ The only problem with requesting records from the churches here is that many have been closed so then you have to go to the archdiocese of chicago which sounded like it would take awhile and if I remember, they charged a lot for lookups. The Historical Society or Newberry might also be able to give you the parishes. I think I remember there being a listing for licenses for liquor on the Secretary of State site - not sure -www.library.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/irad/iradholdings.html If you are not in a hurry and you give me the dates - the next time I go to look up people at the local college's collection of the Chicago Tribune I will check for obits, but the early ones don't usually have much info. Hope this is more helpful. A. Nelson Cal City, IL > Wow--THAT was a mindboggling display of options! > > Fortunately, my family came late & died early. 2. Wow--THAT was a mindboggling display of options! Fortunately, my family came late & died early. Here is info I have learned about them (from Cemetery Mt Olivet.) John Sullivan was b Ireland, came to IL in 1885. The only place I found him was 532 West 42nd St town of Lake, City of Chicago. But his daughter Genevieve was born in Joliet in March 1895. This John died in August 1902. His son John died 1953 without issue. Michael Toomey was born Ireland Dec 1861 and came to IL 1881 at age 20. He married my Jane Donovan in Joliet on September 18, 1887. I believe he worked as saloon keeper with Denis Toomey and maybe it was Toomey & Potts Saloon. Jane Toomey died March 1903. Michael died March 1905. 3 of 5 kids died young. I have found all the burial permits for their address: 458 45th Street West, Chicago, Illinois. I have found their son John Toomey b 1890 with 6 daughters by 1930! I have lost their son James by 1910 at age 21. John Toomey lived at 2036 Hastings Street, Chicago, IL in 1920. I am hoping to find their church for some baptismal for marriage records, but searching for dead James Toomeys has been a chore! Any ideas? I am coming up for air!

    3. In Re: CHRISTENSEN, (Peter & (1) Nancy{nee HEMPHILL} & (2) Sara {nee HIBNER}and their daughter Ruth; Christian & Elizabeth {nee LEA}& Oscar & Matie (nee ?); Peter Wilbert & Nina B. (nee CASSWELL) and their children, Irwin W and Blanch E; Mary, and Rose) CHRISTENSEN, PETER & CHRISTIAN were two Danish immigrants who came to ILLINOIS in the late 1860's and settled near Elwood, in JACKSON township, WILL COUNTY as farmers. Peter was the older brother, having been born in June, 1846. Christian was born in December, 1848. Peter died in September, 1910 and Christian died in June, 1921. They were both naturalized in Illinois in 1876. They were the sons of JESS CHRISTENSEN, who immigrated to Illinois in 1885 and lived in turns with his two sons until his death in August, 1900. Peter first married Nancy HEMPHILL; then as a widower, he later married Sara HIBNER. So far I have not learned that Peter was ever a father. In the 1910 census for WILL county he and Sara are shown to have a 9 year old adopted daughter, named Ruth Hazel. In the 1920 census Ruth Hazel and Sara are shown to be living with Sara's older brother and Ruth Hazel is shown to be the step-niece of the older brother. In 1979 Ruth Hazel HIBNER is buried in the Hibner burial plot in the Troutman Grove cemetery in WILL county. Peter and Sara are also buried in that cemetery, but in a different plot from Ruth Hazel. Christian married Elizabeth LEA and they had four children: two sons named Oscar (dob 8/1884; dod ?) and Peter Wilbert (dob 8/1886; dod ?) and two daughters named Mary (dob 1/1889; dod ?) and Rose (dob 10/1891; dod ?). In 1910 the two sons Oscar (& his wife Matie) and Wilbert (and his wife Nina) are shown by the census to be living in JOLIET Township in WILL county. The two daughters are not yet married and are shown by the 1910 census to still be living in the parental home in JACKSON township in WILL county, and Rose is shown to be a country school teacher. I was not able to find any of the four children in the 1920 census, although both parents are still living in JACKSON township. In 1917 Wilbert registered for the draft in World War I as a resident of WILL county, and claimed to have a wife and one child under 12 dependent solely on him for support. At the time of registration he gave his address to be JACKSON township again. I did not find a WWI draft registration for his older brother Oscar. The Farmer's Directory for WILL and southern Cook COUNTY of 1918 shows the following: 1. As to Christian and Elizabeth, they are shown to be living on a 112.5 acre farm in Section 5 of JACKSON township, and to have only three children, named Wilbert, Rose, and Mary. 2. As to Wilbert, he is shown to be living on a 112.5 acre farm in Section 5 of JACKSON township with his wife Nina B. (formerly CASSWELL) and their two children Irwin W. and Blanch E. 3. As to Sara (Peter's widow) she is shown to be living with one child, Ruth Hazel, on a 160 acre farm called "Lone Elm Farm" in section 6 of JACKSON township. I have no further data going to any of the people in the above 'clan' except for burial information for father Jess, Peter & his 2nd wife Sara, their 'daughter' Ruth Hazel, and Christian & his wife Elizabeth, all of whom lie buried in Troutman Grove cemetery in JACKSON township, WILL county. Can anyone tell me what happened to Oscar & Matie; or to Wilbert & Nina and their children, Irwin and Blanch; or to Mary or to Rose (Christian's and Elizabeth's four children, their two daughters-in-law, and their two known grandchildren)?
